Is Avast Antivirus (free version) time limited?
« on: February 20, 2009, 03:50:41 PM »
Hi.
I've just downloaded and installed Avast Home Edition - the free version.
I am pretty certain that this is freeware that has less features compared to the payed-for version, but still free and some kind of time-limited trial version. Yet, for some reason I got a message saying that my trial license will expire in 60 days. And when I open the About Avast... window it says:

Type: Time Limited
Expiration Date: April 21...
Updates expiration: April 1...

What is that about? Can someone please explain?

Thanks!

Not much to comment really...

http://www.avast.com/eng/home-registration.php

Just visit the above site, register for free and enter the recieved key into About dialog.
After you do that you'll be able to use avast! for 14 months. When it expires you just re-register and enter new key. And you can repeat this 14 months cycle forever.

I had a feeling there was a simple answer to this.
Registered, and all is ok.
THANKS!

Hi and welcome,

Let me add a quick reply to a part of your original post that wasn't really part of your problem, just a side-comment.

If I'm not mistaken, the only security feature (as opposed to convenience features) in the Pro version missing from Home is the script-blocking protection.  And most browsers these days offer some kind of equivalent anyway, either built in or available as an add-on (NoScript for Firefox, for example).

Best,
Mike
