Title: Avast! vs Eset
Post by: marc9401 on March 26, 2010, 05:37:54 PM
Hey,
I know that this question is already asked a million times, but once again: What do you think, which one is better in overall? NOD32 or AVAST5 ??
I mean for me it's important to be good at real-time protection, and not too consume too much resources. So considering these 2 views, please help me decide which one to use. (All the other stuffs aren't important for me e.g.: antispam, ease of use etc..)

No antivirus is perfect.  Avast and Nod32 both hace decent interfaces, decent detections, low false positives, both are low on resources.
By the way are u considering the firewall as well? Then I can not tell about that.
But Avast has a free version with many features while Nod32 has nothing such. So, why don't you try Avast free a few days. May be you will fall in love with Avast.
What I don't liked about Nod32 is that it auto-quarantines threats but Avast gives you alart about threats or can do predefined action with an attractive voice-over message.

So the last versions of Eset (V4.0) are heavy compared to other versions and a proccess called ekrn.exe eats a lot of resources sometimes consuming 100% of CPU  ::)

avast! is free, is light on resources and i think that offers equal or better protection than Eset.
remember that avast have 7 shields of protection and excelent detection!!  ;)
You must give a try to avast  ;)

greetings

i own both and i personally use avast on my own system as good as eset may be it has failed me in the past. as well as the firewall just has sooo many issues even more then avast 5 is does imo. and i agree with the newest builds ess has become much slower for me and heavy

I used NOD32 for the past 3 years. The obvious thing that hits you is upgrading. There is no notification that an upgrade is available. I usually found out while surfing the Wilders Security forum. Eset requires you to go to the download page, download the upgrade, insert your key, and finish the upgrade process. Avast notifies you with a pop up, and you know the rest.  ;)

So fast update, low ressource, scan fast and dont eat your cpu,hot interface, awesome protection for free home users,etc... What you want more ? A Firewall ? Then try out their trial of avast! and find out which solution you feel better. (Free,Pro,Suite) its up to you to choice. ;)

My personal vote goes to Avast, had a NOD32 license for a few years. Detection wise they seem about the same from my experience but I've had far fewer problems with stability and what not with Avast.

I used to use Eset severl years ago and I never felt protected at all, every time I used to look for spyware it was found in my system, after using Avast I forgot about this problem, now Avast runs in my 3 computers very soft that I can't feel it is there.

Off topic:Today I went to play games at orange expo at the time visiting the place and admiring the laptops also and at my surprise when I saw the notebook, it was wow so small but with a harddisk memory of 160 GB
Which is obviously very impressive hehehe!

Well avast free is for gaming also!
There were quad core computer with games such as counter strike,WarCraft, Prince of persia something...And they used avast :)

There was also iphone from apple and big screen computer which the price is about Rs 45 000(divide by 30 to get into us dollar)

It was somehow great to touch a quad core computer once in my life hehehe!

I liked NOD32 a lot during the 2.0-2.5 versions. Version 3 and 4 have really bad interface and as much as they bragged about performance back in the days it's really slow now. We have NOD32 at work and whenever i download anything slightly larger the entire system locks up or goes to a crawl mode because HTTP scanner is checking the file.
It's really annoying. But with avast! it goes through like it doesn't even have HTTP scanner. It's that fast. And it doesn't matter what kind of system is used, slow, fast, doesn't matter. And their detection is not really soemthing to brag about anymore. Proactive detection is decent but in general, i don't know. Honestly i trust avast! more in general.

Compare what you offer Avast! free and Nod32!

Avast! 5 free

- Boot time scanner
- Behavior shield
- Many settings
- in many languages
- decent interface

Nod32

- one naked snail, which nevertheless represents a well in VB and AVC.

Let us look at the facts.

In the AV Comparatives Dynamic Test which according to me is the most important test of all, Avast beat Eset.
http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparativesreviews/dynamic-tests

Now if we are going to consider that Avast is Free and that v6 will have considerable improvements, I presume we can safely say that Avast is better.

PS: But I prefer Kaspersky Internet Security.lol

IMP: Avast 6 vs ESET 2011
avast uses less CPU usage than eset
but detection rate is more of eset
referred from avast forums and community like vb 100 and virus total
as both of av are nice but nothing is the best
if not updated avast it gives more false positives than eset and if not updated eset                                   d     detection rate is less so for those
who do not have a net connection i prefer avast 6 + mbam or avast + sas or avast + threat  fire.
     thanks for ur support.

I don't much about ESET 2011 or Nod32.

What I do know is the ESET AV on-line scanner

1. can be used along with avast!
2. will work with W8-DP.
3. is very slow.
4. has occasionally caught some stuff that AIS has allowed in and missed.  However, in my experience that has been rare.
