Title: No Avast tray icon
Post by: spg SCOTT on October 20, 2008, 06:01:09 PM
My computer is not showing the Avast tray icon even when I run Avast.
I have tried all of the obvious things (Taskbar and start menu properties, customise, Always Show, Show tray icon, avast settings) but don't know what else to try.

It might be related to me having to turn off some services because before this no icons showed up, now I get all but the Avast icon

Any ideas?

avast! icon missing - As a temporary measure until this is resolved you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers).  Right click on the file and select Send To, Desktop (create shortcut). You will need to run this after each boot until the problem is resolved.

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard or OnGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?

Or Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder.

genius, no, but I would be interested to know what was the culprit ?

Or if no culprit identified which option you took to resolve it, this might help others.

I used this method and put it in the "all users" startup folder

As for the culprit I am not too sure.
Before this I had the problem of no icons at all showing on startup until a restart of explorer, or re-login (not reboot) and so after a google search I disabled:

Universal Plug and Play Device Host
SSDP Discovery service

from Run: service.msc

This seemed to work for all of the other icons but avast, which I think may have been the only one that occasionally showed up before.

Hope this helps and if it can help others even better.

Normally if there isn't one of the usual culprits, other security applications killing it (you didn't answer the question about other security apps) without asking you or your not knowing what it was and blocking it, then it could be an indication that the installation might not be correct (may require a repair or reinstallation to correct).

The services you mention should have no impact ion the avast icon.

That is why I tend to go with the temporary desktop shortcut to start the icon. This way it is possible to try and find what killed the ashDisp.exe or see if a repair of avast or reinstall would have resolved it. Having placed an entry in the all users startup folder we wouldn't know if we actually found the reason for the missing icon.

Sorry about that heres the list of security programs I have installled:

1. Just wondering but how would you find what is killing it?
2. Should I try this to find out what is killing it?

Well none of those you listed as far as I'm aware would block the creation of a new startup entry. If you had mentioned one of the ones that I originally listed then you could have looked in its quarantine area and see if that was wewer the ashDisp.exe file and registry entry were being blocked.

You could try looking in any of their respective quarantine areas and see if it was being blocked, but some how I doubt it. SpywareBlaster is passive and HiJackThis although just an analysis tool you could fix the entry for ashDisp.exe but the file location would alert you to it being in the avast4 folder.

If you didn't find any thing I would have then suggested an avast repair to see if that restored the icon and possibly any other unseen issues, the missing icon could be the tip of the iceberg so to speak.

If that failed (didn't restore the icon) then a clean reinstall, but with the all users startup entry in place you wouldn't be able to do either with any confidence as it would appear anyway.

Windows Defender and the avast Tray icon work quite well together on my system.  :)

I removed the shortcut from the startup folder and have repaired the program through the add/remove list and it seems to have fixed the problem for now, I hope. :)

Thanks guys

You're welcome.

That is the best option as a repair might also have fixed any thing else if the installation was flawed.

So does WinPatrol and many other programs that doesn't make them incompatible.....

I never said that they're incompatible... just a shot in the dark trying to discover what made that...
