Hi all,
We're glad to introduce new major version of the avast! Free Mobile Security. There wasn't a program update since April for a reason. We've worked hard to prepare bunch of new features. The most important one is the avast! Anti-Theft web portal integrated into the avast! Account which allows remote control of your device from a web browser. There are also other improvements like the Network Meter, avast! SiteCorrect, Real-time protection of executed apps, widget, slightly optimized UI for tablets and many more.
We are kicking off a public beta here. As we don't plan to put the beta product on the Google Play store, you'll have to watch this thread for updates. The avast! Mobile Security and avast! Anti-Theft APKs will be pinned here and are intended to be installed manually to your devices. The definitions database will be of course updated automatically.
New Features
- avast! Anti-Theft web portal integrated into the avast! Account
- Network Meter
- avast! widget
- Optimized UI for tablets
- Real-time protection (on-exec scanning) of apps
- Custom rules and log in the firewall
- The shield control UI to fine-tune on-access security setup
- avast! SiteCorrect for the Web Shield
- Scanning of incoming messages
- SMS/Call filter wildcards
- Greyscale notification icon (yay!)

Thanks,

To update your current AMS/AT installation(s) to new betas:
1) Go to your device Settings into Applications (or a similar name) and check "Unknown sources" checkbox.
2) Put the APK files to your device (either by downloading them directly or putting them to your SD card using your computer).
3) Click on the APK file(s), an installation dialog should appear. Accept the installation dialog to install the apps.
(Or instead of 2+3 you can use "adb install -r <apk filename>" directly from your computer if you have USB debugging enabled.)
To install a fresh new copy of AMS 2.0 (and AT of course):
0) Uninstall previous copies of AMS and/or AT. And follow the update guide above.
(Or instead of 2+3 you can use "adb install <apk filename>" directly from your computer if you have USB debugging enabled.)
NOTE: Do not use the Anti-Theft installation wizard since it won't download the beta Anti-Theft package.

Thank you for your great work. :)
I am testing it right now :D

Just updated and configured to the latest beta :)

Hello -
Thanks for the opportunity to run the beta software! I do have one concern/question however:
Is the expected behavior that the screen stays on when the phone has been remotely locked from the web portal?
I gave it about 5 minutes to turn off and it did not - this would drain the battery very quickly.
Phone is a HTC Rezound, running ICS

-
Hey guys,
I am running a Cyanogen Mod 10 preview build of Jelly Bean 4.1.1 for the HTC One X (International, Quadcore). I have experienced a massive battery drain - this MIGHT not be directly related to your app but still the battery stats show strange behaviour of avast.
Just look at this: i.imgur.com/hJsc4.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/hJsc4.jpg)
edit: on the HTC One X with ICS there were no issues so far.

Hi Aeefire,
this is really weird. Can you tell us what exactly have you enabled and tried in AMS? You can also try disabling Network Meter (in the Settings), which is the only thing that does something periodically and could possibly cause this, although we haven't had any problems with it.

-
how do i uninstall this anti theft beta ? i installed from sd card do i re run the apk to uninstall?
-
Just undo it in device administrators and uninstall via application manager; if there is no application named antitheft, try milky way.
-
Installed perfectly on aokp milestone 6 with Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
I'll try later on CyanogenMod at the same phone.
All features seems to be translated and working here.

Issue seems to got solved either by your update or by the newer version of the customROM. However, it's gone.
-
Hi..
I have been using your last final version... and thought to try this one since this is much better considering it's options...
I tried with Anti theft and it went well too.. What I want to ask is, how to install it root based so it won't get wiped out in case of hard reset or something.. In your earlier version, Mobile security app does the task to install it root based but while installing through anti theft only, there is no such options.
Would like to know a way ..
Thanks.
-
Nice. Any chance of adding an option to access the cameras on the phone so one can view where the phone is and take pictures?
-
Tested in CyanogenMod.
Working as it should.
I've found no issues in the web portal.
Congratulations. Update smoothly.
-
Some strings continue only in English :-X
For instance, the new grayscale icon.
I never expected you would change the icon ;D ;D
After all the "fight" from changing the blue "a" to the orange one. Now we have also gray one :)
Well, the orange is more beautiful than the gray imho 8)
-
Well, the greyscale one is the Android way to do it. But you are free to pick the one you like the best :)

GSM Galaxy Nexus running CM10 (Jelly Bean 4.1.1) with Anti-Theft v2.0.2553 installed as root (in /system/app/.)
Under "Advanced Settings" -> "Lock text, GPS, Wipe" the "Automatically enable GPS" option is off and is disabled (grayed out), so I can't turn it on. According to the description this should be on by default for rooted installations, but https://my.avast.com lists "Automatically Enable GPS: No" Is this a bug? Can I change this setting either on the phone of via web?
-
There is not a 10 version of CyanogenMod as far I can see...

Happens the same for me, i.e., the "no" set into the portal settings.
-
I have tried to install the beta but as it installs as a zip file and not an exe file, I am not sure how to install.

It's still in very "beta" stages, where nightlies are not yet public. However, people can compile directly from CM's source. The ROM I am running is here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771534).

Thanks Chahk... I'll wait a little before I mess with my phone at the moment.

Nice update:)
But how can I connect my phont to Avast account? I enter my email and avast password but of course it doesnt work.
-
If you have a working avast! Account, it should work. What's the error message you are getting?
Filip
-
Error message: "The e-mail or password you have entered is invalid"
Well I do have an an avast account obviously:) If its the same account to the website which i believe it is.
-
Should be your email and password you use here https://my.avast.com/ . It's weird it doesn't work :( Could you, just to be sure, try again?
Filip
-
I could but had tried six times:)
Edit: Seems like i didnt have an account at all at my.avast.com... sure I registered but wellwell:P
-
Dunno about that. But I take it it's working now :)
Filip
-
It is working just perfect now hehe.
-
Just a note..
When choosing reboot function it reboots just finebut it says "Command timed out" in "Commands" section.
-
Upgraded but don't have any root options
//edit
Realised the beta isn't root enabled. Rolled back.
Looking forward to customisable notification icons

If you install the market released version, setup root and everything, and then install the betas over it you can have your cake and eat it to. At least that's how I did it.
-
Started to manually install the Beta on my Kindle Fire. Received the following message upon attempting to register as new user:
"Could not connect to Google Cloud to Device Messaging (Could not connect to Google Cloud to Device Messaging. Please make sure that your Google account is set up correctly.) Please make sure that your Google account is set up correctly."
When Connect is selected, the message displays for five seconds then disappears.

When you enter your credentials into the avast account section of AMS is it by any chance sent via an https connection or is it sent via an normal http connection?

everything is transferred by https

I am testing current beta from now, I'm user of aMS and AT from time of paid version of AntiTheft. Hi, reinhardholzner.
I have question for now. Web control interface is good option but will be there such application for remote control from another Android phone or tablet with similar capabilities? Thanks
-
Why have the programers left the opinion of having grayscale as an option for the icon in AMS? Was it due to user demand or does it have any other benefit apart from it being gray?
-
Will be there such application for remote control from another Android phone or tablet with similar capabilities? Thanks
Do you mean a different remote control than the web portal? Because another Android phone or tablet connected to internet works the same as a computer as you know.

Greyscale notification icons are according to Android design guidelines (so they would fit with other/system icons). There is no other difference.

Thanks Filip.

Cyanogenmod 10 is in early stages of development, but its still a pretty solid build, good enough to be used as a daily driver. This new beat is not doing too well on it. Phone only charged 35% in 3 hours because something was locking the cpu at the full 1.2ghz, turns out it was this beta app. After I disables it, all was fine. I will go back to the old avast which is on the play store till to see if that works properly on Jellybean, otherwise i will hold off till this is compatible with JB.

Yes, different, because in case of theft you need speed. Prepared and set application is quicker and easier than logging into web.

Good. Like the idea to have a local Windows application that allow remote control.

Being the OCD person that I am, anychance we can get the notification area to match the standard layout of Jellybean?

Your screenshot display orange Avast logo.
1) Did your systray notification Avast logo is in gray?
P.S. Did its a "problem or bug" to have Avast systray notification logo in gray, and have Avast notification not in gray like in the screnshot?

Not sure what you are asking, but what I am referring to is that in the notification menu, that you pull down from the top of the screen, the avast entry does not follow the standard of the other apps. You can see that the other three apps all have a large icon to the left that is separate from their text information on the right. I would like to see the avast notification have a larger version of the icon in the separate blue box like the others, with the text on the right. Don't think it's a bug, just something that has been implemented yet. And I imagine you'd only see it this way if you are using a Jellybean based ROM.
-
Hi all!!!
I would known if the new version of avast! Mobile Security can run the firewall on devices that not support netfilter??
I have a Samsung Galaxy Y DUOS GT-S6102 and avast! can't run the firewall because my android version (2.3.6 S6102XXLG2) doesn't support netfilter, and I don't want to "install" a custom firmware because I don't like the only one existance and not support either netfilter.
-
Hi,
no and this will most probably (99%) never be possible.
Filip

oh... :-\ ok tank you!!! :D

On my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.01 Android 3.2, Avast! Mobile Security 2 Beta 1, i have selected gray logo inside Avast parameter. It display like my screenshot inside the systray section, but when i go to the menu like your screenshot, the logo is orange.
P.S. Did Android 4.x and better, have that systray section like inside my sceenshot ?
See my screenshot.

Just updated it on my HTC EVO 3D running ICS 4.0.3. So far so good, I really like to see all new features on board :)
-
I've found no issues in the web portal.
Web portal is not working here :-[ avast! Mobile Security 2 and Anti-Theft are installed on phone and working correctly.
-
Hi,
hmm, that's weird. Are you sure you installed Anti-Theft directly from the .apk and not through the AMS installation wizard?
Filip
-

Filip
Yes, Filip. I have completely removed non Beta Anti-Theft and AMS, and installed both files from .apk Both apps fully functional on phone and AMS shows Anti-Theft is OK.
I am using stock HTC Android 4.0.3, no root or other stuff.
-
Hmm, weird, just tried it again and it works for me. Could you try to uninstall Anti-Theft and leave just AMS on? That's what I just tried.
Filip

Worked like charm :) Uninstalled Anti-Theft, left AMS only, and installed Anti-Theft again after some time. All commands and all other stuff fro Web Interface now works.

Although it's weird, I'm glad it's working :)

Maybe restart of phone was needed in my case after removing non BETA versions, and only after it was ready to install BETA's from apk files properly ;D

Hi,
i have installed both the anti virus and anti theft onto my Galaxy Ace running Gingerbread 2.3.3. When I go to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications, I can see "avast! Anti-Theft" in the list,
should this not be hidden as I thought that is what stealth mode was for.
Thanks for any help and ideas on this.

How long does the beta phase going?
Is there any ETA like August, September, 2012, 2013? :-)

no, not really. When it's done, it's done :)

OK it's to long to wait ;-), so i install the beta right now !
-
I just installed Beta2 for the first time and before it begins I' ve found a small bug:
In the installation process you can create a new Avast Account needed for using it. I have a DesireZ cell with Android 4.0.4 and more important the DesireZ has a hardware keyboard. So when using this keyboard in landscape mode the second password field is missing. You can not confirm the password.
To come around this bug I had to close the keyboard and go back to normal mode using the touchscreen keyboard. Now the second field is visible.
The bug is reproducable.
Keep on good work!

Hi MikeRD03,
thanks for the report, it'll be fixed in some future release (not necessarily the next one).

I noticed that the mobile security 2 beta is using significantly more memory than the previous one. Any thoughts or ideas on how to reduce memory usage?
-
Hi,
can you give us some numbers?
Filip
-
Hi,
can you give us some numbers?
Filip
Yes. When I start up my task manager, I see that the new version of vast runs around 40 to 60 MB. The previous version ranges between 4 to 15 MB max..
-
excellent version I must say cudos to you all :)
done a few tests , and everything (current features) appear to be working well..
few questions regarding the SMS commands and future features as such..
- are there any amendments to the SMS commands?.. like cc all not reporting sent messages , only received messages?
- will there be the ability to have these SMS messages sent to the Portal rather then through SMS to phone in future
- ability to use optionally wifi/true GPS for location services
- other such features..camera's, mic recording etc..?
in my tests , this version's location settings were a bit broad.. old version 5-10 meters in most instances , this one 50-2000M .. 50 being data & 2000 wifi assumably.
keep up the great work !!!
-

Hi,
if you won't access it for a while, I'm sure it will go down. Also note that Android OS tries to keep the RAM occupied as much as possible to speed up the responsivity of the system. Even though we try to keep the memory consumption to minimum, it just grows while we add new features, nothing you can do about that. System then tries to keep everything up and running even while you don't use the features. When the memory is needed, it will get stopped to free up some memory for other apps.
Filip
-
Hi,
After having some other problems with connecting my device to my Avast! account (these was sorted out yesterday by the Avast! team) I could finally load the latest version of Avast! Mobile Security (beta).
Since I prior to my installation saw this post about memory consumption I monitored this carefully.
I must say that the memory usage in total (for both AMS & AT) only increased by ~0,23MB:
- AMS lowered the memory usage by 0,41 MB
- AT increased by 0,64 MB
So far I haven't seen any problems with the new SW (using SE Experia Arc S).

Try the beta but has to turn back to LBE due to the missing privacy protection.

So from my understanding, this beta will eventually replace Avast Mobile Security (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.avast.android.mobilesecurity) on Google Play?
Why are there two different apks - one for avast! Mobile Security and one for avast! Anti-Theft? At the moment, both of these features exist in the one product available on Google Play. When these come out of beta will they be available on Google Play as separate products or combined into one?
Sorry, but I'm just trying to understand if this is an entirely new product or a replacement for the current one.
Thanks. :)

The only available program is and will be AMS.
The AntiTheft is downloaded within AMS and will be downloaded as a disguised name (and installed as this disguised name).
Right now, for the beta, you have the Anti-Theft file for download.
Well, if I'm wrong, hope someone from avast! team correct me.

Trying to update the root installation of Anti-Theft beta from version 2.0.2553 to the latest one 2.0.2571 is failing. The app goes through downloading the update, but upon restarting the phone the version has not changed. Looking at the logcat reveals the following:
I/PackageManager( 318): /system/app/com.avast.android.antitheft.apk changed; collecting certs
D/AndroidRuntime( 3413):
D/AndroidRuntime( 3413): >>>>>> AndroidRuntime START com.android.internal.os.RuntimeInit <<<<<<
D/AndroidRuntime( 3413): CheckJNI is OFF
W/PackageManager( 318): Application package com.avast.android.antitheft already installed. Skipping duplicate.
I only see the new Mobile Security (https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=AVAST+Software) on the Play Store. I'd like to install only the Anti-Theft stand-alone module. Where can I download the latest version so that I can push it to /system/app/ manually?
-
Hi,
you won't. You will have to install Mobile Security through which you can install Anti-Theft using the installation wizard (having a custom name etc). Then you can uninstall AMS.
Filip
-
Hi,
please, what is or does "PIN recovery" ?
Greetings U.P.
-
Hi,
in case you forgot your PIN or the app just doesn't accept it, you can request a recovery PIN to be sent to a number you specified earlier in app settings. Such PIN will work for approximately 30 minutes so you can access the app and change the actual PIN.
Filip

Hi Guys,
Just updated the whole app and tried stuff out! Seems amazing! The webinterface is great and it works really smooth! Great job guys!!!! ANd this all for free! No app before had all these functions combined ánd offered it for free!!!
Anyway, enough praise, let's get back to business.
The Anti-Theft function works just fine....only if the phone is online! If it is, for instance, in flightmode, all the connections alre cut and the phone is unreachable by Avast (not by SMS command nor the webinterface). So this would make the Anti-Theft function quite useless so to say...
Is the above right or are there other possibilities to still remote control/secure your phone?
If not, the "thief" will be able to completely remove and disable the security without you being able to intervene.... :S
Personally, the first things I would find/stole a phone is to set the phone in flightmode, connect it to A/C power, remove battery, remove SIM, replace battery.
Next, I would be possible to do whatever I want!
Any comments to these possible security risks are welcome. would like to hear the opinion of the professionals ;)
-
Hi,
well, sure, if the thief forever disconnects the device "from the world" forever then there is nothing you (or we) can do. If he inserts a new SIM then SMS is sent to your friend number and if he connects it to the Internet you can reach it via the web portal.
Filip

Congratulation Avast Team for this great update. I have been using AMS after trying several other antivirus and anti theft APKs. One thing I solely missed in AMS is the ability to track the phone through Web browser. It's great that you have finally listened to the users opinions and included this great feature.
Now I have a question: How do I use the web browser to locate my mobile remotely? I am sorry that I couldn't be able to figure it out like i did very easitly in Lookout anti theft app.
-
Hi,
if you register via one of the apps, you will get an email with all the info you need. If you updated your old installation, you will find the registration in Settings - avast! Account section.

I have an ASUS Transformer tf700t, running the stock ICS 4.0.3. When using the latest Google Chrome, when Shield Control -> Web Shield is turned on, Whenever I try to enter a URL then hit GO, or even after specifying a website with a bookmark, Chrome instantly quits/crashes.
I am running Application version : 2.0.2750.
Any fixes for this?
Update: I cleared all the user-related application data for Chrome, it works fine now without crashing.
-
Hi,
yeah, if Chrome was crashing then it's most probably Chrome's fault, not ours (if there would be something wrong with the Web Shield, it would most probably be avast! crashing).
Filip

Hi,
Is there a possibility to add a feature that could stop the theif from turning off the device?
Something like;
Anti Theft Settings Menu------> Phone OFF Enable/Disable (Enable will not allow the phone to be powered off, where as disable would allow it to be powered off)
Regards,
-
Hi,
they can still remove the battery to turn off the device.
Filip

Thanks for the rep Filip.
I have Xperia-S, pulling out battery is not an option
Regards,
Jeet
-
Really, how come? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qjy1AaMxEWk
Filip

The battery is concealed and tighten with screws. One would have to go through the hassle of opening the back cover screws then etc etc, to remove the battery.
Regards,
Jeet.
-
But the thief can still do it if he wants to, right?
Filip
-
When will this version be released on Google Play?

Thank you Filip but I'm talking about the version of mobile security that is based on avast 8 (avast! Mobile Security 2 is based on avast 7 - They have the same GUI).
