Voice on avast
« on: May 15, 2010, 08:34:10 AM »
I'm sorry if this is not the right forum  ;D , but I'm new to this so just bear with me. The new avast 5 has a female voice saying "Your virus database has been updated". Is it possible to change it back into a MAN's voice? My computer is MALE, thank you very much!  >:(

Yes, your computer may be male but the program is considered female  ::)

I think somebody's significant other insisted upon this tweak. No good to hear your partner being talked to in the other room by a member of the opposite sex.

I remember a bit back when I first heard that Avast fella announcing the update. It shocked me. I'd been using (still do) a unit that had no sound card, so I had used Avast for a few years before I added another unit to my system and I sure was shocked when a voice started talking to me at my work station, "Avast has kindly updated. Now get back to work and stop listening to my melodious voice."

Manually changes into the avast sounds will (as far I know) be reverted if you repair or upgrade your program.
Am I wrong?

The sound files indeed do have the "no-overwrite flag", so if you replace them with your own, the avast updater won't touch them...

  • If at first you don’t succeed; call it version 1.0

Crow dog, something that might cause this is a shortage of resource. CPU being used by something else at the time the update is being announced.
What might cause that is a shortage of general performance (eg, old computer; not much RAM) or a software confliction.

Did you have another AV installed prior to Avast, and how was it removed?
Any other security software running?
What are the system specs?
Windows 10,Windows Firewall,Firefox w/Adblock.

Currently installed is:
Win Patrol, Secunia, MalwareBytes, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, and of course, Windows Defender.

Drop Spybot..!! It can make troubles with avast..!

@ CrowDog

Adding RAM is the best and cheapest option.

Get the Crucial System Scanner tool:
http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner

You do not have to buy from Crucial but you can print out its recomendation and go to a local PC store to purchase at least 1GB RAM that probably would only cost $20 or less.

Windows Defender should be kept up to date through its portal:
Latest definition version: 1.83.1755.0
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Definitions/ADL.aspx

In Vista the start could be set to Automatic (Delayed Start) on resource constrained systems.

Asyn,

Thanks for the heads-up!  I can believe it; I learn so much from experienced users!

Are any others unnecessary?  I just read secunia could be uninstalled, and just go to the online scan once a week.

You're welcome..!
Yes, you can also use Secunia's online scanner.
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/?task=load
I would also drop Spyware Blaster.
