Personally it would be a cold day in hell when I disable avast to install an application. Basically I would like to know what they have to hide/fear from having your AV enabled during install; a time when I feel you need it most. So these occasions are rare and more the exception than the rule, such as when running other security software analysis, etc.

What is the application ?
Do you know why they say you have to disable ?

It is possible to disable avast, by right clicking on the avast tray icon, avast! shields control, Disable for X duration, see image, click to expand.

Thanks for the solution. Who would have thought the turn offs would be located in such a hidden locations. Most icons, when right clicked, come up with turn off in the menu. Many software installations ask that running applications be turned off before installing. some actually say to disable anti-virus software.

Usually you don't need to turn off AV software to install anything.
Which installer asks you to do so..?? ???

Never take things like that on face value, always question why, as there really should be very few occasions when this is necessary. This is very, very, old school thinking to disable an AV to install something and shouldn't be so much of an issue on modern AVs.

That is why the questions on program and reason.

I would like to know what installer tells you to disable your anti-virus because it's most likely a virus :o

Welcome to the forum.  :) I've used avast! since 2003 and have installed 1000's of programs since that time.
I've also uninstalled many of those programs.
The one thing I've never done was to turn off avast! It's what's keeping my system safe.
Any program that's afraid to be checked by the antivirus program I'm using,
must have something to hide.
I've also never turned avast! off to update my system. Happy to say, I've never had a problem because of it.  :)

Well, things like service packs and crappy software tells you to turn off your A/V because crappy A/V's tend to block things that shouldn't be (I'm looking at you Norton / Symantec) but Avast seems to play well.

Keep it on and install your software, you'll more than likely notice no problems.

Hi,
I thought that I would add the following to balance all of the negative comments I read here about shutting down Avast.

There can be some suspicion that any anti-virus suite can interfere with the operation of a program.  When this occurs and a debugging session is launched one of the tests that can be made is to stop the anti-virus program and run the malfunctioning program.  The sane thing to do is to disconnect the Ethernet cable from the test system or shutdown the significant wireless node that supplies the test system with all those potential nasties during the test.  This isolates the test system from the baddies out there, allows the test to produce the answer needed (pro or con to the assumed causal relationship tof the malfunction.)  q.e.d

My experience with AVAST's 'shutdown' menus indicated, upon turning it back on, that there were three 'filters' that were to be restored.  Does anyone know if that produces a complete shutdown of AVAST?

For me to believe is insufficient for you to know. -- rodalsa
