getting rid of snap.do
« on: February 17, 2013, 05:41:56 AM »
OK, I've been following the sticky post on how to get rid of Snap.do.
I'm attaching my note pad after running OTL, etc.
Would appreciate any help.
Thanks.

and here's the log from aswMBR.

But I'm wondering if it's really so bad to have the snap.do search engine pop up when I go to www.google.com? I unintalled the snap.do program and I set my IE to open with something other than Snap.do and AOL isn't affected by Snap.do so maybe I should leave well enough alone and just use IE and AOL for my search ISP's

Thanks,
Bob

Not really a good idea to cling to a browser hijacker, read here: http://malwaretips.com/blogs/snap-do-toolbar-removal/

No, it's tenasiously hanging on to Google. Everytime I open Google, it launches something called feed.snap.do and then Snap.do appears.
I went into my registry and deleted every instance I could find of snap.do or feed.snap, etc.
I also changed my settings in google to open with other programs (such as google) and deleted snap.do from the available search engines in google but, alas, it always loads itself right back on.

feed.snap.do is within your feeds

I am not sure how feeds are deleted within Chrome as I have never used it and can find little data on it

The other alternative would be a full uninstall/reinstall

Yes, and it was the easiest. This suggestion should be in the Sticky.
Just uninstall using windows (both the snap.do program and snap.do search engine) then uninstall the Google Chrome, IE, or whatever, and reinstall.
Thanks!

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    Quote
    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

If you use on-line banking then as an added layer of protection install Trusteer Rapport

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide  How did I get infected Keep safe

Quick question: I installed the Hippo Update Checker but when I click on the Icon, nothing happens.
Does that mean the it checked and there are no updates available? Maybe it generates a report when it finds something outdated?

When you click on it, it will examine the system and then open a web page to show any updates with links
It will need to be allowed through the firewall

Hmmm. I've installed it 3 times now. It puts an icon on my desktop but nothing happens when I click it.
If I click the program from Internet Explorer, nothing happens there also.
Maybe one of my antivirus programs is blocking it?
Can I uninstall it and get along without it?
