novice needs answers

Hi, am novice and have downloaded avast, everything is fine. do i have to do anything else? eg settings n stuff. will it just do its job? will it inform of any infections n removal of them? sorry if i sound dim. thanks in anticipation.

 First off, what was the previous antivirus program you were using and what
 steps did you use to "remove" it from your computer ?

 To get better acquainted with Avast, you should read our "FAQs" at
 www.avast.com/eng/faq-avast-4-home-professional.html .

 As to Settings, would be wise to RIGHT-click the "a" icon, then click
 "Program Settings" and go through each menu "Item", making your Choices;
  especially do each of the "Update" Menus .

my previous av was symantec corporate edition-crap. i used the uninstall link from one of your posts. it has definitely gone.

1.Avast will inform you if there's new updates and others...
2.Yes avast will inform/warn you if there's false positive or virus.
