Auto update and Windows 8
« on: November 22, 2012, 05:10:43 PM »
Hello,

Anyone has a suggestion about how to force avast to search for new definitions in windows 8 automatically, everytime I turn on my computer (without making windows 8 restart after you power on it)?

After I installed windows 8, avast stopped to search for new virus definitions when I turn on the computer, due to the fact that windows 8 is doing some kind of hibernation when you turn off it, to speed up the boot time and turn off time.

As during the week I usually uses my laptop like 2 hours in a day, sometimes my virus definitions can be up to 2 days old.... (however the streaming updates seems to be work ok).

Thanks for your time,

Tonanet

Avast should update at 4 hour intervals, so unless you are switching off before the 4 hours is reached it should conduct at least one update check

Hello Essexyboy!

Thanks for the reply! That is exactly the problem, during the week I just use the computer for 1 or 2 hours ... So, sometimes I can have my virus definition up two days old...

Thanks!

The alternative is to force an update when you switch on

Yeah, I will be doing it.. I hope that in the future versions of avast, they find a way to check updates when you log in windows 8, just like the other versions of windows.

Thanks for your time!

There isn't any difference in the auto virus definition updates between the different versions of Windows.
It makes no difference if you're using Windows 8 or XP.

Hello Bob!

Thanks for the reply.

I understand that theres no difference in auto update of avast between the windows versions. What I was trying to explain, is that windows 8 dont do a real shutdown. Because of this, when you turn on the windows 8 computer, avast doesnt consider it a boot, so it will only search for an update after the 4 hours between each update check. And this 4 hours are only considered while the computer is on.

Example: If you update it right now and turn off the computer, and use it for only one hour each day... You will get your virus definition automatically update only in the forth (4th) day (wich will complete the 4 hours).

Thanks!

That all depends on how you've configured your power options. Shutting off, on my systems, shuts off the computer.
Restart does a restart not a sleep. Check your settings:

I have the same problem. Avast does not automatically update in Windows 8.
I have to update Avast manually.

Check and see if the Hybrid Boot option is enabled.  See link

http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-enable-hibernate-in-windows-8/

If it is turn it off and see if avast! 7 will search for defnition updates on boot.   If it does than there is either an issue between avast! 7 auto-updates and "Hybrid Boot" or maybe more configuration changes in Windows 8 Power Settings are necessary to make avast! 7 auto update on boot work with W8 Hybrid Boot

Avast is watching the System Uptime. This is not working well on win8 beacuse the system uptime counter is not reset on shutdown if hybrid boot enabled. I think that watching the System Time is better idea on win8.

YES to the above comment. Avast needs to adjust it's program to run on Windows 8.
I use Avast on Windows 8 laptop and I must manually update.
There is a problem here that needs to be fixed by Avast !!

Could it be that you need to adjust your settings ???
I'm using Windows 8 on a Dell Inspiron laptop and avast! updates automatically usually more than once per day.

Hello Bobo3160 and Nesivos!

Thanks for the tips! I really didnt know that was possible to change these settings in windows 8! I thought that this behavior was by design.

When I changed it in windows 8, Avast starts to auto update again as always did.

Thanks for sharing this info!
