So, is the avast service running? (Control Panel -> Admistrative Tools -> Services).
If not, can it be started?
If not, what error message are you getting?

Thanks
Vlk

No it is not running. When I try to start it I get the message from Microsoft saying that the program was having problems and had to close. Do I want to report it? Under that there is Error 1067: The Process Terminated Unexpectedly. Still no resident protection running. BTW... I have Windows XP Pro Srv Pack 2.

Thanks for your help!

Title: Can't turn Avast! back on after being - The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error.

so - did anyone ever figure out why the rpc error suddenly comes us and can't be remedied? and why when the directions say to turn off avast! and then turn on - it won't turn back on? And why now my computer is relatively unprotected?

does purchasing the home version help?

No... it was never resolved. After sending you the file that you asked for (which I never received a response from you after) I got in touch with Avast and they told me to uninstall it and reinstall it. Still have the same exact problem. I still run Avast as my one and only anti virus but the residential services still do not work, or I would assume does the virus recovery database, but I have a really good firewall installed so... when I do my weekly maintenance programs I always run a boot scan and trojan scan. Only once have I found a trojan. I don't know what else to do. Nothing seems to make it work and I really don't want to use a different antivirus. Thanks for any help you can give me!

Since this is your first post, I assume you have the same problem, or what you think is the same problem as OsoVega, the person who started this thread.

It may help if you could provide the followiing information:-

What Operating system (98,98SE, XP-Home, XP-Pro, Vista etc) do you have, and what update service packs are installed?
What is the type and speed of your CPU, and how much memory does you PC have?
What fireall software do you have installed (and the version)?
What version of Avast! do you have installed, and what is the VPS (update) file version?
Do you have any other security/antispyware suites or programs installed?
Have you tried repairing/uninstalling/reinstalling the latest Avast?

The Home Edition of Avast is free, it's the Professional Edition that can be purchased, however I don't believe doing that would solve this particular problem.

No, the free version should (must) work.

No... it was never resolved. After sending you the file that you asked for (which I never received a response from you after)
Sorry...

Sometimes, old antivirus installation and bad uninstallation prevent avast to be correctly installed. I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

Finally! I am happy to report that after 5 tries to get it work it finally is. I followed your instructions to the tee. The only thing that I may have done different this time (but I can't imagine not doing before) is that I disabled my firewall before doing any of the process. Thanks for the help!

I run Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2; 1200 MHz; 256 MB; Outpost Firewall Pro Version 4.0.

Outpost Firewall Pro Version 4.0.
It shouldn't conflict with avast but, does it have other features like antispyware or HIPS protection?

I run Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2; 1200 MHz; 256 MB; Outpost Firewall Pro Version 4.0.

I used that for quite some time without problems. However, I would ensure that you disable the anti-spyware (AS) component, a) it brings little to the party, avast has integrated AS and you could use an on demand AS application, b) it is very noisy on boot (e.g. opens lots of files to scan, etc.) this cause avast to scan additional files and extends the boot duration.

I only had the attack detection and I think the DNS cache components enabled, I just wanted it to be a firewall and let me take care of the rest.

Thanks. I will try to disable what you said. I am having a problem since I installed the avast and I have checked both the avast and the firewall to try and solve it but can't seem to figure out what is causing it. My Outlook Express will not allow me to read my email. It just says that there are no emails and then when I click on any of the buttons (i.e. send/receive, etc.) it freezes up on me. The curser turns into the hour glass and that is it. Also, my Yahoo Messenger will not open. It won't even come up on the screen. Any suggestions?

Greetings.  Same problem here - RPC error - but I am unable to uninstall Avast!  I can't even get to the point of a new installation.  From the control panel, I only get a screen flash when I try to uninstall.  'Repair' is not an option.  WinXP, SP2, updates up to date; any suggestions?

Maybe you should remove the avast entries into Outpost settings (programs allowed) and try allowing the following programs to connect:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.

It would be better to start a new thread just for your problem, we can help from there.

Ok... I disabled the features in Outpost Firewall that you suggested and now my Outlook Express and Yahoo Messenger work just fine. However..., when I rebooted after making the changes it totally changed my log on screen..., but that is no big deal. I can live with that. My main concern is are you sure that my computer is completely protected now that I have disabled those features in the firewall? I went for a year without the residential providers working in avast and my firewall still protected me very, very well. Just want to make sure that it is totally safe because I do a lot of work on my computer that needs to stay inaccessible. Thanks once again for you help.

I think what David has posted is safe, i.e., disabling the antispyware tool of the firewall. You're very good covered by avast.

About the logon change, it shouldn't mess anything... what does exactly happened?
Title: Re: avast!: The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error.
Post by: DavidR on September 20, 2008, 12:21:38 AM
Well when I disabled those features it didn't do anything to my log-on on my old system (also XP Pro) I had to click my user account and enter my password.

Greeting from Germany. I've the same problem with the notification and no idea to solve it. All I can read here I've done and try. Install and reinstall, formated the harddrive, setup several times a new windows xp. No success. The red button don't disappears.

The next time, I startet the computer, something strange happens: the red button disappears. Then it works for a while.
After a while the red dot is back. I don't no what happened.
I'm desperate and helpless. Somebody has an idea?

Did you have any other antivirus in the past in this computer?
If so, how did you remove it?

If you never had other antivirus in this machine, I suggest full computer on-line scanning, because your avast installation seems corrupted (maybe Bagle/Beagle infection):
Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner) (very good detection rates)
ESET NOD32 (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/)
Trendmicro housecall (http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp)
F-Secure (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml)
BitDefender (http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html) (free removal of the malware)

The person who built my computer for me installed a special log on background screen. It was silver with a big XP Pro in the middle of the it. On the left upper corner it had a blue butterfly with "Elaine's World" next to it. It also told me how many unopened Hotmail emails I had received since the last time I checked my email. I would have to click on the "Elaine's World" to log on to my computer. Now I get what I assume must be the default blue Windows log on screen. Still have to click on a butterfly to log on though. This blue screen is divided down the middle with a small Windows logo on the left side and the butterfly on the right side.

I would imagine that your special log-on background screen might have required that your desktop was set to active desktop ?

I don't think that this would be easy for you to replicate so you might have to contact him again.

Title: Re: avast!: The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error.

No... I did not run the online scanner. That post was made after I had already got my avast working. I don't really see a reason to run it now since everything seems to be working fine. I can live with not having a customized log on page. I am just happy to have the avast and the firewall working together! Thanks!

I had already got my avast working.
Is it really fully working?
You can use other tools to be sure you're clean (if you're infected the avast installation even correctly could not solve all the troubles...). Use SUPERantispyware (http://www.superantispyware.com), MBAM (http://malwarebytes.org/mbam.php) or Spyware Terminator (http://www.spywareterminator.com/) to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.

The Scanning don't work, because another antivirus is on my machine. I think, I have to deinstall avast firtly. A second problem is java. I can't install java on my computer.

Sorry, wrong expression. Only avast is in use. The question is to uninstall it.

The question is to uninstall it.
1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first. (Boot in Safe Mode if it fails in normal Windows).
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
