restore deleted file
« on: September 24, 2004, 08:41:31 PM »
While running a scan avast reported a virus in
C:\Documents and Settings\Kenneth\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\default.vft\Mail\mail.cox-internet.com\Inbox" file
I deleted the file which wiped out all of my e-mail.
Is there a way to un-delete this file?

wibb,

When you deleted the "virus", you deleted the directory where it was located....Your Inbox.

Check the recycle bin to see if it appears there.
Also check the Avast Chest to ascertain if by chance you sent it there for quarantine.

If it does not appear in either place, then as a last resort, you can try to access your email via webmail.  Most ISPs have internet access.  If you did not set Thunderbird to delete mail from the server after download, then the email may still be on the server.

otherwise.....it's all gone.  Sorry.

I posted some information about Thunderbird and avast here:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=7439;start=msg59074#msg59074

Sorry, as you can see by Techie's post and that information, if you delete the virus in Thunderbird mail you deleted all mail file  :'(

Checked re-cycle bin & avast chest no file.
It sounds like I am out of luck.
I take it that there is no way to restore a file that avast has deleted.
Thanks for taking the time to help.

Wibb,

I think there is a program that CAN restore a deleted file off the hard disk.

Try a web search under Google for "Deleted File Restore Program" or go to www.snapfiles.com or www.wantdbest.com

I am pretty sure they have a program you might try.
I have not used one myself but I know of others that have used them with "some" success.

Good luck.

As long as the diskspace the file was on is not overwritten, you can get the file back. Since it was infected, I do not recommend to do so. But the choice is yours. A freeware util which can do so is Handy Recovery. This is a link to version 1 which is freeware. Version 2 is payware and the demo of it allows you only to recover 1 file a day.

Eddy,

Thank you for the assistance.  There are a few others and if I find them, I will post them here later.

You could try start/run/cmd/recover /?
