Firewall useless when using Adblock Plus ?!
« on: January 29, 2013, 09:10:28 AM »
Hi,

As I was trying to implement the whitelist mode (have all apps blocked by default, especially new ones :) ), I made a few tests that nearly drove me crazy...
Basically, no matter what configurations, I simply could not make the whole thing to work : control which apps can connect and which cannot.

After one or 2 hours, I finally realized that the whole thing is only depending on whether Adblock Plus is running and authorized or not !!

To sum up:
Adblock Plus deactivated
1- White list mode, Allow All Apps *not* ticked, general "core" apps ticked, Amazon app ticked => Amazon is working
2- White list mode, Allow All Apps *not* ticked, general "core" apps ticked, Amazon app *not* ticked => Amazon is *not* working

Adblock Plus activated
1- White list mode, Allow All Apps *not* ticked, general "core" apps ticked, Adblock Plus ticked, Amazon app ticked => Amazon is working
2- White list mode, Allow All Apps *not* ticked, general "core" apps ticked, Adblock Plus ticked, Amazon app *not* ticked => Amazon is working

3- White list mode, Allow All Apps *not* ticked, general "core" apps ticked, Adblock Plus *not* ticked, Amazon app ticked => Amazon is *not* working
4- White list mode, Allow All Apps *not* ticked, general "core" apps ticked, Adblock Plus *not* ticked, Amazon app *not* ticked => Amazon is *not* working

It seems Adblock Plus daemon is working more as a "proxy" instead of a "firewall"... and this proxy is placed before the Avast firewall making it useless...

I did not dig any much further, but it seems the behavior is analog when using the Black list mode...

Until further notice, you have to make a choice : use a Firewall (security) or a use Adblock plus (user experience)... Bye bye Adblock...

Many thanks for your help, Adrien

Hi,

I did NOT do any research about how Adblock works by myself, but as far as I know, it indeed works as a system-wide proxy (and not a firewall).

Hi,

Not sure I understand your point...
Do you confirm the firewall is inoperative when using Adblock Plus ?
In such case, is there anything that could be done (e.g. place the firewall "before" the Ad blocker ) ?

Thanks a lot, Adrien

Hi,

Reinhard should answer that, but I'm not sure the order can be changed. I was merely talking about the deamon working as a proxy, which is correct afaik.
