NTVDM
« on: August 28, 2004, 05:14:03 PM »
Hello
I've installed AVAST on my computer (XP home edition, french).
Since, some 16 bits applications (FAX ...) produce this message (translated from French) : NTVDM processor encountered unautorized instruction" and application cannot run.
If I uninstall AVAST, this message disappears.
If I reinstall AVAST, it appears again.
Someone encoutered this problem ?
Thank you.

Hello
I've resolved my problem, by searching "NTVDM" keyword in forum !!!
The problem is in
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers" key.
In my PC, this key contained, for variable LDD, several lines : one for Norton antivirus (uninstalled !!!) and several same lines relating to AVAST.
Solution : keep only one line AVAST and delete all other lines.
NTVDM becomes OK, and 16 bits applications can run OK.
With the bad key, NTVDM was excluded from task's list running on my PC, and NTVDM was blocked by AVAST.
Thanks to the forum.

Definetivelly, the main cause of this is Symantec  >:(  >:(
NTVDM was not blocked by avast but by Norton driver.
I'm absolutely sure about this, as I edit the Registry too, I started to use avast because of this error. Problem on Windows Registry is related here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=807

It was a long journey since that time  8)
Enjoy avast and do not ask avast to change this as it`s a Symantec trash  >:(

How is this a symantec problem? I have never had any symantec software on my computer.  I installed Avast after a clean install of SP2, tell me exactly how this is a problem with software that was never installed on my computer?

Pick a thread were we can discuss this since there are two threads on the same subject.

I picked the other thread... Can you go there? Thanks.

The Norton installation was presumed because of this:

one for Norton antivirus (uninstalled !!!)

Sorry. But I had the same problem with VDD keys.

I do not think it is norton antivirus's problem.

With Norton antivirus (2002 or 2004), NTVDM was OK.
With Norton antivirus uninstalled, and Avast installed, NTVDM becomes not OK
With Avast unistalled, NTVDM is OK
With Avast reinstalled, NTVDM becomes again not OK.

No problem with AVG. Only one antivirus was installed at a time !!!

NTVDM seems to be related with malfunction of Avast.
Perhaps Avast could control and correct automatically the concerned key, as made manually.

We see registry contains some keys concerning NAV even if NAV if uninstalled. This is not new !

There seem to be some problems with this key and XP SP2... We've updated our installation program so that it should work better in the upcoming versions...

Thanks

I use avast with XP SP2, but with XP SP1 (some days ago) it was the same problem ...

Under XP SP1, there might've been the multiple entries but the NTVDM subsystem should've worked OK... (I'm pretty confident it was).

This definately wasn't a problem in SP1 here, its good your going to update your installer, but when you release a program update, if it detects that they are running sp2 have it verify that the registry key has the information to avoid problems with current installs on SP2 please.  This should save some grief with inexpeirenced users hopefully.
