Is Avast Internet Security incompatible with Spybot?
« on: May 04, 2014, 03:21:02 PM »
I had problems getting Avast to recognize that I had renewed my subscription and had to call in for help.  The rep took control of my machine and found lots of problems, causing me to hire Avast to fix them on the spot (including Windows not updating and Search Protect on the hard drive). She told me I should not have Spybot because it will conflict with Avast.  When she turned me over to a technician to repair the damage, he said it wasn't one of their recommended tools but it was up to me if I wanted to uninstall Spybot.  I want to keep it, as it found the Search Protect hijacker on my other laptop and removed it before I even knew it was a threat.  What is the consensus here?

Thanks!

replace SpyBot with Malwarebytes ....the best extra scanner there is  www.malwarebytes.org

if you check any malware removal help forum, you will see that Malwarebytes is usually the first tool they run   ;)

Follow Pondus's advice. :)
To answer your question, Tea Timer, which is a part of Spybot, has caused some problems
because it blocks changes to your system and required by avast! in order to keep you safe. :)

Thanks to both of you!  I also run Malwarebytes (which the rep said was not in conflict) so will remove Spybot from the other machine and hope to be good to go!

If I remember correctly, isn't "Tea Timer" an  additional UNINSTALL. Make sure you uninstall that module as well.
It's separate from SpyBot S&D is it not? Can't remember for sure. ;D

You can keep SpyBot and get rid of TeaTimer.... It doesn't work the other way.
When you remove Spybot, you also remove TeaTimer.

Ah, wasn't sure however it seemed "teatimer" was the culprit of many conflicts.

TeaTimer is no longer included with SpyBot Search & Destroy 2.x and newer.  However, now SpyBot S&D has an antivirus module.  When I was using SpyBot S&D, I had TeaTimer disabled.  Some while back, I installed SpyBot S&D 2.x on this machine.  It lasted 2 days, and was uninstalled.  I really didn't care for it, as it wasn't all that stable at the time.

It's been quite a few years since I used SpyBot.
Back then it came with TeaTimer  but without an AV. :)
This means the problem is most likely do to having two AV's installed which is never a good idea. :)
