Avast! causing computer "freeze"
« on: March 01, 2009, 04:13:04 PM »
Please help. After Avast's latest automatic update, my computer began freezing up whenever I tried to do anything at all. After a few days of frustration, I shut down Avast! and no more freezing. I once had Zone Alarm on this computer, but it was removed by a professional when Avast was installed, and I find no trace of it on the computer now. My operating system is Windows XP, Service Pack 2. My keyboard and mouse are USB/wireless.

Please let me know if there is any more information I can provide.

Thanks so much for your help,

Sue

If you use ZA firewall and avast you should exclude the scanning of the tracking.log which we believe is the cause of the avast hanging up.

For the Standard Shield provider (on-access scanning):
Left click the 'a' blue icon, click on the provider icon at left and then Customize.
Go to Advanced tab and click on Add button. Write there:
?:\System Volume Information\tracking.log

For the other providers (on-demand scanning such as the screen-saver or the Simple User Interface):
Right click the 'a' blue icon, click Program Settings.
Go to Exclusions tab and click on Add button. Write there:
?:\System Volume Information\tracking.log

The System Volume Information folder belongs to Windows System Restore.
The best things in life are free.

Do you mean a full freeze or just you can't click or anything? like start menu opens and things
