free avast won't scan some files what do I do?
« on: February 07, 2013, 10:54:12 PM »
I ran a full scan and I got this error

error-archive is passward protected. It gives me some options on what to do
move to chest, repair, delete or do nothing.I don't have a passward.

There are about 50 or more files that won't scan.

Thanks!

Because there are none, trying to apply an option to a password protected file or other file that can't be scanned won't be applied..

Files that can't be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.

Many programs (usually security based ones) password protect their files for legitimate reasons, there are others (and avast doesn't know the password or have any way of using it even if it did know it).

When you run scans with the above programs and you delete harmful entries that they detect, a copy is kept (in quarantine/restore/backup) in case you need to reverse what you did. These are usually password protected, you should do some housekeeping and delete old backup/recovery/quarantine entries (older than two weeks or so), this will reduce the numbers of files that can't be scanned.

By examining 1) the reason given by avast! for not being able to scan the files, 2) the location of the files, you can get an idea of what program they relate to. You may need to expand the column headings to see all the text.

If you can give some examples of those file names, the locations and reason given why it can't be scanned might help us further ?

Thanks  Here are a few
c:\users\...buttonrighthighlight.png

c:\users\...buttonright.png

c:\users\...\bglistbullet.png

c:\users\...bgheadererror.gif

alot start with
c:\users\  & my initials too

I just found it odd that it never showed not scannable before. Do I leave them alone or delete them and if so how do I delete them all at once??

Thanks

The important bit \....\ the full path is concatenated, you can expand the column width to see all of that by placing the cursor in the column heading (right edge separator) and drag it to the right.

However, I suspect this is an adobe flash update as that password protect the update.

These should be cleared after the update I believe, so I would reboot if you haven't done so after the adobe update.

You're welcome.

Check out the full path and if it is in a temp folder then you could clear temp folders using something like ccleaner (cr4p cleaner.
