Title: How to disable Avast's own popup ads?
Post by: theaters on April 24, 2012, 04:18:48 AM
How can the ads for upgrading from free to pro Avast be disabled? They are driving me absolutely stark raving bonkers.

Buying the pro version is not an option.

It's an enormous giant popup, 6" x 4", in the middle of the screen, every few hours, every day. Charming.

I just posted a question about this in a new thread since it's a different question, which may or may not stop the ad popups.

after u re-register ur free copy of avast, yes it will definitely stop the registration notification. its a notification to inform u that ur copy of avast free is about to expire plus an opportunity to inform u of their paid versions.

There are popup windows which appear exactly the same in the lower right hand corner as the Virus definition popups. I just got one 5 minutes ago that told me I could win a Free iPad if I clicked. Avast! Free definitely has popup ads. Now if this doesn't stop I'll simply go back to cracking the Pro version and sharing it with others.

well, it is ur antivirus...avast is a reputable source. of course u can safely click on the popup. these popups happen rarely (about once every 3 months or longer).

i have not seen a free antivirus with no ads...and u should not expect one with ads...it is a platform to promote their paid software.

also the popup is un-intrusive.

since ur so keen to pirate a software, i am reporting u.
such behaviour is totally unacceptable.

I believe that even with the Pro version you would recieve that popup as it is a new promotion to win the Mac air, you should only recieve it once.

If you decide to go back to a cracked version then sooner or later your AV will be shut down anyway as avast is able to track cracked licenses ;D

You don't want much in your free product no ads no matter how infrequent, then you threaten using a cracked pro version, stealing from the company that gives you the free version; that really will get you help should it ever be needed.

You show a real high moral standard NOT, close the door on your way out.

Not to mention, as has been said this isn't an ad as nothing is being sold, but an avast user (free, Pro or AIS), not just avast free, could win a macbook air.

For petes sakes people, this has nothing to do with registering.

I have always been registered, and still is, and there's a giant pop-up in the corner once per day or so, offering me to buy their products.

That's ridiculous.

And you can drop the ridiculous nonsense about how people shouldn't complain about a free product. That pop-up is in nobody's interest, and will only driver the users away from Avast. It's not going to make people buy it. It's just going to drive them away, which in the long run, means the fewer people buy the product.

This is not a once in a while information about a product. It's frequent advertising, and it's not ok.

The occasional request to try either IS or the pro version isn't any big deal. After all,  you're receiving top notch protection
free of charge.
If it's that annoying, you can always downgrade your protection by changing to one of the other free AV programs.
I know that sounds a little harsh but it always rubs me the wrong way when ever someone moans about an occasional popup.
Simply close it and continue if you're not interested.  :)

oggologgo, If your talking about the popup advertisment for avast mobile in the bottom right corner then within that popup there is a checkbox where you can tick it to not show again.

My thanks to fellow users -- more sensitive than I, who were quicker to complain to avast about all of the ads that have been bombarding us lately.

It is disturbing that the replies from avast representatives are so disingenuous.

From a senior member, whatever that credential means:

AntiVirusASeT - Sr. Member
> these popups happen rarely (about once every 3 months or longer).

More like once or twice a day.  I think my approximation is a little closer to reality than yours, and not so disingenuous.

> i have not seen a free antivirus with no ads...and u should not expect one with[out] ads...

No one said they expect a free antivirus "with[out] ads."  Thanks for disingenuously putting words in our mouths.  Avast, however, used to have hardly any ads at all.  So why shouldn't we expect one with hardly any ads at all when avast themselves demonstrated that we CAN expect it?

> also the popup is un-intrusive

When your users say that your ads are intrusive, you're just being argumentative with them when you say "no they're not."  The "Big Lie" works better with the uneducated, but that's not the cross section you'll find trying to maintain their computers and logging onto your forum.

The number of ads popping up has increased precipitously as of a few weeks ago.  That's why you're being called on it lately, and making believe that your new advertising policies aren't part of the problem demonstrates your selfish, defensive posture and unwillingness to listen.

You can generalize that your competitions' software is a "downgrade," but I'll read some objective reviews and switch to someone else's product -- confident that "different" is NOT a downgrade, after which I'll append my own comments about how, "... avast! was great for a couple of years, but now they pester us with pop-up ads, and get arrogant and call the users ungrateful when we complain about it..."

I would recommend that avast hire a public relations firm and LISTEN to their recommendations.  The computer programming entrepreneur behind the keyboard should NOT be allowed to talk to the customers.  You drive me away from using your software even more than the pop-up ads.

If you are not botherd by pop-ups, good for you. But people are different, I myself don't like unnecessary popups generally and definitely not ads. Of principle, I will not defile my environment with ads unless I need to.

Switching AV to, say Windows Live Essentials, is not a downgrade. They are basically equal and WLE constitutes a perfect and also free alternative. One that doesn't spam you too, in their desperation to get you to buy something that you don't actually need.

Same here craigb

When I recently fresh installed version 7.01426, after updating initially,
I saw the Mobile version popup, but quickly saw the check box to not show it
again.

After this one instance, there has been no additional popups, only the standard
offering within the UI summary which in my opinion is more than fair, and not at all
intrusive. Avast! I think is more than reasonable in this regard, and it somewhat baffles me why
a few others are claiming to experience frequent popups. Could they be coming through the
cloud or web extensions for some reason? I personally do not utilize those tools.

All my best!
Jim

It is disturbing that the replies from avast representatives are so disingenuous.

From a senior member, whatever that credential means:

A while back, when I started using Avast 4 on a Win98 system, I quickly discovered a bug where if you ran a scan from the Simple User Interface, after you closed the window, all of your normal file icons disappeared. They would come back after a reboot.

I came here to the forum to see others had posted about this very problem and they were told that it wasn't Avast's fault, it was that 98 was running out resources. People swore up and down that it wasn't technically a bug, just a side effect of Avast running on an old OS.

No, it was a bug.

No one said they expect a free antivirus "with[out] ads."

At the moment you can't even download the free version without manually copying the link. Clicking the download button produces a popup asking you to buy the paid version and the "No thanks" button doesn't work.

Works for me.  I just now went to www.avast.com, selected Downloads and clicked on the Free version.  When the offer came up for the paid versions, I clicked on the "No thanks" button and was redirected to CNet downloads when it can be downloaded.

+1!

I agree, there should be a check box that says, "Don't show this ad again."  Just click that.  I think I might get a non-related AV definition or program update pop-up twice a year, which is nothing considering that Avast has the best free AV protection available and is even better than many paid AV products.

Actually,

I did get one pop-up from Avast offering to upgrade to Avast IS.  I don't think there was an uncheck box for that.  Is this what people are asking about?  There was a check-box to not show a pop-up that said Avast was now available for some mobile device a few months ago.  That doesn't bother me.  However, some might be asking can you disable those pop-ups that promote services in settings, WITHOUT reducing protection?

These ads are not governed by the local avast! client but from the virus definitions/program updates.
They are very conservative on producing ads, but, of course, you can't receive none in the free version.

You can't tell others what is a big deal for them. It was not an "occasional" request. It was daily.

If people don't let Avast know how they feel about their product, then Avast cannot improve it. That includes, letting them know, when something is annoying about it.

Workarounds are not solutions. That the product is free, has no relevance. It's an annoying issue, and if Avast want users to use their free product, and of course they do, otherwise they wouldn't offer it, then they gotta satisfy the users.

I'm bringing this up again, because now it's windows 8, that they are advertising. 2 such ads withing the last hour.

The ads seem to have increased over the past 6 months. It's just random garbage popping up. I can't keep track of the ads and the surveys. During the presidential election Avast kept popping up ads about taking a survey. Today it's something about winning a surface tablet. I know it's free, I expect some advertising, but go back to the old way of advertising, in the Avast control panel. I have had several clients uninstall it because of the ads popping up in the right corner. The ads didn't get them to buy Avast they went to something else. Avast is a great product, the popup ads are very cheesy.

Essentially for the greatest majority they aren't ads, ads try to sell you something don't they, the ones I see tend to be informative. Since I have my pop-ups for updates set to 1 second duration (you can also disable the update notification popup), so I really can't see what the big deal is.

I know everything in that video. I usually, not always, go through all that on clients machines so they don't see  popup surveys, ads, or any other garbage, I never used to have to do all that.

Personally on my machine I disable just the audio portion(I always did that) and change the definition update popup to 10 seconds. I like being informed when the defs are updated.

I also disable for clients and myself the community features and the credit alerts.

I don't find the popup messages informative at all, they're annoying. Dave, if you don't find the popups annoying why do you have them set to 1 second? What's the big deal?
