Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender
« on: January 14, 2012, 02:46:14 PM »
I have been getting  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender" messages in Outlool2010 Inbox & Junkmail since Thursday 12 Jan 12
The mail is returned from various addresses similar to example below
None of the email addresses are in my address book or contact list
<info(at)e-rauchershop.de>: connect to mail.e-rauchershop.de[178.254.0.106]:25:
    Connection refused
Before downloading mail today I restored my Win 7 system to 8 Jan 12 but still get unwanted "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender" messages
I use Win7x32 professional, Outlook 2010 and Avast Antivirus

 Can you advise additional action
Thank you

It is a common spammer tactic and it has worked in your case as you have opened it and that could have resulted in more serious issues.

So your actions aren't going to stop these speculative or bounced emails. One likely scenario is that your email address is already on a spam list and those email addresses aren't just used to send spam too, but they are used in the from email address (easily faked). Another scenario is that someone that you have communicated with, friend, colleague, etc. has an infected system and their email address book is harvested for email addresses to send spam to and to use as the from address.

The problem is that dumb email servers and spam filters bounce the email back to the from/reply to email address without thought that this might not be who sent it.

I get these on occasion and I know I haven't sent them (so I know they weren't likely to be undelivered), my anti-spam invariably picks them up or one of my filters will flag it otherwise the mark one eyeball picks them up and they are flagged for deletion. Then my email program is called to download the remainder of legit emails.

####
What to do, set the avast Mail Shield to High heuristics as that will detect if you are actually sending out multiple emails in a short time frame (generally spam). This could also be an early indication that you may have a hidden/undetected spambot no your system. In most cases you aren't sending out spam, but it is the scenarios outlined above and their bounced email being send back to the from address.

Hi semajCA,

Make that clickable phishing mail address non click through by just writing AT for @
info AT e-rauchershop dot de.
It is a PayPal phishing scheme on 1blu dot de. Site has been hacked and that links to SPAM resources,

Me, I'm mega suspicious of such sites, who knows if they aren't black hats or have been pwned too and the email addresses, etc. aren't harvested.

The same with sites that purport to test the strength of your passwords, not that anyone would be silly enough to input live (or soon to be) passwords into the site, would they.

Hi YoKenny,

Report it then, and you know where to post that  8)
All I can think of that it could be a form of luring.
Well I don´t know if it was intentionally done or not.
Again I do not know what are the rules set out for lurin here.
Should be a bit similar as for trolling.
One rule goes `do not feed the troll or lurer´, do not react!
