Hi all. This is my first post here.
I've just switched from AVG Free to avast! Home Edition and one of the things I missed from AVG was the ability to schedule a full scan. After searching through the forums here I found out that this feature is only available in the Pro version of avast!. However, I did come across several people asking about this feature in these forums as well as a few hints on how to go about it. I decided to give it a whirl. I figured out how to schedule a scan using the avast! shell extension program, ashQuick.exe (the program that kicks in the scanner when you right-click on a file and choose "Scan" from the popup menu), and the Windows Task Scheduler. I thought I'd share this trick with others. Here's how to do it:
(NOTE: These instructions are for Windows XP and assume Windows is set up to use "single click" to open items. I would assume the steps would be similar for other versions of Windows.)
- Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Scheduled Tasks
- Click (or double-click) on Add Scheduled Task
- In the wizard that appears click Next - a list of programs will appear
- Click Browse and navigate to C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4 (or whatever folder in which you installed avast!)
- Click (or double-click) on the file ashQuick.exe
- On the next screen give the task a name of your choice and choose how often you want it to run and click on Next
- On the next screen choose the appropriate scheduling options and click on Next
- On the next screen enter the user name and password for the Windows user you want the task to run as, then click on Next
- On the next screen check the box for the option "Open advanced properties for this task when I click Finish", and then click Finish
- On the next screen, in the "Run" field you will see the path for the ashQuick.exe program. After the closing quote enter a space and type in the path(s) that you want scanned. Multiple paths must be separated by a space and any paths that include a space in the path name must be in quotes. Here are a couple of examples:
"C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe" C: E: - this will scan the entire contents of the C: and E: drives
"C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe" "C:Program Files" E:Downloads - this will scan the contents of the Program Files folder on the C: drive and the Downloads folder on the E: drive, including all subfolders (Note the first path is in quotes due to the space in the folder name "Program Files")
- Click OK
- In the Scheduled Tasks window, from the menu, click on Advanced and choose "Start Using Task Scheduler"
- To test your newly created task, from the Scheduled Tasks window, right-click on the task's icon and choose "Run" from the popup menu. If the scan doesn't begin correctly you'll get an error message. The problem is most likely in the scan path (missing quotes or something like that.)
- Close the Scheduled Tasks window
Keep in mind that this is just a "quick scan" and I'm not sure with what sort of depth that ashQuick.exe scans, but it beats nothing at all.
I don't know if there is any way to pass other parameters to the ashQuick.exe program for various options like scanning depth, what to do if a virus is encountered, etc. If anyone has any info on how to pass other parameters please feel free to add the information to this thread.
Lastly, I wouldn't suggest using the screen saver scanner in conjunction with this scheduled scan, as they may end up running at the same time and cause conflicts.

The scheduling feature is on avast! Pro version.
With ashQuick.exe and Windows Task you cannot use more parameters then the ones you specified (I guess).
Even the ashcmd.exe (command-line) is only for Pro version.

I've changed it to weekly, but AVG Free ran a full scan every night. You couldn't change the frequency in AVG Free.
Maybe, if the mods think this is helpful enough, they'll make the thread sticky.

But that was the only option AVG gave you. At least it gave you the option, which Avast Home does not. That's the whole reason I started this thread.

The virusscan performed in the screensaver mode works fine for me! :)
I only scan my hard drive (200 GB) every 2 weeks or so,....

I'm afraid you cannot start your own tasks using ashQuick... only using ashCmd.exe.

Maybe you do not use a password to not have to fill it each boot.
I know it's a security lack, but if you want, there is some auto-login programs that can make your XP automatically logon.
You will have a password (and will be able to schedule scans) and will automatically boot.

You are asked to use the Task page Browse button to locate the application. Problem is, I did use the Browse button to locate the application. As far as the Password is concerned, I do enter and reenter it. The problem here is that I have never used a password to log-on to WinXP, and I don't care about ever having to use one. So I think I'd best just forget about scheduling my scans.

Thanks for the link Technical. It works super, and with a lot less hassle than the Windows Scheduler. Use the browse button to locate the program you want to run, and use the Parameters window to put in the drive you want scanned, for me C:, and that's all there is to it. There will be an icon placed in the system tray, near the clock. This icon cannot be removed if you want the program to run at the scheduled time.

It works perfectly (although no more updates). I can't imagine my life without NetRun...
NetRun will 'RUN' a 'List' of programs only when a internet connection is detected, and close/kill the same 'List' when the connection is lost. When I upgraded my machine to XP, the program that I was using stop working so I was forced to write this program.

If you have a little patience, I'd like to suggest you AutoIt: the best macro maker for Windows.
You can run scripts or you can compile them into an exe file.
It's very powerful... Not that hard (can handle keyboard and mouse movements, etc.).

Surely it would be best to plan the time that the scheduled task is to happen when your computer will definately be on ???
Can you not schedule it to happen late at night (there might be an option to have the PC shutdown on completion).

For whatever reason, I did not see a Security tab on the Properties screen of the Scheduled Task.
The scan failed to run because I had not password set.
Finally figured out that I needed to go into my Profile Accounts and set a password for the user account (admin). When I did that and entered the password on the Schedulted Task Properties, the scan ran succesfully.
Maybe someone else has run into this situation.
At any rate,I certainly appreciate the scheduled task instructions 8)

By default, XP use simple sharing.

We had something similar before where the Security Tab wasn't present, we found that in XP your HDD has to be formatted with NTFS in order to have it, unlike mine FAT32 (where the security tab doesn't show).
So if Technical's suggestion doesn't resolve it, check the format of your HDD.

There is one for showing files they don't want you to see and recommend you don't unclick that option.

I looked and looked in my Windows XP, the missing manual under scheduled tasks and file sharing, etc. What I find looks like the way to schedule a task involves the password scenario. No mention of security setting in the file options that I could find. ???

If you are referring to the original post of this thread I would suggest you look at the posting dates. I posted these instructions back in April of 2004. You're post, which you linked to, is from September 2004, a full five months later. If anything, you should be giving me credit.

Hmmm, I just tried setting this up, and when I tried testing it, I got the Avast initializing window, and then it ends immediatly. If I run it from a CMD prompt, it executes fine. Is there a log somewhere that I can use to determine why it is ending quickly out of the scheduler?

Although this could not be enough, it helps.
For instance, by default, you don't have access to C:\System Volume Information folder, for instance.
The on-demmand schedule is, for sure, a Professional version feature and won't be able to 'replace' it at the same level of effectiveness and effort with the Home one.

The short answer is you can't.
The ashquick.exe scan isn't designed to do what is being done here, so it doesn't display results by default when used as a right click context menu scan. This can be adjusted by checking the Program Settings, Common, 'Show results of Explorer Extension.' This I believe will make no difference to the purpose you are putting ashQuick.exe to.
If the results are important to you then you would have to use the Pro version which can schedule a regular scan that gives options on what to do if an infected file is found and retains scan results so you can check them later. The free version is limited this and a few other areas, hence this work around (the programmers have to eat ;D)

Only using the Home (free) interface and waiting for the end of the scanning.
The reports of scanning are here: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\report
On the Professional version you can do everything you want 8)

I set this up, and when I tried testing it, I got the Avast initializing window, for a split second, and then it ends immediately. As I watch in the scheduler it shows it is running and then ends within seconds. I do not see it running under applications and there is never a result in the data file.
I get the impression that those that are running this successfully are seeing the program load and run. I set it up verbatim, have scheduled other programs in this manner before and all other programs in my scheduler run just fine.

I would guess you haven't set up any drives to scan for it to be over so quickly.
From page one first post.

Or you missed out the quotes around the path to ashQuick.exe or the path is wrong.
Enter the exact text (command) you used with the drive to be scanned (parameters) ?

On the TASK panel in the "Run as:" box enter
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
This should let you execute the scan.

These directions from three years ago are wonderfully clear--thank you. But I have one problem: When I tried to test it, it would not work because "no user accout password was entered." What password am I supposed to enter? I do not use a password when I turn on my computer.
I use Windows XP Home Edition.

There is no requirement to enter a user name and password, certainly not of avast as you will notice in the topic. That is likely to be a restriction of your operating system when you are trying to create this schedule and run it are you doing it from a user account that has administrator privileges or a limited user account ?
Other than that I can't imagine why you would be required to enter a user name and password.
This may be better taken out to its own New Topic in the General forum, to try and keep the length of this topic down and make it easier for those reading it in the future.

I think Caryl's question is perfect for this thread. I had the exact same question and it deals with automatically scheduling a scan which is the topic here.
And I thank you David as I was wondering how to handle this as I have no pw but want to follow the instructions in the first post.

So you shouldn't have a problem in not having a password, I assume you were able to schedule it without a requirement for a user name and password.

Actually no. I followed the directions precisely and when I tested with "run" it didn't. I'm the administrator so I'm not sure what's going on. Yes, I rechecked all the steps 3 times.

I have just returned from three weeks in China and see that there is some followup to my remarks regarding passwords and automatic scans. The reason I did not start a new topic, as suggested, is because I was new to Avast at that time and decided that I would just scan manually. I am continuing to do that and have no problems.

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
Value name: limitblankpassworduse, Type: REG_DWORD, Data: 0 (disabled) 1 (enabled)
Edit the value to (0)

This thread is about the free (Home) version.
ashCmd.exe is present only in the Professional version. If you have Professional version, you can easily modify the task in the Enhanced User Interface so that it doesn't show any warnings.

I am a brand new user, and this is the first thing I looked for once I got the free home version up and running. Terrific work to identify this tidbit of what most of us look for after migrating from some other software. I did a bit of testing using your technique, and I think I have proven that depending on the type of scan you currently have defined via the Simple User Interface > Scan Level option, is the one that runs when you use the scheduler to fire up Ashquick. Now recognize my 'proof' is anecdotal in that I timed how long it took to run the scan on a relatively small dataset, and changing the Scan Level manually between each run. If someone else has a better way to prove it, like have examples of the kind of mal or virus each type of scan would find and could populate a test dataset accordingly and run the scan multiple times to prove they functioned as advertised, would be appreciated.

I don't know what is is you are trying to prove, but it would probably be best in a new topic as this topic is HOWTO: Scheduled Automatic Scans w/ Free Version! not the differences between apples and oranges. The two scan methods (this hack and SUI scans) are entirely different and really can't be compared, this 'instructional' topic is a work around to allow Home users that wish to schedule scans (which can't be done in the SUI) a means of doing so.
As you can see this topic already stretches to 6 pages.

The whole point of this topic is 'for the free edition' to have a work around to the Pro versions scheduled scan function.
I'm sure any password requirement is mentioned at some point in this already long topic. But any password requirement would be your log-on user name password or administrator password if trying to run this work around from a limited user account, but I don't have any practical experience as I have never felt the need to use this work around.

An old thread, I know.
I picked up the tutorial last night on bleeping, set it up and it works.
It didn't seem to make much sense to schedule a scan every night, on the other hand it doesn't make much sense to stay exposed to new virii for several hours after an update.
I don't know if this could be done with the Windows scheduler at the time that this thread was started, but in Vista 64 bit it is not only possible - but for me it worked the first time (-:
Basically do everything listed in the original post, as always there are SLIGHT name changes in a FEW places with this later version of Windows.
In the left panel click on the Task Scheduler Library tab.
Find your scheduled task in the middle panel and right click on it, select properties.
In the properties window that pops up click on the Triggers tab.
Your existing scheduled scan should show in the big panel.
Click on New at the bottom left corner, a New Trigger window should pop up.
In the top drop down list choose "On an event".
In the Settings panel choose Custom, then click Edit Event Filter.
Be sure you are on the Filter tab.
In the Logged drop down list select Anytime.
From Event Level select Information.
Select By Source and in the Event Sources drop down select BOTH Application Popup and avast!
Leave everything else alone on this window, click OK to close.
This should take you back to the Edit trigger window, be sure Enabled is checked in the bottom left corner, then click OK to close.
That should take you back to the Properties window and you should see your new "On an event" trigger in the main panel.
Basically what this does is to set up a scan to run as soon as Avast sends an informational message and the only ones I ever get are "Virus database has been updated".
MY goal is to run a scan as soon as possible after Avast issues an update.
OK, but that is just the triggering of WHEN to run the scan.
You still need to fill in the Actions tab the same way you did for your scheduled scan.
Reminder;
Click on the Actions tab, click on New in the bottom left corner, fill in the window that pops up in the same way that you did for the scheduled run.
e.g. browse to "C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe" (or wherever) and fill in C: D: in the arguments box.
TESTING;
Keep your sound volume at a level where you will hear it, e.g. be sure it isn't muted.
When you hear the DAILY "Virus database has been updated" message look for a new avast scan window.
You will know it is new if only a few files have been scanned.
At some point you might as well delete the (daily, weekly, monthly, etc) scheduled task.

But once the scan is finished, what is the easiest way to check the scan results?

Schedule another task - - to run on completion of the scan.
Windows Task Scheduler is reasonably powerful in this respect.

Not only is it an old topic, it will be redundant come the release of avast version 5.0 (except for those who can't run 5.0), as even the free version will have the ability to run scheduled scans, which was the purpose of this work around.

USE of the Standard Windows Task Scheduler is hardly a "work around".
Any more than the use of CRON jobs would be a "work around" on *nix platforms
These are STANDARD platform tools and there is much to be said for their use.
In fact they are very likely the mechanism that the "pro" version calls (behind the curtain).

Well I don't know what else to call it as avast Home doesn't have any way to schedule a scan, so for those who have avast Home that want to do one, this is a way around the lack of that function in avast Home, a.k.a. a work around.

This scheduling process works even for a full scan ( IF YOU MAKE A CUSTOM FULL SCAN - then set it as your default scan. )
you can do this by going to the Antivirus, scan now, create custom scan section of the free version. When done expand the " more details" option and be sure to check mark the ( make this my default scan box )
after this is done, simply follow the original instructions to schedule the "quickscan"

NOTE: These instructions are for Windows XP and assume Windows is set up to use "single click" to open items. I would assume the steps would be similar for other versions of Windows.)
Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Scheduled Tasks
Click (or double-click) on Add Scheduled Task
In the wizard that appears click Next - a list of programs will appear
Click Browse and navigate to C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4 (or whatever folder in which you installed avast!)
Click (or double-click) on the file ashQuick.exe
On the next screen give the task a name of your choice and choose how often you want it to run and click on Next
On the next screen choose the appropriate scheduling options and click on Next
On the next screen enter the user name and password for the Windows user you want the task to run as, then click on Next
On the next screen check the box for the option "Open advanced properties for this task when I click Finish", and then click Finish
On the next screen, in the "Run" field you will see the path for the ashQuick.exe program. After the closing quote enter a space and type in the path(s) that you want scanned. Multiple paths must be separated by a space and any paths that include a space in the path name must be in quotes. Here are a couple of examples:
"C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe" C: E: - this will scan the entire contents of the C: and E: drives
"C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe" "C:Program Files" E:Downloads - this will scan the contents of the Program Files folder on the C: drive and the Downloads folder on the E: drive, including all subfolders (Note the first path is in quotes due to the space in the folder name "Program Files")
Click OK
In the Scheduled Tasks window, from the menu, click on Advanced and choose "Start Using Task Scheduler"
To test your newly created task, from the Scheduled Tasks window, right-click on the task's icon and choose "Run" from the popup menu. If the scan doesn't begin correctly you'll get an error message. The problem is most likely in the scan path (missing quotes or something like that.)
Close the Scheduled Tasks window

It is redundant avast8 and earlier avast 7 & 6 versions have had scheduling built into the Scan settings.
This is the problem you get when responding to a topic that is nine years old and the last post in it almost four and a half years old.
