Title: avast firewall exception
Post by: tck9 on August 26, 2013, 04:50:25 PM
I'm using avast 8.0.1496 on Windows 8.1. I have my Windows firewall's outbound policy set to deny all connections (except for apps I allow through). The avast update is failing. Which exe do I need to add to allow avast to update? There are a dozen or so exe's in the avast install directory. I added AvastUI.exe, AvastEmUpdate.exe, and ashUpd.exe, but it's still failing. It definitely has something to do with the fw, because when I disable it, it updates fine.

You've to allow "avast.setup", it only shows up if an update runs.

How can you allow it in the windows firewall, when it doesn't exist at the time you're adding a new firewall rule?

That's one of the problems with the windows firewall " not very user friendly " I don't know whether one of the windows firewall add-on's would help in this instance but better still would be a good third party firewall that provides much more configuration and ease of use ( Private Firewall, Online Armor, Comodo ) for free versions or Outpost for a top paid solution if you're not wanting to use the avast firewall provided in their Suite.
