Title: New avast 2014 & zone-alarm free firewall
Post by: xsteveuk on October 17, 2013, 01:47:10 PM
Hi,
I really like the new look to avast free anti-virus :)

Before the update I was running Avast 8 free anti-virus  with no problems :)

Since the update I have had to remove zone-alarm free firewall as I could not get avast & zone-alarm to load
And show the icons on the tray -

After a PC reset to an earlier time - and uni-stalled zone-alarm firewall
Then a re-install of avast 2014 - the avast 2014 runs and works perfectly -

But I cant seem to get zone-alarm free firewall to work with avast 2014 free anti-virus

Is avast 2014 free anti-virus not compatible with zone-alarm free firewall?

Thanks - Steve

Update!

I did ask on zone-alarm support forum to quote what they said!

Its not uncommon that at each AVAST new release they break compatibility with ZA. Best to let them know so that they can work on a fix. Always assuming there is an issue/bug.

Thanks,

So Thought I would post here if their is a problem with the new version 9 2014 free anti-virus
A compatibility issue  avast 9 free anti-virus And Zone-alarms free firewall..

Hi,

Thanks for the reply - I get no error showing - When I install the free zone- firewall
Avast & the free firewall will not load - as in windows will start up OK but none of the icons show on the system tray ie, avast or zone-alarm icon none of them are showing - If Un-install the zone-alarm free firewall
And re-start the PC - Avast works and runs as it should with the avast icon on the system tray.

So thought it might be a capability problem ZA firewall Free - and avast free ant-ivirus

Were avast 8.0.1497 and ZA free working previously ?

Unfortunately it is over nine years ago that I abandoned ZA, so I can't be a lot of practical help with its settings.

Are the avastSvc.exe, instup.exe, files allowed internet access/trusted applications ?
There are other avast files but these two are the main ones. Though that should only interact with avasts ability to connect to the internet, not stop it from running.

Yes avast 8 and zone-alarm free firewall both worked together and had no problem

It since the upgrade to avast 9 2014 I have the problem with the ZA free firewall

If I remember When zone- alarm popped up message  I clicked as trusted

If you can check in the Program Control section of ZA (sorry I can't recall the correct name) and see if those two files are listed. If they are try deleting them as ZA in the past has blocked even when they were allowed.

I don't know if ZA has a learning mode my firewall and many others have, if so set that up to learn and reboot. Hopefully that would allow ZA to see how other programs work and add their files to its data.

It has to be a capability issue somewhere - If I Uni-stall avast 9 free-antivirus 2014
ZA free firewall loads and shows in the system tray

If download avast free anti-virus while I have zone-alarm free firewall both icons wont load on the system tray

For now I removed ZA free firewall - and don't have any issue with the new avast upgrade

Thanks to all for your prompt replies and suggestions

All very much appreciated

Thanks again - Steve :)

You're welcome.

There are other free firewalls that can be used with avast. I have been using the Outpost Firewall for even longer than the nine years I have been using avast and that has been fine.

Though I have the Outpost Firewall Pro which is a paid version, some considerable time ago I bought a lifetime license for the price of a years subscription.   Agnitum periodically offer this deal and it is currently on offer.

Providing your system is clean of malware then avast should run with the windows firewall just fine.

All well and good if your system remains clean and a browse of the viruses and worms forum will show that this isn't always the case. So no point in waiting until the horse has bolted to close the stable door.

Good point.
However.then we must look at the software which is supposedly keeping malware out.

It is not the function of a firewall to prevent malware and if malware does get on to a system then the firewall is not at fault but rather the anti-malware product being used.

It doesn't matter what the software is, nothing is 100% so it is wise to take precautions. So it is exactly the same why wait till the horse has bolted to do something about it.

It is just one job of a firewall to prevent unauthorised outbound connections, in many cases that could be malware related. Trying to connect to upload data harvested from your system (another firewall task on some firewalls), download instructions/data for use in spamming/DDOS or to download more malware.

Sorry david but i must disagree.(with all due respect).
I dont believe outbound notifications etc are terribly important.
If something on your system is making non-legit connections then that program should be removed.

The key job of a firewall is to keep non legit connection attempts out.

You can disagree as much as you like, do what you wish on your system, but when I offer advise to users I air on the side of safety.

I have no possibility to install Avast on my laptop. It is just not possible. It denies to access the internet and almost prevent me from using my laptop.
When I install it I get some questions from ZoneAlarm and one of them is that a program want to prevent Avast update, I think, from running and when I have the Avirus installed everything goes wrong. I cannot find an issue in ZoneA that I can change into positive and the OS ask me to start the AA but nothing happens.
Well, I installed the new antivirus application from ZA and will try with that until someone can give me a solution.

Have a nice day.
OS - Win 7
ZA - Ver. 11

Read my Reply #4 http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=137016.msg1002238#msg1002238 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=137016.msg1002238#msg1002238) as it is most likely ZA blocking one or both of those files.

EDIT:
You don't say what avast version you are using ?

Just for your reference, I use avast! free anti-virus together with ZoneAlarm free firewall during the past almost 7 years without problem. Recently I upgaded avast! free 8.0.1497 to avast! free 2014.9.0.2006 under ZoneAlarm Free Firewall 11.0.768.000, and they function well.

Regarding ZoneAlarm Free Firewall, I erroneously updated first the old version to a new ZoneAlarm Security because the new free firewall is a part of the same. So I uninstalled it and applied ZoneAlarm "clean.exe" before reinstalling the ZoneAlarm Free Firewall. But it was about 3 months before upgrading avast! free.

Same problem here. I have over 224 office systems of various configurations around the campus where I work with this compatibility issue. Getting Avast and Zone Alarm to consider there is a compatibility issue is like having Apple help Microsoft. I've spent over 40 hours with customer service from both companies and all I get is they don't have a problem. I'm not trying find if they have a problem, I'm trying to let them know I have a problem. I've sent system specs, even offered to send in via Registered Air a common system for them to experience the problem.

Basically, all the systems worked well with Avast 8 latest version and latest version of Zone Alarm. After trying to upgrade to Avast 9, an error occurred claiming Avast needs to restart to continue the upgrade. After the restart, the error was there again and prompted for another restart. After a day of restarts, yes same error. Uninstalling didn't work as the OS couldn't find the avast.  Only work around was removing Zone Alarm, then restart and pop there's Avast 9. Then uninstall Avast 9, re-install Avast 8 and put Zone Alarm back on. Then both worked. Doing this for 224 systems wasn't good. Especially when I just recommended last week for Queens University to consider a site License for 32K systems for Avast Enterprise. I need this problem to be replicated and fixed please.

windows 8.1, I've the last version of ZA free firewall 12.0.104.000 and Avast free antivirus 2014 9.2006, I'm unable to setting ZA, if I unistall Avast all work fine, it's a bug of Avast. fix it please.

Systems are currently running version 8.0.1497 as anything with build 9 just isn't ironed out yet. I'm glad that Avast is still supporting Build 8. I will keep trying every few months to see if updates to Build 9 touch on the problem.
