Hi guys,
we have just released a new program update to avast 5 (version number 5.0.418). You can go to this update from previous v5 builds by invoking the program update feature from within the avast GUI. Alternatively, you can download a full installer from our website (http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download#tab4) -- please note that the partner sites, such as download.com, may take a day or two to get updated.
Change log (incomplete list):
- stability improvements in the Behavior Shield
- improved compatibility with MBAM Pro (Windows XP)
- improvements in the rootkit scanner
- solved a vulnerability in AavmKer4.sys (Windows 2000/XP only) - special thanks to Tobias Klein
- ProAV + IS: solved a problem with Acrobat hanging when opening pdf files directly from IE
- firewall: low-level packet rules are back in the Expert settings
- improvements in the licensing engine
- new languages: Traditional Chinese, Swedish, Korean, Bulgarian, Hungarian. This makes the current number of supported languages 16
All users of the previous v5 builds are recommended to upgrade.
Thanks
Vlk

My first post on the Avast forum :). Have been using Avast for years now, and very happy with it. Would like to thanks the Avast team. The new Avast 5 looks good, and working really well. Congratulations for that :).
I upgraded to version 5.0.418 via the program update, and all went well.
I just faced a problem though. After the completion of update, and restart of computer... when I right-clicked on Avast tray icon, and clicked "About Avast", the program crashed, and exited. I had to restart Avast then.
This had happened the last time too, when I had upgraded to version 5.0.396 via program update. Although, after this problem, I did not had any other problem. But, I am curious as to why this happens. It may be a bug or something?
I would also like to say that with version 5.0.377, I had faced some minor problems.
I use FreeCommander, and sometimes when I used to open any folder with it, or tried to access a file, or open a file... the computer would lag for quite a while, before I was able to open the folder/file.
Also, I experienced a considerable lag while using webcam with Yahoo, and Meebo.... on Meebo the problem was more.
These problems went away after upgrading to 5.0.396 though. The webcam lag still remains a bit, but not as much as before.
I have one more suggestion, or rather complaint... can the Avast setup be hosted on another site other than Download.com? They are very slow to upload the new versions... 4-5 days. That's not good at all. There are other sites, which update to the new version very fast. Can Avast host the setup on their own servers, like before?
-
Update from .396 to .418 and all went perfect on Vista.
Are many of you that are having good results using XP? I'm gonna put avast! on my mom's computer and she has XP, so I've been waiting for a stable version before attempting it. :)
-
agreed im not a fan of download.com, even cnet is better imo or filehippo, or majorgeeks etc
-
Went great (quick too, for dial-up)... Thanks. :)
-
Thanks!! too many positive comments.. so switching again to avast!! :D
bye avira again :D!! Thanks for the hardwork Vlk and avast team.. hope that MBAM Pro will surely be stable now w/ avast :D
-
Update went fine here aswell the plus goes for Swedish translation thanks for add it.
-

Avast 5 has been very stable on my PC. I am running XP SP2. Had no major problems. Some minor problems were there, as posted in my earlier post, but they have been solved with the newer versions. I would say, go for it ;D.
The only issue I would have installing Avast 5 on systems of people with less computer experience, is that, because of the behavior shield, or heuristics, some false positives might be there, which might not be handled correctly... so you should install and scan the full system yourself.
agreed im not a fan of download.com, even cnet is better imo or filehippo, or majorgeeks etc
Yep, FileHippo, or MajorGeeks are much faster to show the updates. I have found kaldata.net to be very fast with the updates. Download.com is painfully slow. I could download the setup from the other download sites too, but I prefer downloading setups from the home site of a software. That's why it would be good, if Avast was hosted on a site where updates were faster to show. Last time, I had to download update from kaldata.... because even after a week, Download.com had not updated the version. And it is not just with Avast... its the case with other softwares too.
-
Again not any problem all these times!
-
Ok, it might be better but how do you get it...... other than updating....
I might dump this product soon, I am only able to get any access when avast is disabled, so I want to uninstall and then reinstall to the latest version, but I cannot.
-
Recently got updated to .396 to version 5.0.418. The update error in mbam (free version) is still there, sorry forgot the error code, but if the update button is clicked again, it updates as usual..no big deal.
Even if avast is 2nd only in avg in the most popular free antivirus and Avira, the number #1 in detection, I'll be hanging on with Avast =). Why? because it has great support, consistent updates, a supportive forum, performs well in detection and removal against zero-day threats, and had been doing well in antivirus testing.
And Avast has certainly improved its user-interface that choosing from among other free antiviruses even among the best ones out there, i'd go for Avast anytime. I think it has one of the best user-interface out there if not the best. Quality, Beauty, and its free. (If the 'sandboxing' feature and behavioral scanning (as with TF) reach its top level, i can go with the Pro version anytime. That would certainly be a tough nut to crack for all malwares out there)
And i believe the way Avast has improved its product lately, Avast will become #1 in less than a year. For me, it's already #1.
And can you include some user guidelines regarding setting up the real-time shields in a laymen's term. I mean like in the network shield, if i connect to internet using a laptop via a wireless router, can i turn it off?, and whether the resource its using would also lessen?
Keep up the good work and thanks a lot :)
-
Successfully updated to version 5.0.418 :D
-
Some of the users here in Taiwan still got the problem of "real-time shields turned off with no reason".
Any possible suggestions?
-
Try a repair in control panel and restart
or you should do a clean uninstall and reinstall avast for it to work properly.

According to their statements, they didn't have the old avast! installed on their machines, so they think they do not need to do the unistall and reinstall things :-\.
Glad that I don't have any problem with my three PCs at home though.
-
In the italian Translation of Avast 5.0.418 there is an error:
in the computer scan tab is written "fewer details" instead of "meno dettagli".
Thanks in advance.
-
Waited for the update notification, updated from 396 to 418 with no issues (but I have never had any issues...)
I'm pretty sure that my pc booted up faster too, and seems faster too :)
-Scott-
EDIT: I have to say also, that I am pleased that ALWIL and MBAM have worked together to solve this one for others, rather than, like the others, say add it to exclusions or something...
-
Struggling. Had 5.0.3something which was fine.
Upgraded via program update to 5.0.418 and it now sits in the tray with a red circle and white cross.
In "Summary" it says
"Urgent: avast! service stopped"
The avast! antivirus program has been stopped, or is an inconsistent state. Please re-start the program to resume protecting your system.
The Shields all have "PROTECTION STATUS: UNKNOWN"
In the Update tab it says "Current Version: Unknown" for both the engine and Program.
On Windows XP SP3. Just doesn't work. Tried downloading the latest installer, uninstalled, reinstalled, retarted the computer (several times).
I haven't changed any services. It's happened with the update. It's not even unstable (e.g. dropping in and out). It simply doesn't work.
Any ideas?
I don't have the installer for 5.0.3xx, so until a stable version comes round I'll have to manage without AV or jump ship to AVG, which I'd rather not do as I've used Avast! for a long time and am loyal to what is usually an excellent bit of software,

No problems with Avast5 here. My signature gives the OS and versions of various software I have installed.

Thanks

Well uninstalled Free version .418 and installed Pro 4.18 Unfortunatly slow boot-up still exists with Pro >:(.. Any ideas why this is? Whats so different with Pro verses free that would cause this? Its like for 2 or 3 minutes the desktop just sits there and no other applications start. No hard drive activity or anything, just stalls. Otherwise ones its up seems to run fine.
-
Update went fine here aswell the plus goes for Swedish translation thanks for add it.
Yes, nice with the swedish language, but to many "writing words separately" as I think the guy that translated the software, did it word by word from english to swedish, and with english you often seperate words, and in swedish, we wrote words togheter. Fullscreen application is not Fullskärms applikation in swedish, instead it should be Fullskärmsapplikation. Virus defintions should be Virusdefinitioner in swedish...and so on!
But credit to the guy that translated the software. It is much work to translate software.
If I got time, I will post more corrections to Igor.

Yes, please do.
Thanks.
-
The update from 5.0.415 to 5.0.418 ran without any problems. New version runs very stable (like the last ones too). :)
-
Just the usual probs with the new version.
Setup screen logic is wrong at the 'Destination' screen. If you choose Next, then Back, then try to continue through the setup, you can't (you're stuck on the 'Destination' screen).
Also a strange one--since version 5 all the PCs I've installed it to make a (reasonably quiet) 'ascending in pitch' squeak when loading and updating--as if the memory is being hammered or something. Not sure if this is a problem, but I've not known any other apps do this (apart from old graphics-intensive DOS applications).
Still think this is the best free antivirus solution though!
-
Upgrade sussesfully, no problems in XP SP3 and Win7 Ultimate x86 ;)
-
I'm on Win7 x64, 5.0.418 free
- self defense switch in settings doesn't work, it's always in self-defense on, or, put differently, the setting doesn't stick. Go settings, disable it, OK, go back, it's enabled again
- Uninstall not possible: There was an error during product uninstallation. This happens either with uninstall or uninstall invoked from, say, a new full installerof diff. version installer
- aswClear5 says self defense is enabled, so can't uninstall. But from above, self-defense cannot be disabled
- Uninstall seems only possible in safe-mode, that works
-
I updated my desktop this morning, from v4. It had to reboot upon the update completing... and it did NOT reboot...
I was afraid the machine had died... I let it sit and "think about" what it had done... but I had the black screen of death.
I finally powered it off and let it sit for a while, and then powered it on. I let it go into safe mode, then rebooted again.
All is fine now, except that the machine seems to be running a LOT slower...
My O/S is XP Pro... in case this tells you anything.
I opted for the free version, but am thinking of buying the Pro version that covers 3 machines... but wish I could get "the deal" for 4 machines, as I have 2 desktops and 2 laptops. One desktop and one laptop are both W7; the other desktop and laptop are XP Pro.
Is it possible to get "the deal" for all 4 machines? Is this 50% off good for just one year?
-
Updated fine for me too.
This was the the first time (that I can remember) that I got that "program update available" popup in 5 (I've got program updates set to notify-only, same as probably most users) ... I don't think the previous "public" build gave me the popup, but there was a note on the status screen that the update was available.
I seem to recall that engine/defs auto-updates worked fine all long (except for some users in 377), but that there were still problems with program updates up until now, and it's nice to see that the latter seem to have now been fixed. (I've got both connection-type options unchecked, by the way.)
-
I have been very pleased with this new product. Easy to use interface and lots of nice features. A lot of thought and planning went into it. Sorry that some have had trouble with it, undoubtedly caused by their particular configurations and conflicts with other software.
-
No issues here seems to be working flawlessly. I liken it to a well tuned Formula 1 Racing engine.....ZOOM....ZOOM,

I wish avast would move these downloads to their own web site. We are all taught, whenever possible to get our security programs from the vendor's site. Right now, for example, Avira Press Center has posted a Security News article (http://www.avira.com/en/press_center/news.php?id_new=451) about fake anti-virus solutions (rogues) that imitate Avira. In this news release, what does Avira recommend users do?
Users should always get software directly from the manufacturers’ download sites.
I know I am not the only avast user who wishes that we could get our downloads directly from avast.
-

Select the Multi-language version, and you can download it directly from avast!.

Updated two XP/SP2 machines with no problems. On one machine, a Dell laptop, there was no notification of a program update being available. I got the news via the forum. Granted, I don't turn on this machine daily, but shouldn't it still notify of a recent update? I clicked program update and everything went well.
The other XP is my wife's machine and it showed the notification and also updated without problem. I have one other machine, for which I have some months left on a paid version. Watching these first two computers gives me renewed confidence to install the latest Avast once the license runs out.
One comment about both machines - neither showed pending updates for 415.
Keep up the good work!! :D

@ Dcn.Dad
I see you are still running Windows Service Pack 2 so you should install Windows Service Pack 3 that has been available for over a year and a half that contains several Critical Security updates plus performance improvements.
You need to start Internet Explorer then go to Tools then Windows Update and download all of the available updates.
Go to Control Panel then Automatic Updates then select Automatic (recommended) or at least Notify me but don't automatically download or install them.
Go to Secunia Online Software Inspector then run it to see what other applications are vulnerable:

Updated 3 PC's via GUI "Update notification"
Windows XP SP3 Fully updated.......
FLAWLESS Update.
Thanks to all concerned ;D
It's all good. 8)

Well, again, with this build i can't upgrade my 4.8 to 5, it stays where the others stays. It can't transfer the license of my 4.8. But this time it can start and no freezes, this is in win xp sp3, but in 7 i just have tried clean install of version 5 free, and it's better than previous builds. I will stay with 5 free for one month, at least, when another 2 builds come out, and i can test again the upgrade from 4.8 to 5.
This is a great build!
-
Updated without any problems
-
Still no random freezes with 5.0.418!
Looks like the Alwil lads have sorted it!
Well done!
-
Hi all.
Since installation I have a permanent security centre alert (Windows XP SP 2) - avast! antivirus reports that it might be out of date. There appears to be nothing wrong with AVAST so any way to get rid of this (without checking the other antivirus program installed button). Any help appreciated.

Sorry... system crashed on reboot and keeps getting BSOD after start. WinXP SP2 (SP3 killed machine - ACER Travelmate... so wont go there again) Had to delete install and now no security program running ... please help... long time avast user.
-
Same problem with Avast 5 and TravelMate (4502). But I payed for that sw 2 days ago :( Lighting up cigar with them would be better investment.
-
Thanks for the welcome YoKenny. SP3 not for me after previous problems. Would just like to find a solution to the current -albeit a minor problem. Did not exist before latest AVAST upgrade.

I heard that a security fix (MS10-015) released by MS on Feb. 9 causes BSOD on WinXP. Isn't there something to do with this?
-
"I see you are still running Windows Service Pack 2 so you should install Windows Service Pack 3 that has been available for over a year and a half"
Thanks, YoKenny - I have lost track of how many times I have tried to install SP3 on the laptop. As usual MS's error messages are 100% correct and completely useless. Going to their site has not helped much either. If there is some site that offers understandable and useful help, I would appreciate it. I have installed on three other PCs without a problem - only this one is bugging me. I also recently tried hoping some change had been made permitting a successful installation - no luck.
-
After the 5.0.418 update I now have the avast! Context Menu Virtualize/Sandbox options back.

Grecale,
why don't you tell the people on the forum what your problems are, how you installed Avast! 5, and a bit about your OS and other security software, and maybe someone can help you with your problems. Since you show you have never posted before, looks like you never asked for help either. As far as F--- yous, threats, and requests for money back, you will need to get in contact with Avast! during normal business hours to sort that out. Most of the people on the forum are just other users who have broken enough stuff to have an idea of how to fix things. Some of them even speak Italian if you get desperate.

Did you crash when trying to install AIS, or after it was installed and you tried to run it? Where exactly in the process did you get a black screen, and were there any messages on it? Or around it? What is the current status of your computers-are you back running avast! 4? What were/are you using as a firewall, since that can be a major source of contention with something like AIS, which contains its own firewall.
-
Remember .177... almost fried my computer (it freezed it, couldn't even open a single app, and when I tried to send it to hibernation it freezed too)
Now everything runs smooth :) (no Behavior Shield installed though)

Just purchased the Pro 5 version and installed on my old PC. Today it has crashed and there is a file called afwServe.exe taking up all my CPU. Not much else can function. Do I have a virus? I have been unable to properly install on my new laptop. Although it installs and says the new license has been accepted, I still get continual pop-ups telling me my AVAST has expired. I am not computer literate, but my husband is pretty good and he is stumped. Please tell us what to do? Do we uninstall AVAST and try again?
Hope I'm posting right and can find this again for answers! Thank you!

What OS are you running? What AV (and other security software) were you running prior to the new avast! and how did you remove the old av? Please check the name of the process again-I don't recognize afwserve.exe; the avast! 5 service is avastsvc.exe.
-
afwServ.exe is the service of avast! Firewall. Therefore it's not present in avast! Pro, only in avast! Internet Security... so, do you have avast! Pro, or avast! IS installed?
What operating system do you use?
-
Just finished installing Avast 5.0.418 in XP Sp3, using the green slider access and automatic removal of v4.8
Multiple protests from Comodo (Firewall and Defence+ but no Comodo AV) and WinPatrol but this is normal.
No joy with manual update until the second reboot, but all working fine now, I think.
Thank you Avast. The new-look GUI is excellent.

Thanks YoKenny, I followed the steps shown on the MS site and waiting for an email response. BTW the error code is ox800 70005. MS did not list it among the normal error coded, so I requested free email response.
Dcn.Dad
EDIT: Well, miracles of miracles! MS responded within the 24 hours they promised and they not only sent a very useful email (5 pages printed), they also sent two key routines that cleared up the authorizations and the registry - the two areas I suspected to have problems, but before this I had no clue where or what. The process was clear, sequential and with very few of the conditional "ifs" that MS loves so much - most of which don't apply anyway.
Bottom line SP3 installed successfully, although it took over an hour all told - no complaint since successful.
Thanks again for your help, Dcn.Dad

Ever since this latest download, my computer will now freeze for five-second intervals every ten seconds or so when running Foldiing@Home console clients.
Cursor movement, mouse movements, typing input, program launches, Start menu actions, Windows Explorer operations, Task Manager, etc. all freeze up. Never had this problem before 418 update. I have to choose between running Folding@Home or Avast standard shield instead of both as before. Unacceptable.

So it's the Standard Shield? (i.e. stopping the Standard Shield solves the problem?)
What does the Standard Shield's scan history window show, then? (I mean the realtime chart). Any spikes?
Thanks
Vlk

No unusual spikes show at all. The computer just freezes up.
I hate to say this, but after four years of satisfaction, I'm fed up. I'm switching from Avast! to Avira Anti-Vir. I'll try Avast! again maybe in a few months when all the bugs are fixed... but I dare say that Avast version 5 was an answer to a question that no one asked. I was perfectly happy with v4.8.

Fair enough, but how does the release of avast v5 make the v4.8 worse? I.e. why switch if you can keep v4.8?
Thanks

i am noticing a bit of slowdown with browsing and downloads with the newest version. my download speeds are much lower than before and if i disable web shield they jump right up within maybe 10-15 seconds. if i turn it on after that they stay high...i bought 3 year lic's i hope i didnt make a mistake here
-
I will be honest, Vlk. After running Avira for a while now, I find it scans downloads faster than Avast 4.8 or 5, scans the whole PC faster, has a smaller memory footprint. Also, for four years, Avast 4.8 or 5.x would cause Windows Explorer to lock up when moving lots of files from one hard drive to another. I got tired of disabling Avast just to get my work done.

Great point, Vlk. And timely too, because OvenMaster probably isn't the only avast user who is looking around in frustration/desperation for relief from v5 problems. I actually found myself looking at a Staples ad yesterday for Norton AV2010 for 1-3 pcs for $9.99, and I hate Symantec! I am really hesitant to upgrade, even though I believe that there has to be far more satisfied v5 users than dissatisfied (i.e. we see mainly the complaints here on the forum). I just don't feel up to messing with a potential problem, and I honestly am seeing thread after thread of users who are up against it, so to speak. If I do go for v5, I know it will be done with a fresh drive image on hand in case I need to revert. I'd like to compliment you, Vlk, on your steady attendance and participation in this forum at a time when a great many users are experiencing the most difficulty they have ever had with avast. You see, many of us avast users just aren't familiar with an AV that causes problems! I guess it's okay to keep v4.8. There is no need to jump ship, right? :)

+1 Vik, I have installed 377 and 396 on my XPSP3 Gateway with a AMD 64 X2 processor and my system kept crashing, could not even use system restore. Uninstalled both times. I have been using Avast for many years and have recommended to many, but version 5. I will keep using 4.8 until the problems with 5 are gone. I'm tired of uninstalling and reinstalling plus I have dial up so it takes several hours to download the program.

Hi Guys :)
This afternoon I installed Avast 5 Free on my Laptop 8)
Everything seems to be going just fine.
.............. I'm Happy! :D ..............
I'm Not an experienced computer user :-\
Maybe a bit more experienced than most women my age ... But I'm certainly NO expert!
I've been using MSE on my Laptop and Desktop for the last week - Didn't Feel Safe! ::)
My Desktop Still Has - MSE
But If everything keeps going well with Avast 5 on my Laptop...
Next week my Desktop will be getting the Avast 5 treatment too ;D
Top Tip!
Unistall Avast 4.8 .. Before Installing Avast 5
Make sure there are No remaining traces of the old Avast 4.8 left on your computer.
Then... Install Avast 5 ;)

You may have a point. After uninstalling the first avast 5 using windows uninstall, I found several traces of avast using eusing registry cleaner.
Meanwhile, I'm reluctant to try the newest avast 5, just don't have the guts >:( Can anybody confirm I will still get newest virus updates when I re-install 4.8?

the slowdown from he web shield though for me IS affecting my downloads speeds they are maybe half of what they should be and i have a 25mb connection with fios. for me this is def a dealbreaker. im hoping this gets fixed or ill be switching back to my nortons i had before and i like avast so much i bought three internet security keys also and they will go to waste...i was THRILLED with avast till now
i am seeing 26.62 WITHOUT the web shield and that drops to 10.64 WITH THE WEB SHIELD ON... i knew something was slowing me down. i removed avast for now and went back to norton for the time being and all is normal again with my download speeds. verified this similar result on three different machines also.
another test i attempted to download a file that was 2+gb just for testing. with the web shield on it started out around 700k per sec. i let it run to make sure that was steady. after 5 min and it was consistant i turned off web shield and within maybe 30 seconds i was downloading the same file at 1200+k per sec. again turned on web shield and speeds dropped back to around mid 700's
-
Don't remove Avast! Simply put the Web Shield OFF! The resident protection for all files is still ON like for AVIRA Guard! ;)
-
well i know that but i have other av's with web shield that dont do this. trust me i REALLY like this version of avast and want to keep it running i didnt have this problem with past builds or it was not nearly as noticable enough for me to actually test my speeds as it is now, i will not give up on it yet but i hope this gets fixed in next builds quickly..
-
Update:
No random freezes have occurred since the update to 5.0.418.
Well done Avast! Looks like the MBAM conflict is solved!
-
Nice :) Autoupdated no problems last few versions have all been good here though!! Nice to see the avast screen saver back ;D seems all us old users of v4.xx are missing now is the gui scan from inside winrar etc. Any comment VLK? an excellent job from the Alwil Team! Now waiting for Febuary report from av-comparatives IMHO I think this release will ruffle more than a few corporate feathers from your competitors ;) ;) ;)
-
What i did to mine is i've followed the instruction to use the avast clear utility to remove my previous 4.8 version of all its traces. Must be in Safe mode when running the avast clear utility. (I've used the clear utility after uninstalling it using it uninstaller)
[Initially, i got slowing down problems and some disorganized icon when i installed avast 5 on top of 4.8 version, so i uninstalled avast 5, and was not detected by windows as an antivirus.. run the utility in safe mode and reinstalled ver 5 again..hmm.. actually i'm still juggling it in my memory of how i did it .. ::)]
Then from .396 to .418 is smooth all the way.....
-
okay here is something.... i forgot i turned on the .rar extension in the menu to be scanned real time. the file i was testing was a .rar with web shield on and .rar NOT added to the list i am download it almost as fast as without web shield. EXCEPT my speeds when tested are still drastically lower than before from places like speedtest etc... but it seems the rar extension being checked was killing the speed of them during downloading
-
Best version yet!!!
I am really having a much more comforatble time browsing, as well as my Hulu being smoother...that never happened!!!
I feel like I have a new machine... :o
I cant wait for 5.1x!!! I hope to see some new things on the FW opened up...what I dont know, but I have a feeling being rightnow there are so limited 'Expert Settings' but maybve thats all it needs?
Either way, as a home user, I am proud to use Avast! 5 Internet Security and will be purchasing licenses for my mothers, my sisters, and my own personal machine as well. 8)
There are a few minor issues that will need REAL attention beforeI would recommend this package to ANY business :-X
-
... Also, for four years, Avast 4.8 or 5.x would cause Windows Explorer to lock up when moving lots of files from one hard drive to another. I got tired of disabling Avast just to get my work done.
Once or twice a week I'll move several thousand files to a temp folder to sort them out and trim the collection then move them back again. In 4.8 I simply paused the Standard shield while I did that, which made for a huge speed difference, then restored it, both of which were quick and easy. In 5 I could temporarily stop the Files shield (which requires confirmation, same as turning off self-protect), but I found that in 5 there's very little speed difference that way so I just leave the shield on.
Naturally this takes for granted that the files are known (or assumed) to be clean and don't need scanned.
-

I tested again my internet speed in FF (same test as yesterday) with Web Shield ON scanning all files ON and GUESS WHAT: it's never been so fast. I really don't understand what's going on! ::)
-
Getting closer. I ran the clean utility in Safe Mode pointing it at a different Avast Folder each time till it cleaned out everything. Then I reinstalled 5. It came up fine, but I still have a problem with Windows Security alerts.
The system is telling me Avast is turned off even though I know it's on (The ball its turning).
It's also telling me defender is off and won't let me turn it back on.
-
That is a common problem with WSC and not with avast, the WSC is flaky at best.
Try this:
* Click Start, Run and type CMD.EXE
* Type this command and press Enter:
net stop wscsvc
net stop winmgmt
* Using Windows Explorer, rename the folder %windir%\System32\Wbem\Repository. (For example, %windir%\System32\Wbem\Repository_bad.). %windir% represents the path to the Windows directory, which is typically C:\Windows.
* Switch to Command Prompt window, and type the following and press ENTER after each line:
net start winmgmt
net start wscsvc
EXIT
Reboot
-
Follow up. Several restarts later, Windows now sees Avast and everything is fine. Thanks to this forum for the support.
-
So cool. I love this interface but I found some problem in outlook 2007.

okay im going to try to stick it out but please look into the slowdown issues. some on wilders have said the same thing
-
a lot of times, from what i have experienced in installing programs (particularly antivirus) or even appearing to be some computer lockups or unusual behavior ... all that it needs is a restart, and if nothing happens, recheck settings or making sure you have followed instructions, then restart again.. if nothing happens still... research or ask for help. ;D

Just tried the new internet suite and used the Comodo leak test suite and scored 120 / 340. Used the leak test suite on my wifes laptop which has Comodo Internet Security version 4 beta and scored 320 / 340. I think Avast Internet Security needs to pick up a little considering that CIS is a beta and AIS is a public version. I think I will stay with CIS as is performs much better than AIS and it is FREE.

@ shadha - just for the heck of it, try the Leak Test from Gibson Research, http://www.grc.com/lt/leaktest.htm (http://www.grc.com/lt/leaktest.htm).
I have no connection with this site apart fronm using it as a basic security resource, and I derive no benefit from using it or advertising it.

You tried a leak test from Comodo and then somehow were surprised that an IS from Comodo scored well on it? Personally, I would have been surprised if the suite from Comodo scored low on a test designed by Comodo. Have you thought of asking the folk at AlWil to design a test to show how well the Avast! IS does? I am sur they could end up with a score as good as the one Comodo got on it's own test...

To not have to be turning in a thesis to my English teacher when presenting a problem...ie, we know you smart guys need ALL the data you can, but come off your tilting chair for a bit and realize that some people DID NOT goto college :o . Just because its not the techie term doesnt mean we should just go home. Some of us went and did other things with life, like service.
It DOES NOT mean anything about the intelligence. If its getting to you that ONE word is not the word YOU want or would USE...get over yourself. Sometimes my very PC propbelms were solved when my redneck nephew who doesnt know Sata from IDE suggests something using whodilly and whatchamanumber.
TRUE Intelligence is being able to understand things like this 8)
Look past and see the entire scope...not just a word ;D
Try this next time you are about to criticize someones post, or lack of understanding:
What if that were your mom, dad, someone in your family you care about that has not had the opportunity you have to know those terms...would you really talk to them like we have some of those on the forums :-*

Hi guys,
we have just released a new program update to avast 5 (version number 5.0.418).
Thanks
Vlk

I don't have the installer for 5.0.3xx, so until a stable version comes round I'll have to manage without AV or jump ship to AVG, which I'd rather not do as I've used Avast! for a long time and am loyal to what is usually an excellent bit of software,
Please go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools -> Service, and try to start the "avast! antivirus" service. What error message do you get, if any?
Thanks
Vlk
Hi,
Sorry for (very) slow reply.
Tried that. Get a dialog box saying:
"The avast! Antivirus service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service."

Hi,
on Windows 7 I had installed Avast Professional and there was no prolema.
I have now installed Avast securiy internet and I noticed that every time I open the "Computer" folder you enable the driver of the FloppyDisk (issuing annoying "GRRRR"), even if I open a HD and then return back with the arrow in the upper left resumes the F.Disk. You have some solution to delete this annoying problem?
Thank you

On XP with SP3 if a service is set to Automatic, the msg you received is normal; however, the service has been started - it's just not called at the time you started it. In other words, all sounds normal.

How come my copy of Avast (which is set to constantly update itself through my always on cable connection) is telling me version 4.8.1368 is the most up to date version? I even went to the update section of its menu and manually searched and it said it was up to date

somehow you're in luck ;), because direct upgrades from 4.8 to 5.0 don't always work well. So you'd be better off uninstalling you current version completely, reboot, and then install version 5.0.418 from scratch. Start a new thread if you experience issues with registration or anything else. Don't bother trying to use your old avast 4/home license, register directly from the interface in V5.

If you please, when will the Hungarian language Avast! 5 Free? ???
When translators that work for free finish their job I suppose. It's a time consuming work...
-
I mean, of course, I sometimes deal with the translation. I just do not understand that the Avast! Internet Security translation could have been planted in the Avast! Free since it 70% the same. ???
Of course, this is your own idea ... :) :) :)
Too bad I can not help ... :-[ :-[
anyway me and goes perfectly in a Pentium 3 is just me.
(AOpen AX6BC EZ MB, PIII 733 MHz CPU, 384 MB SD-RAM, nVidia Geforce4 MX440 AGP8x 64 MB, 55 GB HDD, Win XP Pro SP3 Hun)
I can only recommend it to all my friends in the Avast! floor, because even I feel I can play almost any game, because only 4-8% CPU load and cause an average of only 10-20 MB of RAM consumed.
Congratulations on this great program! ;D ;D ;D
More good work!

Too bad I can not help ... :-[ :-[
I did not say that... The translators are users who dedicate free time to that.
-
Hungarian version is available for quite some time already... OK, maybe not officially released, but if you download the multi-language installer (or install the English version and on the Language settings page, add the Hungarian module), you can switch to Hungarian.
-
Avast 5 hosed my internet connection on 3 machines on a home network. After hours wasted searching for fixes and monkeying around I am giving up on it. Also hosed my router so I had to reset and reconfigure it to get it to function again. When it ain't broke....DON'T FIX IT! On to the next AV program I guess....until they break it too...

Dcn.Dad
All the on-access services being off - even when retrieving e-mail, instant messaging and browsing - sounds normal?
In the maintenance tab, all the fields are blank - version number, database version, etc. Attempting to connect for VDB updates fails.
I'd be a bit surprised if an on-access scanner was supposed to work by being turned off and unable to connect for updates. Unless it is working in the background and not allowing me to find out anything about it, edit settings, start and stop services, etc - in which case there's a fairly fundamental bug with the UI!
-
hello to every one here;well,i 've just update avast with the current version and i did it successfully...but first, after the installation a window opened showing "you must re-register your account, the antispyware will end up in 3 days".Second, clicking the icon and choosing "open the dialog options" it doesn't allow me to do that.It doesn't allow any option/operation,altough pointing the mouse on the icon appears "your system is protected".
Do i have to worry about that? Please if anyone has got an answer reply me,Thanx in advance.

Hi All,
I have a serious problem after upgrading from 4.8 to 5.0.418.
In my case, Avast disables everytime the computer goes to sleep or even turns off the screen, so everytime I leave the computer for several minutes, I have to turn Avast on again, as I have the message that "Avast! antivirus program has been stopped, or is in an inconsistent state.".
And when I do press Fix or whatever, everything seems to turn back on, but I still get a message saying sth like "the following components could not be started: [and a list of all the components here, mail, IM, p2p etc]".
If it's not fixed soon I will have to uninstall it and go back to 4.8 I guess :/
(I'm running Win 7 Ult 64-bit on a ThinkPad X61t)

you should start a new thread for this, this thread is getting crowded with posts that have nothing to do there. I doubt your issue can happen when the screen is turned off though... possible when the system goes into sleep mode yes, in which case you should uninstall and reinstall.
-
@ Nico Geysen :
Two antivirusprograms at the same time (even if disabled) is ALWAYS trouble. I think you better had uninstalled McAfee Trial before installing Avast.
Maybe start up in safe mode (if that still works) and uninstall McAfee trial. I hope this can help you ...

I'll start a new thread, good idea. But maybe I'll just try reinstalling first..
As to the sleep mode, I thought so too at first, but no. As I've determined it happens by itself after some time being turned on (several minutes I guess). The computer doesn't have to go to sleep, actually I think that nothing needs to happen. The computer can be left unattended, or I can keep browsing the web or whatever - after a few minutes when I check the Avast tray icon I see it's off.. :/
Anyway -> reinstall, and if it doesn't help then new thread. thanks

Hi all, I am new to Avast and this forum so I hope I am doing this right. I have just gotten the new suite and loaded it onto my lap top which is running winXP media edition 32 bit. Running fantastical and no issues. I loaded it onto my desk top that is running winXP Pro 64 bit and for some reason I can not get the firewall to turn on. I am wondering if there is a conflict or perhaps a special fancy work around someone knows about. Any help would be wonderful as I have 3 PCs with this 64bit OS.
Thank you, Branwynn

Can somebody kindly help me about manual daily update of avast V5 in offline mode?

Branwynn,
AFAIK, there are no software fw's for XP 64bit. The built-in Windows fw is may be your only choice.
Try http://www.agnitum.com/download/OutpostFreeInstall64.exe

Thank you for the information rdmaloyjr!! :) The link you have on your post sends me to download a program I never heard of so I didn't. As a novice, I understand you mostly but not completely. What does AFAIK mean please?
I have read other threads that indicate Avast isn't lilely to ever be compatable with 64 bit systems. Is there truth in that or is there hope? Anyone?

As Far As I Know ;D ;D ;D
Outpost firewall is very well known.
I don't think Outpost is a good fw, but there are many that like it.
Outpost fw slows down my internet speed as well as many others.
Some don't have the problem of internet slowing with Outpost fw.
fw: firewall ;D ;D ;D

Do you thing the windows firewall is decent or should I lookg for an external FW solution?
-
@ Branwynn - you could try : http://www.privacyware.com/personal_firewall.html (http://www.privacyware.com/personal_firewall.html) - it runs on 64 bits (though I'm not sure if the process monitor does.
I use PrivateFirewall with avast! (free) and they work perfectly well together (I'm on 32 bits).

mhf,
Thank you very much for the advice. I will research this program and see if it's compatable with my system.
I bought the entire suit for 5 computers and I didn't realize I was going to have incompatability issues. This is frustrating at best.
Will Avast ever catch up to 64 bit systems or should I start scouting for a more compatable software?
-
avast! is compatible with 64bit systems and works correctly there.

Do they update manually?
Which is your firewall?
Did you set to do not use proxy at all (Update > Proxy)?

Hi Branwynn, I use a router-firewall and Windows-firewall...I also believe using common sense online and a quality 3rd party web browser like SRWare Iron with Fanboy's Adblock List is as important as an anti virus.
Sandboxie is free software and also a good security approach.
"KIS - Keep It Simple"
" Myth: Host-Based Firewalls Must Filter Outbound Traffic to be Safe.
Speaking of host firewalls, why is there so much noise about outbound filtering? Think for a moment about how ordinary users would interact with a piece of software that bugged them every time a program on their computer wanted to communicate with the Internet. What would such a dialog box look like? "The program NotAVirus.exe wants to communicate on port 34235/tcp to address 207.46.225.60 on port 2325/tcp. Do you want to permit this?" Ugh! How would your grandmother answer that dialog box? Thing is, your grandmother just got an e-mail with an attachment that promises some rather sexy naked dancing pigs. Then this crazy dialog box appears. We promise: when the decision is between being secure and watching some naked dancing pigs, the naked dancing pigs win every time.
The fact is, despite everyone’s best efforts, outbound filtering is simply ignored by most users. They just don’t know how to answer the question. So why bother with it? Outbound filtering is too easy to bypass, too. No self-respecting worm these days will try to communicate by opening its own socket in the stack. Rather, it’ll simply wait for the user to open a Web browser, then hijack that connection. You’ve already given the browser permission to communicate, and the firewall has no idea that a worm has injected traffic into the browser’s stream.
Outbound filtering is only useful on computers that are already infected. And in that case, it’s too late—the damage is done. If instead you do the right things to ensure that your computers remain free of infection, outbound filtering does nothing for you other than, perhaps, to give you a false sense of being more secure. Which, in our opinion, is worse than having no security at all."

Igor, with all due respect, my Avast internet security suite does NOT work correctly with my winXP pro x64 operating system. The firewall will not turn on and litterally all the advice I get is telling me it's incompatable with a 64 bit OS. Do you have a way to make my Avast FW work with my 64 bit system?
I need a security suite that does it all.... especially since I bought the upgrade for that purpose.
EntitY, thank you for the advice. I have my router FW on and I have win FW on also. Having been hacked pretty bad in the past I am paranoid yes... but I have my reasons. I have been advised to get a HW FW that hooks between modum and router however... while all this advice is awesome and I am learning quite a bit...
I would like to find out if the product I paid for can do what I bought it to do. If not, I am thinking Avast mignt let consumers know their FW won't work on 64 bit systems before they buy.

Any other firewall was installed in the past? Any other security program that could interfere?

A lot of users have it working on x64 systems... ::)

This is a clean install of the OS, no other antivirus programs or firewalls have ever been used. There is a "fix" button at the top I click to no avail. I try to turn the FW on, is doesn't turn on. When I loaded avast onto my lap top running 32 bit os, it runs fine and dandy.
I have asked in several forums, not only this one. If someone out there is running a WinXP Pro x64 bit OS and has this FW working fine, can you tell me the trick? I have seriously spent a lot of time here and as you know once you have put in more time in hours trying to get something to work than you had to work to buy the product... it's get frustrating.
Any and all advice on HOW to get it working would be gleefully welcome.

Im curious did you try to repair the installation ? ;)
If no,
Maybe its worth to try ?

Yes unfortunately, I am vexed at this point. Only thing I haven't done is flash the bios.

Error: The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error. and I can not reinstall Avast! v 4.8.1368, either.
The Icon is grayed out in the tool bar.
Help.

I hate to say it, but after reading all the problems above, and with the problems I'm having, I am soooo regretting having removed version 4.8 and updating to 5.
On the current status page, it says my computer is unprotected and when I click the button that says 'Fix Now', nothing happens. Just below that it shows the following message:
'The avast! antivirus program has been stopped, or is an inconsistent state. Please re-start the program to resume protecting your system.'
To the right of that message is a small yellow bullet icon with 'Start program' button. I click that, nothing happens. I closed the processes in the process library to shut Avast down, then restarted it, and it still shows the same messages. I uninstalled the program, restarted my computer, re-downloaded the program from the site. When I went to run the install it said the program detected an issue that requires me to reboot my computer before I could run the installation, and if I continue to run the installation it could result in problems. So I canceled out of the re-install, rebooted my computer, then ran the installation. At the end of the installation it wanted me to reboot again, so I did, and when I restarted, the program still showed the above messages. Nothing was fixed in the re-installation of the program.
Up until now I have never had a problem with Avast, and in fact, I absolutely love it. It was, in my opinion, the best antivirus program available, until now. If I can get my version 4.8 back again, I will continue to run the program, but seriously, something needs to be done with this new version, because it just isn't working. I honestly do not wish to have to revert to AVG or some other anti-virus program, so please, please do something to fix this new version so that it actually works!
Seeing as I can't seem to put in a signature on this site as I cannot find the option to do so, I'll post this info here:

My system is Win XP Pro 64bit and I have used Avast free since I built it roughly a couple of years ago. I've upgraded as they came along ( now on 5.0.594) and have had no problems except a slowing of Avast at startup.
I use Windows firewall, Superantispyware Pro and Malwarebytes. Preview pane in OE turned off and that's it, touch wood never had a problem.
PS
I really just joined the forum to thank everyone for such a great free Anti Virus programme.

well I bought the suite for all 4 computers and has been working fantastic. :)
