It would help them try to pin down the problem if you gave more information.

What email client, what email service (does it use SSL, etc.) ISP, etc. ?
What errors are displayed, etc. ?

If they are the port settings that are in your Windows Live Mail accounts, then avast can't actually scan them (as they are secure encrypted) connections. So avast would normally throw up an error/notification that it can't scan SSL mail.

If you do want avast to scan those email accounts, you have to uncheck the secure connection bit (sorry I don't use Windows Live Mail) and change the ports to smtp 25 and pop3 110.

Your settings in the avast Mail Shield, Expert settings, SSL Accounts, for those accounts would/should be: smtp 465, Encryption SSL; Pop3  995 Encryption SSL.

If i change any of the settings my email will not send or receive.
At the moment my email behaves perfectly so i don't want to change anything.
When the final version arrives i will speak to Sky on the subject.
Thanks for your assistance

OK, I have just seen something in this post in the RC1 topic http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=100153.msg800235#msg800235 by pk to crofty59 that might be related (or not if you have those settings in your email client avast can't scan them).

David.
I have been playing around with settings in my email client.Unticked SSL.
The interesting thing is that my email still works so does Mail Shield.
How about that?
Will still speak to sky when we have a final version of Avast

When speaking to Sky, whilst their support may be good, I would have to question if they actually know how the Mail Shield works. A very simplistic explanation, it becomes the man in the middle redirecting the email ports through its proxy (so they can be scanned) and then handles the secure connection (if required) to send them on their way.

I very much doubt if they do.
I want to speak to them about using Port in 110 and 25 out both with ssl unticked.
That seems to give me the result i wanted.Email works so does Avast.

The problem is that as soon as you mention that they will say it has to be 993 and 465 respectively, they don't know that avast handles the secure connection (as in the SSL Account settings of the Mail Shield). They won't actually know as the connection to their server will be SSL, secure, encrypted, otherwise the connection would fail if it were 110 and 25.

You don't have to tell them anything, they don't send emails to your email ports but to your email address, which are saved on your SKY email servers until such time as you collect them.
