As an optional step, you can use the following license key to register Fake Smart HDD and stop the fake alerts.

Please keep in mind that entering the above registration code will NOT remove Fak Smart HDD from your computer , instead it will just stop the fake alerts so that you'll be able to complete our removal guide from our malware experts more easily

Did that. It worked as described.
However PC is still unusable.
RogueKiller helped a little (now taskmanager is availiable) however explorer.exe is still infected and I can't see any HD contents (I'm typing from another PC - it doesn't apear to  be a worm)
I'll try hijack this and let you know.
In your experience. What's the average time it takes you to release an update in such problems? (please note that ( typed "average")

Thank you,
keep the good work.

After updating Avast engine and rebooting (needed by avast) Avast found a rootkit (red window) and asked for startup scan.
Computer never booted after that.

So be careful about this.

Now I'm trying to find an old bootable cd in my stash in order to execute a "fdisk /mbr" command in case I can salvage the boot sector.

That was all with Avast - Smart HDD war.

@ mikaelrask

FYI the guide you're reffering to is of no use. AT ALL.

You see when theory comes in contrast with reality, reality always wins.

That "solution" requires a working explorer.exe to install programs, alas after infection you can only see external discs.

All other discs, even during booting to command line are "empty".

I do have tools where I can work outside of windows...  I would never recommend using the so called register key as you do not know what other things they will download or do.
