Avast Pro on Windows 8
« on: May 19, 2012, 10:38:15 PM »
I installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview Build 8250 on an old computer. I have not installed Avast Pro yet but was thinking about it. I have not seen much lately on the forum although I did find some old post. So I have a few questions. Is there any major problem that would make me decide NOT to install Avast for now and I should wait? If I have problems does the Avast uninstall utility work on Windows 8? I have read on the web that if you install a third party anti virus like Avast then Windows 8 Defender will turn itself off automatically, should I trust this or have people found it best to turn off Defender manually, and if manual would you turn off in the program and also disable the service or is all this not necessary. I have had avast on XP, Vista, Windows 7 but not on a preview version so I am a little nervous. Thanks sly

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping to hear from someone who has tried it and what they did about Defender. I guess I will go ahead and try it tomorrow and wait and see what other comments I get. Thanks slybo

Hello slybo

I've been using avast! 7 on windows 8 Consumer Preview since the day it was release.

The real-time protection is turned off  in Windows Defender as you can see.
I depend on avast! to keep me safe. :)
I use the free version but version really doesn't enter into this.

I installed Avast Pro 7.0.1426 on Windows 8 CP, no problems with the install. I did this on a old computer I bought from a local computer shop for $75 and spent $100 on 4G of ram for it, so this is not a top of the line machine. It is a Dell OptiPlex GX520, got to be 6 to 10 years old. Windows 8 and Avast are working good. The only Avast problem I have found is when I right click on IE 10 I do not get the options to run in sandbox. In Avast UI under Additional Protection> Browser the option to run in sandbox is grayed out. So I assume IE 10 and Avast Pro are not totally ready for each other, anybody else see this? I know I can go to Additional Protection> Sandbox and try to add it there but figure it would be the same and I do not use that feature much anyway, I can wait till October when the full Windows 8 comes out and Avast has time to get ready for it. Ran a full and boot scan and worked great. Computer seems to run faster than with Windows Defender running. I should also add before the install I turned off Defender in its UI and also went to Services and turned off the Defender service and disabled it. Thanks slybo

Just noticed no activity on script shield, other shields appear ok. Maybe another IE 10 thing?

Looking into the sandbox problem found that NO items were checked under settings for sandbox. Of course including adding it to the right click of internet explorer. So I set everything and when I exit it did not work, went back to setting and found all items Not checked. Anything you check in setting for sandbox are removed when you exit Avast? Anybody else see this and it is because not ready to work with Windows 8 and IE10?? Also how about script shield? Thanks slybo

Thanks bob3160, I am sure by the full release of windows 8 they will get sandbox and script shield working. Other than these two items Avast Pro is working great on windows 8. I think this end things for now. Thanks slybo
