You don`t need a key for avast 5 if you register online

see page 8

You can use old 4.8 license key with avast 5.

Not entirely correct:
Only if you install 5.0 over 4.8, then it preserves the old registration key of 4.8 information converting it for use with 5.0.

If you do a clean install, then that information isn't preserved and the old key won't work in 5.0. You will have to re-register as stated in the above .pdf file, page.

Hi DavidR

Yes that is what I did. Not only did the Avast 5 Free installation keep my 4.8 License Key, but it also overwrote and/or cleaned-out my old 4.8 system files (apparently - unless files have been taken over and renamed if still relevant). It installed as 108 MB 3 days ago and is now 109. Does that sound about right, DavidR?

Looking at the files - it all looks more streamlined. For example if I discover that Avast starts "bloating" again with the old "asw1" in Reports - I guess it will be esy to trace elsewhere.

It is a GREAT bit of GEAR : CONGRATULATIONS to you all!

I back mine up with Threatfire Free (plus Windows Defender as standard for Vista), and use SuperAntiSpyware for a weekly scan (as you recommended). I use NoScript on my Firefox browser. I

should add that AVAST caught the real nasties AHEAD of the others mentioned; the latter seemed to pick up false positives however. That was the main reason I ditched AVIRA Free for AVAST.

Thanks!

It preforms an effective uninstall of 4.8 before completing the 5.0 instalation (but retaind the license information).

Size will grow as VPS updates are done and log files updates, etc. but it sounds about right.

Hi,

This is how to activate a key in avast 5.0 FREE.
Double click the avast icon.
Go to maintenance, Regestration.
You should be bale to see a screen that your avast is soon to be expired and there will be a button asking you if you want to register a free key.

I downloaded my client from the dutch website but I don't think that would make a difference.  ;)

Edit : Also after I registered trough the client the key was activated instantly.

DavidR

I installed Avast Pro a few days ago, I had to do a re install.  I downloaded again, entered my licence key but the programme is telling me that it is a trail version?  Clicking link " I have a licence key" does not work.  Any advice please.

What license key, the one for avast 4.8 won't work on avast 5 ?

- avast! 5 Pro license convert from 4.8 Pro license. Try http://www.avast.com/resend-license.php now, fill in the form giving your email and 4.8 Pro License key and they will send the new license file to you (presumably it will check you have a legit 4.8 Pro license first).

I have a question about the yearly license key, I just installed the new version over the old 4.8,,now,,come next Dec 2010 when my lic is ready to expire..will I still have to apply for a new registartion key? The reason I ask is that on the old version you could actually get a new key and enter it prior to the expiration date of the present key. On the new version I can't even see where you would enter the new key,,unless when your old one is getting ready to expire the program will then allow it,,I hope I'm not confusing anyone,,I'm just not that good with computers. Anyone understand what I'm trying to explain,,thanks all.

Woops sorry,,just read the post above about how you go about re-registering yearly.
