Title: How to restart Avast
Post by: ddoctor on August 04, 2011, 06:32:23 PM
I believe a current infection has shut down avast. I have a red 'x' through the icon and when I open it it says that service has stopped. I am unable to manually restart the program. Also it appears that preboot scan is disabled somehow. I am trying to get rid of the infection currently but any suggestions would be appreciated. I am using avast internet security 6, windows xp sp3

Try doing a repair of Avast go to add & remove programs click uninstall Avast scroll down to repair. Try a scan with Malewarebytes also.

Well definitely there are viruses. I removed a bunch with both malwarebytes and avast manually in safe mode, but unfortunately I tried to repair avast as you suggested and it still cannot be turned on

I could not upload the OTS file because it was too large! Could not zip it either! So after I removed the viruses with MBAM I just did a clean install in safe mode. Seems to be fine now
