Is Avast for Linux on demand only & not real time & how does one download it, via synaptic?

Hope it isn't a hogger?

Yes, on demand only (not real time).

& how does one download it, via synaptic?
It's not available in the repositories. You need to download it from avast! site.

Tech I downloaded the deb package & installed it. Now it wants registration or a license key?

If your Distro uses Synaptic, just completely Uninstall Avast! from there.

you offer so little information about which Linux platform you're using it's impossible to give advice.  ;)

Normally, find Avast! for Linux in Synaptic, right click on it, select Uninstall, hit Apply.
