Firefox crashing
« on: October 18, 2008, 08:48:09 PM »
I have had firefox version 3.0.3 since it was released and it has been great, however since yesterday it has been crashing every few minutes and on random websites, has anyone got a solution to this as I have read a few people are also experiencing this as well and some believe web adverts trigger it to crash

ps I have disbaled all plugins and it still happens, its a windows xp computer

There is an option to run it using a new profile (see below) or in safe mode, no add-ons, etc. is this the option you tried or did you just disable your add-ons individually.

You could also try creating a new profile and see if that works as the new profile wouldn't have any changes to about:config, add-ons, etc. If that works then you could delete the other profile and use the new one as the default and start from scratch building your add-ons one at a time and test after each add-on..

If the new profile doesn't work, but it works in safe mode then I would suggest a complete uninstall and reinstall adding only essential add-ons (security based) one at a time, NoScript, WOT, Dr Web link checker, etc. If that gives no problem then it would be building your add-ons one at a time and test after each add-on..

Firefox has been crashing for a few days for me too, but only 1-2 times per day. I'm getting high CPU too, sometimes at 100%. The next time it happens I'll see if I can get more info from the crash report. Interesting point about the advertisments, ad-intense sites seem to be where it occurs for me. I'm also noticing ads opening in a new Window and that never happened before. I don't believe this is related to Avast 4.8.1256 beta as I'm sure Firefox crashed at least once before I installed the Avast beta. When I get a minute I'll try installing Firefox 3.1 beta 1 to see if that helps.

It is totally unrelated to avast, with these additional ads if you don't already have it get the firefox add-on, AdBlock Plus http://adblockplus.org/en/.

Personally I wouldn't recommend installing the FF 3.1 beta, a) it won't help you identify the problem and b) many of your add-ons wont work with it.

The ones that pop-up in new windows may be somewhat more suspicious, but see if adblock plus takes care of those first.

Thanks DavidR, I already have ABP and was able to find a blockable item that seems to have stopped it. I ended up doing a fresh install of Firefox 3.0.3, CPU is back to normal now. Too soon to say yet if the crashes have stopped.

You're welcome. I think it wise to stick with 3.0.3 and wait for the release of 3.1 and even give it a little time after that to allow add-ons to catch up.

Well I wouldn't have thought that this would be related to the firefox freezing issue of this topic.
