Essexboy,

OTL fix ran fine but while running Quick Scan, the computer crashed. Could it have something to do with me selecting All Users for the Quick Scan? That doesn't make sense to me but thought I'd mention. After rebooting, I re-ran OTL Quick Scan and it ran fine. Then I ran ComboFix and it ran fine too.

I am attaching all the relevant logs: the output of OTL Run Fix (07182012_224451.log), the output of the successful OTL Quick Scan (OTL_07182012.Txt), the output of ComboFix (CombFix_07172012.txt), and the message I received when the PC rebooted after the crash (Crash.txt).

Two weird things are happening: (1) three icons have appeared on my desktop after the OTL Quick Scan: Desktop.ini twice and a Word document named ~SCIALS1.docx. (2) When I try to open C:\ComboFix.txt, I get a system message saying an "illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion."

Given the crash and the suspect icons, I am doubtful that my system is clean. Any help would be much appreciated. I will use the PC as normal (Internet connection included) and let you know how it goes.

Thanks,
Afoyfs

Ref the illegal operation

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3.  If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Sometimes malware does fight back and crash the system, but it is not a major problem if it only occurs once
The icons are system files and will be rehidden once we finish

After this run can you let me know what problems remain

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL
    IE - HKCU\..\SearchScopes\{70D46D94-BF1E-45ED-B567-48701376298E}: "URL" = http://127.0.0.1:4664/search&s=_LDvHwHZa0jdvtz6sJjWntW1BVU?q={searchTerms}
    O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [CREATERESTOREPOINT]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Both the OTL Fix and Quick Scan ran perfectly and I am attaching the log from both here.

The PC has been running fine over the past day.

Thanks,
Afoyfs
