Title: Avast viruschest not available
Post by: SaskiaS on July 25, 2012, 09:38:54 AM
Hi,

I did a full viruscheck with avast (the full, paid version) and it found several threats (low and high priority), I tried to move them to the viruschest but again (as before) I keep getting the message (translated from dutch by me):
"Viruschest server not available, RPC communication failed (2147422219)"

The viruschest never workes. Why ?  ??? and how can I solve this ?

If this is something that can't be fixed quick --> should I post in a different topic my high priority threat so that I can start, with your help, to solve that first ? It is "JS:Agent-ABZ(Trj)"

Thanks and regards, Saskia

Hi there,

thanks in advance for your help.

Yesterday, when AVAST found that infection which it cannot remove, I also ran MBAM full-scan.
MBAM found some threaths which I told it to remove, and after that the scan from MBAM is clean. So the MBAM quickscan I did today, as you told me to, is clean but I have also attached the files from yesterday.

Please find attached the MBAM logs and OTL logs

Hi you have an old sinowal infection, I may not be able to remove that , but it is inert and harmless
The virus chest prolem suggests a problem withiun Avast, have you tried a repair install ?
Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
THEN

Download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here (http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Hi,

sorry for the late response (although that is more my problem  :) ) I am always tired and cannot spend much time at a day at the pc

I ran the OTL fix and quickscan, please see the log attached

I also ran TDSSkiller, but either I did something wrong there or it did not find anything malicious. After the Scan it said it found 9 threaths, which I "skipped" as you said, and I chose "continue", after which nothing happened  :-\ Please see the report attached.
Or did you mean I have to choose cure and then continue ?

No that was good, I am checking out the most usual areas for malware

Two more to run now to analyse different ares.. Are you still getting the Virus chest error ?

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1  (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here  (http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_your_Security_Programs_t96260.html&pid=494216#entry494216)

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3.  If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

THEN

run farbar service scanner (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/FSS.exe)

Tick "All" options.
Press "Scan".
It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.

Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Hi,

Please find attached ComboFix and FFS logs.

The computer seems to be running fine after ComboFix. It has deleted only a few files, as far as i could see.

I also ran the Repair Install for Avast. However, I cannot tell if the viruschest is working now, because it only says that it's not available when I try to move virusses to the viruschest, and at this moment Avast can't find any virusses  :'(    :)

The way to check that is to add a file to the chest... Any file will do as it will just take a copy and leave the original there

Open Avast and go to the virus chest
Right click the blank area and select add
(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/open%20chest.jpg)

Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\System32\aswBoot.exe
(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/navigate.JPG)

Select the file
(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/select.JPG)

Does it copy to the chest ?

No it does not  add anything to the viruschest :( I have tried several files.

RPC errors have in the past been related to other AVs also installed or remnants of one remaining. Not sure if this is the problem as I'm sure essexboy would have mentioned another AV running or remnants showing up in the logs.

Essexboy asked if you had tried an avast repair, I didn't notice an answer to that question.
Try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and select Repair, click next and follow.

Type in Services.msc
Press OK

Then Locate Avast service
Right click and select properties
Select the Dependencies tab

Download and run the AVG removal tool from here http://www.avg.com/ww-en/utilities

Download the latest version to your desktop from here (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe)
Download aswClear from here (http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe)
Go to Programs and Features > add/remove and uninstall Avast
Reboot back to safe mode and run aswClear (select all versions of Avast ) once for each version, no need to reboot in between
After the last one reboot

Install the updated Avast

Hi,

I got so frustrated with my pc that I chose not to do anything with it for a few days..so here's my response to your message of a few days ago.

I have download and ran the AVG removal tool. I do not know if it went well, because it said it would ask for a reboot but it hasn't. So I have attached the log it made to be sure.

I have also download the latest version of Avast, but then i noticed that the link you gave me is for Avast Free, and I am using the paid verson (antivirus + internet security and all). So I think I might have to use another link. So I have searched the Avast website and came up with a page for existing users, saying download your product here -->  which started the download of avast-internet-security-setup.exe

Now that I have both of those in my downloads-folder, I assume I can get on with the aswclear and the removal and reinstall of avast ? Or do I need to move those avast downloads out of my downloadsfolder ?

Download and Install Combofix

  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.[/b]
THEN
run farbar service scanner (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/FSS.exe)

I ran those and attached those logs a few messages ago, but I did not hear from you yet if those were "clean"/good.

They were clean otherwise I would have removed any bad boys

Yes now run the full uninstall and then reinstal the fresh copy
Title: Re: Avast viruschest not available

Download aswClear from here (http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe)
Go to Programs and Features > add/remove and uninstall Avast
Reboot back to safe mode and run aswClear (select all versions of Avast ) once for each version, no need to reboot in between
After the last one reboot

well..that went horribly wrong !!  :'(

I didn't know why I would have to remove all versions, but I thought "better do as he says, in case more versions have been installed anyway".
I noticed aswClear wanted me to fill in a path, so I did for the first one, and the next, but I did not notice that the Avast folder was removed by then. So I told it to remove a avast version from C:\Programs  . It did.......together with all other programs :o
I tried Windos System Repair, I took the latest Repairpoint and it did put back all the icons on my desktop, so I thought I was saved...but unfortunately it seems that is all it has done, put back the icons, programms won't start.
Only the Office-files like Word, Excel etc. are working now again, after I reactivated them inserting the cd as the pc asked.

Is there a solution or do I really have to remove all those programms completely and reinstall them all one by one ?? :(
Please don't tell me I have just gotten myself heaps of work extra !
If that is the only solution, perhaps I should just be done with it and reinstall windows and all programs completely ?  Because how will I know that indeed all reminents (how do you spell that ?) of all programs are gone before I reinstall them ?

PLEASE HELP !!

Thanks!

p.s.:
I did not reinstall avast yet. Since I don't know how to get out of this s... now. At the moment I have just activated windows firewall, to have at least some kind of protection.

But still something of Avast is still available !! So even the removal did not work well (except for my other programs...) I was trying to find out which programms all don't work, because it is not every programm. Then i accidentaly clicked on the avast internet security-icon, thinking "ohno, of course that one is not working", but to my surprise it did open avast !! It just says that I am not secured, and when I try to activate/secure by pushing the repair-this-now-button, it does nothing.

OK, since no reply came, I assume Essexboy either does not have the time or is not at home. I really needed the pc, so I have tried somethings myself.

Good news is that avast dit reinstall correct and the viruschest is working again. :)

Now all that's left to do is to undo the damage I have done.  :(

Problem is that that thing I did wrong also f...ked up the uninstall-programs. Some simple programs were easy to fix and are working fine again.

At the moment I am trying to completely uninstall my printer (HP officejet 4219 all-in-one) but whatever I try it does not uninstall complete. I suppose that is why the software (which I do not have on cd anymore, but I have downloaded full software from HP website), will extract but not open the install-menu. Any ideas, anyone ?

Thanks, Saskia

Sorry about that I lost notification for some reason

Lets see if I can locate the damage and restore it if I can

Although to be honest I am not optimistic...

Could you give me a list of the programmes that you are having problems with
Then run OTL so that I can at least give you a clean shot at re-installing them

Problem is I ran the OTL scan but I cannot attach any logs to this reply...what's wrong again now ?

Why can't you attach the log, what errors ?

If the file exceeds 192KB size limit - You can use a file sharing site such as Mediafire.com - Upload to http://www.mediafire.com/ and post the sharing link.
Title: Re: Avast viruschest not available

The file is 45 Kb. So that should work.

Problem is when I choose Attachments and Other Options, and I choose BROWSE, nothing happens.

I am trying this MediaFire, but uptill now I have not received the needed e-mail to confirm my account there.
Title: Re: Avast viruschest not available
Post by: SaskiaS on August 05, 2012, 05:34:39 PM
Ok, problem solved. I restarted the pc. Thought it was worth to try...and what do you know  :)

Please find attached the OTL-log

Like I said before, I already have deleted and re-installed a few programs by myself, that seem to be running fine now. But I do not know if there are any remnants of the software that I already succeeded in uninstalling and reinstalling (like the game Sid Meiers Civilization 4, MalwareBytes, Workrave etc.)

I have not tried yet to delete and reinstall the following not-working programs:
* zoombrowser express (a programm that belongs to our Canon photocamera)
* Photoimpression 4 + Epson Smart Panel (they belong to my EPSON flatbedscanner)

Also not working correct is
* Designer (for digital photoalbum) but I am not sure if this is caused by the same problem or was already not functioning well. I got the idea that maybe this has been installed twice earlier.

But most of all, I am having big troubles trying to uninstall and re-install all HP and Hewlett-Packard files. I do not know if the problem it that there are to many remnants of the old software, that causes the software not to install ?
I have downloaded the software for my HP Officejet 4219 alles-in-één from http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-23694-2&cc=nl&dlc=nl&lc=nl&os=228&product=351121&sw_lang= .
I have used this download before to install the printer on my computer, which worked fine untill I did that thing with aswclear wrong, so it is the correct one.
To make sure there was not just a mistake in the download, I have downloaded it again. But it just does not do what it is supposed to.
When I start it / click it, it starts extracting files. It extracts untill 100%, then it opens a dialog-box, asking me if I want to execute the Installation file and.....that's it ! No Installation menu starts.

I do not know if there are other files that are not working well. Some programs that were also in C:\Program Files, , like e.g. one of the smaller games, were not removed at all and kept working like they should have.

I will remove the HP that I can find then get you to run a windows repair.  On completion retry to install the printer

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
THEN

Download  Windows Repair (all in one)  from this site (http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html)

Install the programme then run

here are the OTL logs.

I will follow your other instructions shortly
Title: Re: Avast viruschest not available
Post by: SaskiaS on August 05, 2012, 07:24:08 PM
Hi,

I installed the Windows Repair Program, and went straight to step 3 (the System File Check), skipping step 1 and 2. I hope that was correct.

The Windows Repair Program asks at step 3, when checking if all secured windos-files are the original version, for the CD of Windows XP Professional because of files that need to be copied to the folder DLL Cache.
But we do not have that, we have Windows XP Home Edition.
I inserted the XP Home Edition-cd, but it does not agree and keeps asking for XP Professional.
So, I chose cancel for those messages. It warns that I will have to insert the cd later, and it has asked for this at least 10 times.

Perhaps I have downloaded a wrong version of the program ? Or are there no specific versions of the program for the several windows editions?

Should I continue or not ?

It has finished with checking if all secured windos-files are the original version, and is not asking for the cd anymore. But now there is still a ms-dos-window open C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe. ..ehm correction there was..while typing this message I accidentaly either clicked it away?! or pushed enter as it asked?!

Should I reboot and choose Start Repairs or not ?

Yes the programme is suitable for all versions of windows...  Restart the computer and go straight to the repair section

We will run SFC a bit later

It is looking for it in C:\DOCUME~1\SASKIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\7zS4AA3\Setup\QuickProjects\ but cannot find it there. Were could I tell it to look otherwise ?
Or should I just choose cancel there ?

OK lets see if we can get windows to install it for you

Go to control panel > printers and faxes
If the printer is there then right click it and select delete
Ensure that the printer is plugged in
Then select Add a printer
Ensure Local printer and Automatically detect Plug and Play are selected
Then follow the prompts

Title: Re: Avast viruschest not available

when one thing goes well, the other thing goes wrong.

I had/have problems with the Mozilla Firefox webbrowser so I have restarted the pc.  After that the windows installer could find the plug-and-play printer. So I can print and I can copy.

I can however still not scan with this machine, because it says it needs software to be installed.

I also think that maybe the printr is not installed correct because it was very very quick with installing and I did not go through any menus, it just said : looking for...then found and installed

That was the base printer drivers being installed

Could you now retry the disc
Title: Re: Avast viruschest not available

I do not have a installdisk, I got this printer from someone without it. So I have downloaded software (which worked perfect untill my recent actions, so it's not that the download is incorrect).

I have tried it, but again it just extracts files and does nothing afterwards, it does not install anything.

Title: Re: Avast viruschest not available

I have located the uninstall utility for your printer on the HP website... This will totally uninstall the printer allowing  a new install http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software4/COL8988/mp-24061-2/gr_uninst.exe
Title: Re: Avast viruschest not available
Post by: SaskiaS on August 08, 2012, 06:05:18 PM
Thanks,
I already used a HP-scrubber, but the uninstall you found was a different one, so I tried that and it removed the printer again
I have rebooted the computer and tried to install it again...but the problem stays the same..it won't open the installmenu when i execute the software
So now we are back at the point where I can print (I have let WindowsInstaller install the basic printerfunctions again as you told me before), but the rest is not functioning well

Actually, apart from the printer, I still have other problems:
e.g. lots of times my Mozilla Firefox Webbrowser stops/crashes;
sometimes a game, that I have completely uninstalled and re-installed, crashes;
my Mediapayer sometimes stops working at start-up/crashes;
and when I close Windows I sometimes see the normal closing-window and sometimes a completely different closing-window, both of Windows but i think it is strange.

I feel that there are still a lot of things that are not fixed well.

And with us unable to get this printer-thing going as it should, combined with other smaller (?) problems popping up now and then, I am wondering more and more if I should not just stop trying to undo all this :'(, and accept the flaws for now. And then in a few weeks time, when I hope to have more time and maybe even more energy, perhaps do a complete re-installation of windows (and all other programs).
What do you think ? How big are our (or since you do all the thinking, it are actually your) chances to get this computer working well again without me re-installing everything ?

Title: Re: Avast viruschest not available

'Tis a moot question... The fastest and easiest would be to put a new windows on ...

Within Program files there may have been some shared dll's that are now missing

And XP is not as forgiving as windows 7 in this area

If you have a windows CD we could run a system file check to determine if all windows components are working as they should

Hi,

Ok, we have this again...like with the Repairs Program:

When checking if all secured windos-files are the original version, it askes for the CD of Windows XP Professional because of files that need to be copied to the folder DLL Cache.
But we do not have that, we have Windows XP Home Edition installed on this pc.

OK run sfc /scannow again but when it comes up and asks for the disc there should be a browse option.. Use that and select the i386 folder
Title: Re: Avast viruschest not available
Post by: SaskiaS on August 10, 2012, 08:00:45 AM
It has asked for the (wrong, Windos Xp Professional) disk several times now, but never with a browse-option. (or I have overseen it, several times...)

As far as I can remember it also did not have a browse-option when I ran the sfc-scan (step3) of that Tweeking/ Windows Repair-program you told me about.

Could the problem with it asking for the wrong cd perhaps be that we have Windows XP Home Edition installed with Office XP Professional ? Perhaps it mistakes the office-version for the windows-version ?
Title: Re: Avast viruschest not available
Post by: essexboy on August 10, 2012, 03:02:49 PM
There is a solution to this but it will require you to make a minor edit in the registry

Click on the Start button, type REGEDIT in the Run dialog box off the Start Menu, click OK, and then navigate to the following key in the left pane of the Regedit window:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\

When you click on the last subkey (Setup), you will see in the right pane a value called SourcePath, which will point to your CD-ROM drive. Assuming that you have made the copy of the I386 folder to the root of your C: drive, then all you have to do is double click on this value and change it to point to C: instead.

You might also need to modify the value SourcePath at this location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\

ehm, you say assuming I have made the copy of the i386 folder to the root of my c:drive, but like I said I have several i386 folders. I have not copied any of them to the c: root, because I would not know which one to pick.

My i386 folders are in:
C:\Windows\DriverCache
C:\Windows ServicePackFiles
C:\Windows ServicePackFiles\ServicePackCache
C:\ProgramFiles\Java\jre7\lib
C:\Windows\System32\Spool\XPSES
C:\Windows\System32\ReinstallBackup\0000  (and also in 0001,0002,0003,0004,0005,00011) \Driver Files
C:\Windows\System32\Spool\XPSES\i386

today I have searched for that i386 again, and it also found a folder in D:\13eef7c6eaf6c30a2ed901fa, it did not find that one a few days ago

Unfortunately all my research would suggest a clean install to be the only option

Hi there,

sorry for the late reply, that might have looked ungratefull or something for all your help. Which I am not, but we are going through very difficult family circumstances.

Not so happy with your conclusion of course, but you had warned me that it might end up to that. Thanks anyway for all your help. I will do a reinstall of windows as soon as things have setlled down here.

best regards, Saskia
