I'm afraid the offline updater is not available at the moment.

Is there not a work around like in 4.8 by disabling self-defence, copying the 400.vps file ?

Say copy the latest VPS update folder from an on-line system C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\defs\10012000 and past it into the off-line system ?

Off-topic note: When do old VPS version folders get removed as there is duplication in the folders at 47MB a time.

Interesting question, David, and add me to the "huh??" chorus.  I did a successful (manual) defs/engine update this morning, and while it seemed to take a fair bit longer than I'd been used to with 4.8, I didn't bother paying much attention to the details, or checking files afterwards.

Wonder if this means no more incremental updates, or if it's one more part of the still-in-progress updating thing they're still working on?  Surely there's no need for before-and-after near-duplicates of the full defs?

This is an incremental update, believe me on dial-up I would know, but the new VPS version folder would copy over stuff from the last version folder which hadn't changed and with the incremental update added to the old the new signatures created in that folder.

So you aren't downloading 47MB, that is the total size of the folder and for each new VPS update if the old one isn't cleaned out it will rapidly use HDD space at 47MB a pop.

Thanks, David ... it took maybe 30 or 45 seconds as compared with about 12-15 before, so I'll agree that even on my broadband it couldn't have been anywhere near the full file.

Hopefully this is just one of those glitches in the updating process (of which there still seem to be quite a few) which Alwil's still working on, and we'll see a fix soon.  In the meantime, I'd probably be willing to gamble that it's OK to manually delete the older set, unless maybe it's being kept for insurance till they get the updater bugs worked out.

(Edit) Be interesting to see whether such files and folders continue to accumulate, or if what's kept is just the current one plus the previous one.  We should know soon enough, if they maintain their twice a day routine.

Curiouser and curiouser ... I just checked Explorer (for the first time today), and only the latest one's in my defs folder.  Admittedly it's been several hours since I did the update, so possibly the earlier one was there at the time and somehow got auto-deleted since then.  But that seems highly unlikely.

Hmm ... I just checked back to your original mention of this, and there's no indication of whether you got auto-update to work or if you did a manual check.  Wonder if which way you update makes a difference now?

Auto updates are working for me (check the windows event viewer, antivirus, information type entries incorrect not on 5.0), as are manual updates.
