Avast 5 and gmail
« on: January 30, 2010, 06:39:41 PM »
Hi, I am new to the forum, but have been using Avast for a long time. Great product, simple to use. After upgrading to 5, I have been struggling with the mail shield.
After reading several posts in the forum, I have tried to get Avast 5 (5.0.396) to work with gmail. I have used the following settings:
Outlook 2000 set to no ssl, default ports
Avast 5 Mail Shield Expert Mode, configured new gmail servers as follows:
imap.gmail.com SSL 993
smtp.gmail.com SSL 465 (I also tried TSL 587)
When I try to send/receive in outlook, I get an error that the server does not respond.

If I go back to ssl in Outlook 2000 and disable scanning of in and outbound mails in the mail shield, everything works perfecly.

Any ideas?

Thought I got it solved. Apparently one needs to enter the server name as gmail.com, not as imap.gmail.com in the expert settings.
Works like a charm now with Outlook Express.
However no luck with Outlook 2000 (not so surprising, as it's old) or Outlook 2007 (surprising).
I have turned off scanning of in and outgoing messages for the time being.

I too can not get Avast 5 to work with gmail imap.  Avast correctly picks up and fills in their mail page with SSL and TTL and correct ports numbers - but when I go to outlook and set defaults, Outlook will not connect to gmail.

Outlook works fine if I leave it set to gmails suggested setting (same ones now copied into Avast mail page) but this would seem to not allow email scanning.

Does Avast require a pop3 connection to itself instead of an imap???

Avast! 5 works fine with gmail imap when using Thunderbird, so must be something about the Outlook setup that is causing problems.  I use imap.gmail.com as the server and port 143.  Unfortunately I don't use Outlook.

Well after thinking about this and how great the team is at Avast - I simply assumed that the MS plug in for Outlook 2007 takes care of everything and I should set my outlook 2007 back to the normal SSL and TTL with the normal gmail ports 993 and 587.

To test this theory I went to avast mail shield, expert setting, Behavior and checked the tab to insert a note into clean message and sent myself a message.  It came back with outgoing and incoming text added - so looks to me that Avast is scanning and is doing something "under the covers" when Outlook 2007 is used....

I just updated to AVAST 5.0.418, hoping that the imap.gmail.com issue with the MS Outlook plugin would be fixed. All my other accounts work fine with the Mail Shield on, but gmail still does not work. Does anyone know, wether the outlook / gmail issue has been fixed in 418?
Otherwise 418 works like a breeze, wonderful program. Thanks a million.

I don't use any version of Outlook, but we have users on this computer with web-based G-Mail and Yahoo Mail accounts and Avast treats them both very well.

The problem really seems to be only with Outlook and imap gmail. Other people have reported success with Thunderbird and other configurations. The culprit seems to be the MS Outlook plugin.
Let's hope the plugin gets fixed soon.
