Thanks will first try UI program update for my 32bit win7 system that had the aswTDI.sys BSOD.
-
Just updated to this version and so far everything is working fine. :)
-
Yee baby... Updating.... Thank you pavels :)
-
Updated from UI.So far everything is fine.Thanks.
-
whereas its prior version was no problem for me :D
but if a new version update is not a problem for the good of my computer ;D
thank you avast team ;D
-
Pavel, thank you for the new version!
I just updated here (via the UI) from 1483 to 1489 on Win7 64bit and on Win8 32bit ... and everything runs well :)
-
The update via GUI from .1488 to .1489 worked well.
WebRep in Firefox is now holding the given position but at least on my machine it does not show up in Google search results unless I refresh the search page one or two times.
All the rest seems to be working fine.
-
Working fine...
-
Thanks pavels for the update ;D
When will the Google chrome web rep be fixed?
-
OK, I installed Avast PRO v.1489 in Safemode via the Set-up File (not through the GUI of Version 1483) as I had posted version 1488 was not working on my Win8 64 Bit.
Did a Clean Install.
This new version installed and is running properly.....specifically allowing my PC to start with no "Collecting error information loop"
Needless to say, this has relieved my concerns and makes me quite happy ;D
Thanks again Avast.
Good work ;)
-
update from ui of 1488..all ok
-
Thanks for the update! :)
-
I did a clean install of the latest v8.0.1489.300 of avast! Free Antivirus into my home PC equipped with Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Premium (32-bit). As noted from its Settings > Browser Integration, the security plugin for Google Chrome is shown as "uninstalled" though it has been installed. Is this a bug required of fixing?
A. Chung
-
I did an internal update and it went well, no issues.
-
Hi, EmoHobo
Thank you for your prompt response.
I did have the same problem on upgrading from 8.0.1488 to 8.0.1489.300 through an automatic update. Any idea?
Regards,
A. Chung

I did an UI update from 1483 to 1489. So far everything is working fine.

This is a bug. Avast still hasn't solved this yet? They only solved a issue with Firefox for webrep. For google chrome install the avast! Online Security.
-
Updated via GUI, no problems so far. :)
-
Thank goodness........PHEW! :o Everything is up and running, please try not to give us another nightmare. I'll give this new version a week before I tell all my Aussie pain in the ar$e friends to update the latest version, Man! at least I get to keep my bloody tail in one piece.........Thank you Pavel & PK ;)

Same problem on a XP machine here (don't have webrep installed on my main pc). Only wikipedia shows the green bars in the search results.

Confirmed, same here. (Even a refresh doesn't help on my XP.)
-
Well all working nice and smooth here. A stable build, thank you avast! :)
-
Pushed the upgrade via UI since it had not offered me the upgrade yet. All it's well and running ;D
Thanks Avast!
-
No issues so far. Fingers crossed. Thank you Avast Staff.

Google Chrome and Spotify are going slow in these last updates with Avast! running... :'( :'(
Tested with Windows 8.
Please, check that software.

Just wanted to report WebRep not holding position and showing in a google search in IE 10 on a Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit, and on a windows 8 64 bit. The browser crashing seems to be solved. Saw this reported for other browsers but did not see for IE 10. Just wanted to be sure it was reported. Thanks sly

I am experiencing the same difficulties with WebRep and IE10.
-
I was playing around and found on the windows 7 32 bit I could put WebRep on the left side of the menu bar and it will stay, I was putting it on the right side which it would not stay. Will try this on the other computers. I will include a photo. Hope this helps. slybo
Edit, I should add I did this by moving the menu bar to the line that WebRep was on, does not work in reverse.

My WebRep is still grey out using the latest FF v20.0.1 and I thought Avast has already resolved this issue may I ask what's going on please, MAN! Avast is always having problem with WebRep just doesn't make any sense to me at all :-\
-
No problem for now from 8.0.1483 to 1489, via GUI, on Win XP Home SP3.
WebRep is not activated on my system, as I still don't see the use for it.
Its only purpose is to flag potentially dangerous websites based on avast!'s users reviews. Nothing else...
(It's a bit like trying to compare a Force Field -avast! main core- to a sticky note with a written warning on it ;) )
But thanks avast! Team anyway!
-
Different type of danger though.
Sure, avast! tells you whether the particular website is infected - i.e. containing malicious code/script. The purpose of WebRep was to cover things on "higher levels" - e.g. if the particular e-shop is sending fake goods, charges twice etc.; that's something avast! won't tell you, but the users might.

I see. Thanks for clarifying, Igor. Makes sense from that angle...

updated via GUI. my machine working fine so far :D

But the game Dead Space's still not working.
-
But the game Dead Space's still not working.
That isn't a 'Program' version issue but more to do with virus definitions, which are the same across different program versions.
You need to create your own new topic in the viruses and worms forum and outline your problem in more detail (what happens, error messages or avast alerts, etc.).
-
@ DavidR
The game does not start, there is no message. It is not only the question of virus. The Avast version 8.0.1483.72 after the introduction of amendments:
Fixed issue with ZoneAlarm
Fixed issue with constant CPU frequency
Fixed issue with video players
Fixed issue with Virtual PC
Added some localizations
Something corrected, the game began to work without a problem,
If I uninstall Avast running game. It is the same with the game Hunted.
-
Can you please uncheck "Enable hardware virtualization" in Settings->Troubleshooting? Reboot is required to apply the setting change. Is it Dead Space 1,2 or 3? Can you provide details about OS and CPU.
But the game Dead Space's still not working.

Web shield *still* blocks most pages on any browser - even pages on my exclude list. I have been running Avast with the web shield turned off for several months now, every time there's an update I check to see if the problem is fixed, it never is. Auto-update is not working either. (Windows 7 64-bit SP1.)

No good for me - had to go back to the previous version.
IE10 now takes one and half minutes to load with each search on Google taking 25 seconds. The selected web pages are also slow to respond so it is totally unusable. Disabling the Avast add ons on IE10 gives me the fast response times as expected so it's down to this new version of Avast. I don't feel comfortable with the add ons disabled so I've now had to revert back to 8.0.1488. Ideally, I want to go back to 8.0.1483 but haven't got the setup program anymore (8.0.1483 finally fixed the "Insufficient System Resources" issue when doing a system scan and Web Rep still worked in Google searches).
As reported by other users, 8.0.1488 and 8.0.1489 don't show the Web Rep against Google searches in IE10 like it did in previous versions.
System is Win 7 Home Premium 64bit.

Internet Security version 8 was auto installed @ 3 weeks ago. This morning Avast notified me a program upgrade was available, I let it do the update, and it has reverted back to 7.0.1455. This is on a Windows 7 64 bit system.
why would the program downgrade itself?
how do I correct this?
thanks

Hello, I've just started a new tread about a possible bug with the Virus Alerts message sending here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=123961.msg939605#msg939605
---------------------
My original post:
After setting all the parameters in Settings/Virus Alerts, when I click on Test, Avast! freezes and becomes totally unresponsive. It's impossible to make it stable again, and also trying to reboot via Windows commands is impossible (the system itself freezes).
The only solution is clicking the on/off button of my machine aka turning off the power.
Please, keep in mind that you have to use port 465 and SMTP server in order to reproduce the issue (I used a yahoo account).
I was able to reproduce it on my father's system as well (same OS/security software, different hardware).
Could anyone please confirm (or not) the issue (but be very careful, since the system freeze). Thanks in advance.
Regards

Thanks Pavel. Just finally got around to downloading 1489 today, my computer was running Ubuntu 13.04 and 13.10 Nightly Builds for a while, so I am sorry that I missed out on 8.0 R2 Beta Testing (in the Public Beta Sub-Forum) but as of today: I am back at Windows 8 due to an issue that I am having with my current download of Ubuntu 13.10 Nightly Build, so I am downloading 1489 right now and will see how it goes. :-)

Same here. Problem started with 1488 update. I thought the problem was fixed with 1489, but when I started my laptop up today, Action Center reported that Avast was turned off. Acer V3 771G-9809 running Windows 8 (core edition). No other security programs but Avast and Windows firewall. When I click on "view antivirus options" I get a window where I click on click on " Turn on and update avast! Antivirus", then "Yes, I trust the publisher and want to run this app", but it doesn't fix the problem.

I called tech support, they had me uninstall. then download and install version 8. All was fine until Avast decided to update the program and it once again downgraded to version 7. Tech support claims its a license issue and suggested I call customer service. Customer service claims its a technical support issue. I'm caught between 2 departments blaming each other. Customer service even asked if I wanted to renew my subscription since it will expire in 51 days. I obviously declined.
Anyone here have this anomaly? a solution?
Thanks

Install went fine, however, Software Updater is showing itself as Disabled at the moment, not sure if it is normal for it to be doing that or not, however, as the computer is currently Disconnected from my ISP at the moment, due to hitting my Data Cap while Downloading Ubuntu 13.10 Nightly Builds earlier this month, I used a local Starbucks free WIFI hotspot to Download Build 1489 and post here earlier today, otherwise I would have had to wait until May 25th to get 1489 on to my PC. P.S. Signature Edited to show my New Hardware and Software (I recently Replaced my Apple IPhone 5 with a Samsung Galaxy S4 and installed Avast Mobile Security for Android on it.

1. Download avast! Internet Security: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot

I've been receiving Action Center warnings ever since update 1489, never had this issue ever before.
I've tried all the suggestions written here in the forums about uninstalling and re-installing Internet Security, including one suggestion to use the Avast uninstall tool to uninstall in safe mode! This has lead me to the conclusion that the issue is with the update and my Windows 8 64 bit OS.
Avast says everything is fine but Windows 8 says its not so what I want to know is whether I'm actually still protected or not?
I absolutely refuse to clean install my Windows 8 OS, that is an unacceptable "solution" to a third party software update.
-
I don't think that anyone is ever going to suggest you clean install windows 8.
The action (a.k.a. security) center has not been 100% as long as I can remember, there are occasions when its database gets corrupt. So if avast is saying all is well and is functioning correctly, it probably is.
But to jump start the action center it may be necessary to reinstall avast 8 (not windows) to get the action center to recognise it is working.
-
Unfortunately you have also re-introduced the error message when using PayPal which in previous version 7 erroneously detected a Trojan Horse every time any PayPal button was clicked using IE. This was quickly fixed but its back in version 8 although now as a Malware detected error but still renders PayPal unusable. No error is detected in Google Chrome.

Please could you generate a support package and send it to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming/? Probably something failed during security center registration. As it was mentioned earlier, there is just problem with security center messaging. If avast! says its secured, then it is secured.

I would really like to know when your program stops offering piggibacked google products. I only paid for Avast internet security (4 computers) and don't want to accidentally install anything else through the application which actually is supposed to prevent such installs. I don't really care what company will get the money and if this happens again I will switch back to ESET.
-
I totally agree with Dimulec about piggy backing Google Goo on paid subscriptions! Even if you opt-out by unchecking the pre-checked Google Chrome buttons using manual install (8.0.1489), you will still get a Google folder in C:/Program Files (x86) and several google-updater registry entries also.

You might end up with a few registry entries referencing to a non install of Google Chrome but it will not put any Google folder in C:/Program Files if you have unchecked the chrome offers.

I have upgraded from avast 8.0.1483 to the new version on my windows xp x64 computer and have a couple of problems.
The first issue is with an annoying toolbar which has appeared in Outlook 2003 which has never existed before and keeps multiplying each time I open a new message (see image). I tried uninstalling avast and this toolbar went away but came back when I reinstalled avast. I have tried every way to get rid of it... I have unselected it and deleted it in Outlook but it keeps coming back...
The second issue I have noticed is that in the browser integration settings it says that the internet explorer security plugin is not installed, but when I try to install it I get the following error message (see image). I never had this problem with previous versions of avast.
I hope that you are aware of these issues as I haven't had either of them before....
Thanks

Since I rarely shut-down this PC, Avast auto update just ran today. I am very upset that it also installed Google Chrome without asking for permissions. I do not want additional browsers or any software installed without my knowledge and approval.

In your Update settings, change Program Updates to "notify only", or however it's worded (that's the default setting, too), or even manual if you're reasonably sure you're aware of new program updates as they become available. That way you've got control over the procedure and can opt-out of the Chrome installation (typically offered right after rebooting). For that reason and several others, most of us don't permit program auto-updates.
By all means leave your defs/engine updates left on auto ... if you're set up for streaming updates, some days there can be quite a few of those.

Avast spent money for agreement for the antigen firewall components
It fails like you wouldn't believe.see a website to see outpost blow away avast.
You could study all the matousec tests and enjoy the source code attached. I haven’t read the site very much. But you guys should have extremely good results to begin with
Outpost Security Suite Pro 8.0.4164.639.1856 90 % 11 Excellent GET IT NOW! Ii believe it’s obvious they totally ripped avast off..
Didn’t they give you the source code for the firewall does it say that in your agreement, or did they give you worthless api’s I heard components.
For an agreement like that it had better be equal to outpost right? I am quite pissed that your firewall is so poor when you signed agreement and I was expecting excellent matousec results
http://www.matousec.com/projects/proactive-security-challenge-64/results.php
clearly outpost has a 90 and avast like 33 or something.terrible what that company has done
Customers should get an excellent firewall that matches the outpost rating. By using Avast 8.
i am not try violate the forum rules but put i put in an emergency ticket and nothing has been done and i not received a reply i just want to make sure this gets through it just seems very strange avast i s always very prompt every time. and has that reputation
-
the Outpost firewall technology isn't yet incorporated into Avast 8.0.x
so no idea what you complain about
-

I seem to remember reading in a couple of threads over the last few months that Avast decided against using that technology (Code) and has opted to go with their own.

well if they dont use out use outposttechnology.there sure have a weak firewall....too bad
-
I've updated my Avast Premier to 8.0.1489 version on my Windows 8 Pro (x64) and got trapped in OS crashes with 'BAD_POOL_HEADER' error after a day. Now I've downgraded back to the previous version and still waiting whether its OK or NOT.
-
well if they dont use out use outposttechnology.there sure have a weak firewall....too bad
The problem is more to do with the testing methodology as it is HIPS based only (which as far as I'm aware isn't built into the avast firewall).
The avast firewall isn't meant to run in isolation but as a part of the full suite, Network Shield, Web Shield, etc. etc.
-
My program update is stuck. It's in step one, "saving package...his may take awhile" but it's been an hour and not progressing at all. I closed Avast and reopened, thinking I could try doing the update again but the update download is still showing and in the same place. How do I abort this update to start it again?? I see no 'cancel' option.

sigh ...
we and avast staff know about Matousec's tests ... for years ...
note: asw, alwil, avast ... same company ...

Hi
I have just updated to the new version, and Avast has just gone mad with false positives (I assume). The program keeps blocking scripts(15 in a few seconds) . I use Firefox (x86) and Avast free antivirus on Win7 home prem (x64).
Is this a known issue with the new program?
ps. I haven't used the forum before so please forgive me if all the necessary information is not provided.

Avast's problems with bayandsl seems to be gone for now. No problem with other philippine ISPs(pldt, globe, etc). Problems seems to be with bayandsl servers because other devices connected to bayandsl loses internet connection from time to time.

sigh ...
we and avast staff know about Matousec's tests ... for years ...
note: asw, alwil, avast ... same company ...
Yep sad result. I hope to see avast in top 5 in coming years.

I am having the same issue as Lars!! Every time I try to open an email in msn, aol, etc...., it gives me a "malware" block and does not let me open anything! I had to actually disable Avast! in order to register for this forum as you send an activation link in your email and I could not open it until Avast! was disabled. Please help, as I can not access anything & it didn't start until I installed your newest update, Avast! 8, I believe it was?? I use Firefox also like Lars. Thank you!

There is insufficient information in LarsMo's post to make that determination, but you should monitor this active post related to outlook.com and script shield issues, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=124566.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=124566.0).

When I updated Avast from 8.0.1488 to AVAST 8.0.1489 from within Avast, IE10 stopped working. I had to restore my C:/ partition with an image I had taken this morning. When I tried updating Avast again, I lost IE10 again and had to do another restore to get it back.

running smoothly, but I also noticed a LOT few files scanned in the files system shield over the day. is there something it's not scanning or doing anymore?

I recently decided to use avast premier, and was going to buy a years subscription until I noticed an error in the event log that wont go away, the description for event id 16001 from source AFD cannot be found. Either the component that raises the event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. Ive been though all avast premier and everything is running fine, including thew firewall, the avast firewall driver is installed, no errors are reported from within avast, so I don't know what it is, ive run repair and installed over the top, re installed, updated etc. So unless I can resolve this, I wont be purchasing a subscription.

i restored a backup yesterday and didnt even realise there was a version 8. today i was looking in the avast program from systray and a single line on opening the avast program interface on my pc said not connected with avast! account.. no popups or alarms :(. my avast has been saying its up to date after running both program and definition updates. (includes as i type this and i havent yet installed version 8.) anyway went to the WEBSITE avast interface through the link in program (saying not connected to account), i am an IS paid registered user and it after a few minutes then said connected to account on my pc but not on the web interface. not sure if it was rebooting or logging off and reconnecting, i did both but it now says connected on devices tab on web interface aswell as my program. anyway reason im commenting here, was browsing avast web interface site and it said version 8..well that flagged minialarm bells as when i noticed it said not connected to avast account in my program, kneejerk reaction, i clicked the manual update, both programs and definitions. as mostly always happens, i got a progress and updated successfully but still showed version 7. at first i thought perhaps only new customers get v8 and 'allreadies' just get v7 updates. however still thinking something up decided to visit here, glad i did. so now i think somethings definitely up :( . this after restoring my system yesterday and running several online scanners(not at same time in order of Eset( pulled up 42 threats incl. downloadadmin, babylon a,c,e, messengerplus, ibryte, askc, somotoA,alllyrics several locations over),then Housecall, Norton, Kaspersky then back to Avast Main pc program) as a secondary backup to avast after restore.
my system is win7-64 and my avast showing 7.0.1455 program and 130518-1 definitions. have downloaded version 8 from your site and will install now. just thought id mention this for some feedback. will probably post in another area of this forum too though this is update related.

Your Avast account has nothing to do with your Avast protecting your pc. Open Avast and go to the settings tab. Click on account and click "disconnect". Close it out. No to Myavastacounnt and remove your device that it shows. Do this under details. Close out your browser. Now reopen Avast and go to settings/account and reconnect to your account.

Ive just noticed another error in the event log, An IO operation by the registry failed unrecoverably. The registry could not flush the hive (file):"., these erroprs are something to do with avast, as the y weren't there until I installed avast premier. Please Help. Im willing to let someone remotely connect if it will help anything.
-
Program updates are pushed out slowly via the server to the entire world. Some may get it sooner then others. But by default Avast pop up for the program will not show an alert. You can change that in settings. You can also change Avast to install program updates automatically.

That has nothing to do with Avast. Just Google it.

Thers another error I posted, the description for event id 16001 from source AFD cannot be found. Either the component that raises the event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer, that one is avast, and the IO error accurs at the same time. DEVICE/AFD, DRIVER/AWSTDI, MY system is windows 8 pro 64bit.

to add
as with rest of my post, avast wasnt indicating there was an update and didnt update or tell me about version 8.......auto updates were still providing green box and voice saying (v7) up to date and manual update of both program and definitions still showed v7 as being up to date both yesterday and before restore.............main bit not being the popups but the fact it didnt even update manually but you may have covered that in diff regions get updates at diff times, but were talking yesterday??
and in reply to post, program has always been set to tell me when program update available, as opposed to manual or auto of the 3 settings. id prefer to know its done something.

OK now i am extremely concerned, just installed it and then checked the pdf. did a custom install and there was no insert licence mentioned unlike pdf. so went to www.avast.com not from within program and downloaded. just looked at my downloads folder to scan it and the file names are different. a space has been inserted.
avast_internet_security (2).exe (first download and installed-redirected from within avast pc interface)
avast_internet_security(1).exe (www.avast.com from my web browser)
and yup i downloaded the files multiple times..chrome being 1 reason for when it was avast7 on my pc. The installed from link redirect within program (currently installed) is the one with the space and (2). the one ive just downloaded is from going to the website from my browser..both the download locations looked identical.
*****please this is very important****
edit: havent yet run the new download without the space..waiting on an answer...(probably an update to the install program but ill let you tell me)

Please download a fresh copy of Avast Internet Security. Then download the Avast uninstaller. Be sure show the Avast version you are currently uninstalling and point it to the install directory. Reboot and install the copy of AIS you downloaded.
http://www.avast.com/en-us/internet-security "click on trial download"

Most importantly......................RELAX!

ok thanks Aventador, i'll try.
i) Should I post elsewhere in the forum if it's normal for the files to be different from what appears the same source? Instead of assuming things, an explanation or thoughts would ease it greater.
ii) In the world of the internet, which should be more trusted- a browser downloaded file on a recognisable website address of a commercial program or the within program link of a commercial program if it ever crops up again?
ii) Once I have downloaded the two sources, can i go offline just for the install?
thanks for your assistance, though an explanation helps the relaxation more :)
thinking about it as this is an update thread, might be better i post in main forum under new heading as may lose it if ever need to refer back to

No reason to go offline. That is absurd.

done and used your links. thanks.
the custom install had a licence key insert this time as per the pdf :) SHOULD I SUBMIT the install file of the 'avast' program (i downloaded without the licence insert in the custom setup) or was it an old version or something or have you given me an old version ?! (see why explaining really helps)-i double checked it after i read the pdf by attempting to follow the pdf and reinstalling the '8' id allready installed so i know i didnt make a mistake and miss where it says insert licence file and figured it would be safe as in the forum it said it was ok to install over 7 (so i thought, i need to chk with 8 incase i missed it).
-
Ok. Once you uninstall your current AIS using the Avast Uninstall tool then reboot. Install the trial version of AIS 2013 and after its installed then insert your license key.

update: not good, the program said 2 of my software needed updating-the browser and itunes. well everything appeared fine after update-i was navigating around itunes correctly then it just said couldnt connect as i tried clicking links to go from my library back to the itunes store. i added exceptions to firewall even though i had come from the store in going to my pcs library. as per itunes instructions and it still woouldnt connect ..ive had itunes working fine on my system before all this.also my browser which was running in sandbox started freezing :( . not good but hey, im relaxed :)

Next time i'm getting Google Chrome force install while upgrading Avast, i'm buying a new anti-virus as soon as my license expire... >:(
-
Avast installs google chrome because avast uses it for safezone.

No it doesn't, the safezone browser is based on the chromium browser, it isn't google chrome.

Not sure how good the new version is but virus definition update has burned all my 3G account balance. :-[ Internet costs me much more expensive than the Avast license. The message "connection terminated, retrying..." appears repeatedly. Strongly recommend a "resume download" option in later versions or lots of customer run away.

Great to have an update like this. But I also have to say, the size of the exe also grows significantly with each new update (I was happy with avast 4 around 50mb) . For people with slow internet speeds like me, its really a problem. It would be nice if there is an avast lite version, without the extra stuff like software updater, sandbox and secure browser. By the way, if I didn't notice, is there already a way to install only antivirus and leave off the things I mentioned above ?

A custom install would have given you the option to untick the features not wanted, you can also click to uninstall avast and the following next screen will provide you the option to click "change ".

These other elements aren't the issue; the constant is that the virus database is always going to get larger and since that is a part of the installation file it is going to continue to grow even if new features aren't introduced.
If you download the full virus definitions you will find that this is currently 85.1MB so that takes up the majority of the space in the installation file.
If you do a program update from the avastUI, then this is much smaller as it would be incremental, downloading the changed program files, but won't have to download the full virus definitions database.
-
Hmmm... I've noticed that every (or at least some times) when Avast is updating the definitions automatically, Windows Action Center baloon flashes for split second before the Avast popup.
-
The Outlook toolbar is once again sticky - you can't get rid of it.

Good morning,
Third year wth Avast and it feels like the first year (amazing). Avast continues to dominate the AV industry with its unique and great features, including the remake of Avast! online security... great graphics, great everything!
Thank you guys
a loyal user...love ya!
Keep up the good work. :)

Hi,
I seem to be having some trouble updating (Windows Vista/IE9.0.16), currently have avast 7.0.1474, my computer is telling me to update to Avast 8, which is where the problem showed it self.
When I try to update using the update via Avast, it just says Initializing, please wait... the progress bar never moves, I have left the PC alone for hours in the hope that something will happen, but sadly nothing. Everything is set to Auto-update.
Here is a pic:
Any ideas or Help :'(
-
There is a likelihood that the update servers are busy (given the numbers of users involved 180 million plus), so you could try a manual program up at another time.
Or you could download avast 8.0.1489 and install that, Free AV: - http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe).

Wow, thanks for the quick reply, I have been trying to update for over a week so I thought I would have got through by now :(
I tried the .exe file you suggested, but sadly it said it produced an error, see image:
Thanks for your help with this. :), and appologies to the original Poster for hijacking this thread with my problem.

Are you trying to download and install in one action, if so save it to your system and don't try to download, install/run in one action.
Try a clean reinstall of avast free:
- Download the latest version of avast, 8.0.1489 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.
- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for all versions). - 1. Now uninstall avast! - using add remove programs, if you can't do that (as appears to be the case) start from the next step, reboot.
- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, it will request it be run from safe mode (and will handle the boot into safe mode), first for 7.x if previously installed and then for 8.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.
- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Hi All !!!
I've updated with no apparent issue (I haven't run any program besides Firefox since the update, and I haven't played a video game since updating to version 8, so I have yet to determine if all is truly copacetic). Quick scan was VERY QUICK; I'll do a full scan later tonight, I expect. SO far, so good!
Rant//
(constructive criticisms in bold)
However, I'd like to add my irked voice to dimulec, jtk1015, Igbirt, and AngeliusMefyrxNext with regards to the 'piggybacked Google products'. I 'don't want to accidentally install anything' - I also 'do not want additional browsers or any software installed without my knowledge and approval.' (demi-quotes from dimulec and Igbirt posts) I suggest to Igbirt, AngeliusMefyrxNext and others to set your avast up to notify instead of auto-update, and then to manually update (either thru the update prompt or the UI) when able to notice the unexpected.
Luckily, I do not auto-update, ever. After several notifications, I finally decided to update at a time when I was able to be patient and to pay attention to what I was doing... and glad for that I am! I noticed the checkboxes on the finish page. I don't mind the checkboxes being there, but I'd MUCH PREFER that they were not checked by default! If they were not checked by default, they would not be inadvertently installed by me or others.
My estimation of avast would raise exponentially if it did the watchguarding for me in all cases, including this one. Apparently I have to watchguard a program that I bought to be my watchguard. Pft. I cannot fully express how disappointed I am by what seems to be sneaky cross-promoting behaviour (but I'll try). I find it insulting; especially on a paid product. If I had avast! free, I'd be ok with being advertised at. Perhaps make it so that the boxes are only pre-checked for those with avast! free? (no offense to the free users, but it must be paid for somehow, right?)
Of the various AV companies that I currently have exposure to, I like avast! best overall. However, it seems that various av companies take turns sneaky-cross-promoting (Grrr). I'd most like to see one company rise above the rest. I'd most like to see the awsomeness of avast! reclaim the sense of honour and marketing-integrity that attracted me to it in the first place (It still has the sense of community and technichal-integrity that I have always appreciated). Cross promoting may increase profit up to a point, but when the user-base has grown tired of sidestepping it for so long, the company that doesn't do it will have the product of choice.
I, and possibly others, would likely be willing to pay extra for the product that doesn't sneaky-cross-promote. As an example, I detest commercial interruptions on TV. I stopped watching TV over two decades ago (yes, I did miss out on pop-culture, but I clearly didn't really miss out on much). I either read books or used vhs/dvd instead. Now I also use Netflix + Amazon. I still go to the movies occasionally too. Point being: I am very content to pay extra for commercial-free viewing whenever possible, and I would be content to pay more for the reduction of cross-promoting/commercializing in any/all areas of my life, online and otherwise. I am sure that I am not alone in this. Life is too short to be distracted by unwanted messages/interruptions.
Anyhow... I wish you all a life long enough and healthy enough to do it all, and then some!
Thanks for a great av program for several years, and hopefully for countless years to come!
~ Nom

How could I report a program bug to the developers? I mean, I know how to report a FP but what about a bug?
I've started a thread, here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=123961.0

Hello guys! My current version of Avast is 8.0.1455 Today it showed me that my registration had expired so I got a new license key. The problem is that this key contains more than 18 /i think they are 20-22/ symbols and the box for the key can contain no more than 18 symbols. What should I do? Sorry if this is not the right topic, but I am new here :)

You mentioned you have 8.0.1455 installed - as you can see the title of this thread is 8.0.1489 which you can obtain via the first post in this thread ( use the custom install option for required components install )
What version of avast are you trying to license ?

Hi,thanks for the reply. As I said in my post ive already done this 5 times I ran the uninstall utility in safe mode for all the versions of avast but each time after a few days it goes wrong. Each time I contact technical support I am sent the same reply,I am now using up a significant part of my monthly download allowance reinstalling avast8. Simply reinstalling does not seem to work for me there must be something on my computer that is corrupting your program.I had no problems untill avast8. I will try another clean install if it goes wrong again ill have no option but to try another antivirus program and see if they work Thanks again for your reply

You could try a clean install of vers .1849 and see how it's work.

Add me to the BSOD folks.
Happy Sunday to me.
Just an FYI because I'm seeing a few responses in the forums below as if this is a rare problem or some inferring the BSOD reporters are only whining or running conflicting software or that the user is doing something to blame themselves. I suspect that may not be the case in this instance. Me: Win 7 x64, standard HP general public mass-produced 2-year-old box with nothing fancy installed and all the fat removed from initial setup, 6GB memory on wired internet broadband, no problems and always running wonderful over the lifetime of this box with Avast from day-one.
Until 6am-ish this morning at upgrade/reboot to Avast .1489 anyway. Four hours later I was still trying to get the use of my pc back. Something fought me even trying to uninstall .1489. After upgrade/reboot whatever changed Windows just struggled against every keystroke, to BSOD over and over, took down internet connection, IE software wouldn't open from Taskbar button, network/other pc's fine still, Chrome opens but no internet, refused to let me use old system restore points (from safe mode). Diagnostics run otherwise, no issues anywhere. Eventually it let me uninstall in safemode. Anywho running very late now but at least pc back no time to grab whatever file and drop wish I could give it the day but I need to be far far up the road by now sigh: will revert to .1483 (was where I was before 6am) and as it doesn't seem to be a unique-to-me issue then it will likely be worked out over the next week or so and so I will try updating program again in a few days.
Interesting though was that I haven't seen a BSOD since Windows 98 SE -- ahhh, my old friend.
But where is the *official* site I can download the old .1483 version from safely? Very careful where I go these days, and especially in the next few minutes.

I first started having problems with 8.0.1489 on my desktop when I let AVAST! update to it. I lost the use of IE10. It would partially start up, then just sit there and laugh at me. I had to restore my boot drive to an earlier state with an mage twice before I figured out it was 8.0.1489 that caused the problem. As long as I don't update, IE10 works just fine.
I had assumed the problem was limited to IE10 but when I tried to update to 8.0.1489 on my notebook, which is still using IE9 (I don't use the notebook often, mostly just when traveling), I got the same problem. Since I'm planning on restoring the notebook to the factory state, I need to be able to install the version of AVAST! previous to 8.0.1489. Is that possible? Since this has happened on two completely different computers, I'm reasonably confident the problem is with 8.0.1489!

This update breaks the Unity 3D game engine completely...
http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/172759-Unity-4-0-1f2-and-avast-8-0-1482-quot-getThreadContextfailed-quot-error
It's being overly touchy about what Unity does, particularly involving threads. What change did you make that would do this? You need to revert it ASAP.
Avast is also causing a break in compiled programs.
Did a fresh install of Avast and error happened after about 2 hours. So, not fixed. Just uninstalled Avast again so I can keep working. Going to switch to Norton, but this needs to be fixed, preferably by Avast. Somebody from Unity should contact them.
I have just receive a feedback from Avast Tech support. They don't seem to be doing anything about this problem. Just telling me how to deal with AV exclusion and we already tried this option without success (I will try again soon)... Here is the solution he gave me :
Unity version 4.1.2f1 - only major change made on my computer was todays update of Avast (v8.0.1489). The first time I had gTC error was also after Avast update.
How can I download older builds of Avast?

I still have version 7 installed because I don't want to downgrade to version 8 and lose the sandbox function. :(
At every startup I get a misleading popup message that urge me to install new version 7.0.1489, yes that is what it says. I was almost tricked into installing but as soon as I realized it was installing version 8 I stopped the installation promptly. Are you guys at Avast trying to disguise version 8 as an ordinary version 7 program update? :o

You won't lose this function with V8.

I have the PaleMoon browser (based on Firefox). When I look in Browser Integration PaleMoon is not listed. Does Avast not recognize it? If not, why?
Sincerely, Libra

Conflict with the HP Security Manager with an HP ProBook 4530 / Win 7. (there is a thread with another user, wjmkoopman, experienced the same issue)
After upgrading from Avast 8.0.1483 to .1489, the laptop displays the login error, "User does not exist" when attempting to login.
Safe mode allowed successful login. Unistalled Avast 8.0.1489. Rebooted and successfully logged into Normal Mode / reinstalled from the Avast website. Rebooted into Normal Mode and the problem immediately returned.
Tried playing around with the HP Security Manger without success. I did not uninstall it. Avast .1489 is clearly the issue here.
TEMPORARY SOLUTION: Did a Windows Restore back to a day or so before the Avast Upgrade, which restored Avast to v8.0.1483. Will now wait until Avast publishes a solution, assuming one comes.
If anyone has insight on a resolution for this issue, I'd love to hear it.

Try disabling the hp security manager in misconfig and services that would fix the issue

See "can I turn off AVAST update, my CPU is at 100%" entry....
Outside of a potential UPDATE issue, things seem to be hunky-dory. ;)
-
Well ..........
My settings have always been for "ASK" on program updates.
Why did I find myself presented with a dialog box demanding I restart my machine to complete the update to this latest version? ( and yes, the setting is still clearly set to "ASK". )
Why have I had forced upon me all the Avast features I had removed from the system?
Why do scheduled scans run at random intervals?
Why did I get another instance of Chrome ?
I think Avast is trying to be too clever, way too much garbage and additional features being added.
-
I just tried installing this newest version. Nothing like a good old reboot loop with this. Running a Windows 7 Pro Ultimate 64-bit version. Hope you can figure this out, because I've been very happy with Avast until this.
-
Yeah, good old restart loop here too.
"windows has encountered a critical error and will restart in one minute"
And yes, it's avast.

I'm still using ver.7.0.1474 and every time I boot up my laptop I get the big messages in the bottom right side to upgrade to ver.8 by now from what I can see the new version is very stable so I’m ready to do the upgrade. Is there a place where I can go to get upgrade instructions? I’m not a pc expert and I want to avoid problems that I usually run into every time I make changes to my pc.

Right at the beginning of this thread. Or just click the prompts to upgrade.

Hi,
Regarding my earlier post about an endless reboot loop with this version of Avast! Free, here are some details:
- Windows 7 Ultimate x64
- New Windows installation to an empty 120GB SSD, only Windows Updates installed (and Mozilla Firefox)
- Obviously, no previous version or security software
- According to ntbtlog.txt the last driver to load before reboot is mrxsmb20.sys
- Have had to use system restore to be able to boot to Windows
Let me know if you need some additional information.
-
The day it became available, the internal update engine loaded it. Working great, and I like the interface. Kool... ;D

There is no such 100% effective antivirus program because everyday 50000 of viruses come out and with this fact every AV is just statistically effective so you should be exercising self caution that means your best side by buddy to avast should be your brian. ;D
My numbers are bit low...the number is now 100 000 + viruses everyday

A silly question to ask on the Avast forum.
If we didn't think that avast! is better than another product, we wouldn't be using it. :)

A silly question to ask on the Avast forum.
If we didn't think that avast! is better than another product, we wouldn't be using it. :)
Well it isn't so silly actually, the fair answer to that will be: both are strong. You could use avast because is lighter than other one. As for detection: 100% doesn't exist. The 3rd line of defense is the user(antivirus, firewall, user :) ).
-
is avast 8 free antivirus protection and detection is rate is high than any other antivirus 8)
There is no antivirus that has 100% detection or top notch AV product because of 100000 + viruses everyday...Every AV is just statistically effective..but there are even crappy Antiviruses out there that claim to detect everything like netprotecter and quickheal but in reality they are the worst AV's ::)
I have been using and recommending avast to my clients for like 2 years and none have been unintentionally infected yet. ;)
Your best antivirus is your brian that is self caution on the internet and when exchanging USB sticks.. and by the way some of the improvements that are coming along in some months is surely going to be effective.
Anyway for your curiosity:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=127472.msg953929#msg953929
Still have a doubt ;D
But remember you can still get infected with viruses if you are going to mess with your computer and dont use "self caution" its always handy to have layered security. eg: Avast free + COMODO firewall + Malwarebytes free. ;D
Detection rates change everyday..what's important how well avast works and protects you. :)
If it works for you,its best for you.
Avast is almost near to have 200 million users around the world, cant go wrong with that big user base :D

It's been a few months now. When will avast release a new program update?
When one is ready. Certainly before Windows 8.1 is officially released.
Beta is currently available.

Beta's should only be used by those that are willing to accept the dangers that go along with trying a beta version of any program.

There is no time schedule so you'll just have to monitor the forum for when it might be released.
Note that windows 8.1 is essentially beta also, so even is avast release a version that is compatible with this release it doesn't mean that something wont be broken on the next windows 8.1 update.
