Can't uninstall avast! Anti-Theft
« on: September 25, 2012, 05:05:41 PM »
I am unable uninstall avast! Anti-theft.  I am unable to remove avast! Anti-Theft as a device administrator.

I am able to reach the Device administrators screen in 3 ways:
1) Through OS settings
1a) Settings
1b) Location & security
1c) Select device administrators
Note that I am not asked for my avast! pin using this method.

2) Through avast settings
2a) avast! Mobile Security.  Enter PIN.
2b) Anti-Theft
2c) Set up advanced settings
2d) Lock text, GPS, wipe
2e) Device admin

3) Through avast settings
3a) avast! Mobile Security.  Enter PIN.
3b) settings
3c) avast! Anit-Theft removal wizard.  Enter PIN.
--- software runs checks and says "avast Anti-Theft must not be set as device administrator. Please remove the device administrator setting."
3d) click setting.

Each of these three methods gets me to the same screen, which I call REMOVAL SCREEN 1

====== REMOVAL SCREEN 1
This is a screen that looks like a table with a header and one entry
- The top bar, in grey, says "Device administrators".
- The only entry has
= a generic android app icon,
= the text string "avast Anti-Theft"
= a check box with a green check mark
Clicking on that table entry leads to REMOVAL SCREEN 2

====== REMOVAL SCREEN 2
This screen has the same header, but has a differnt table body, and also has buttons at the bottom
- The same top bar, in grey, saying "Device administrators".
- a second line similar to the previous avast! entry line:
= a generic android app icon,
= the text string "avast Anti-Theft"
= (there is no check box)
- a three line paragraph in smaller font, "This administrator is active and allows the application avast! Anti-Theft to perform the following operations:
- a final line, in orange, listing the operation:
= an exclamation point in a triangle
= text, "Erase all data"
= (earlier, I thought I saw another operation, but I don't recall what it was)
- the bottom of the screen has two buttons:
= Deactivate
= Cancel
Clicking deactivate leads to REMOVAL SCREEN 3
Clicking Cancel leads to REMOVAL SCREEN 1

====== REMOVAL SCREEN 3
This is a popup window, with a title, some text, and two buttons.
- title, in grey:
= exclamation point in a triangle
= "Device Administrator"
- text
= "Do you really want to remove this account?" ... "Proceed?"
- 2 buttons
= OK
= cancel
Clicking OK leads to a pause, the REMOVAL SCREEN 1
Clicking cancel leads to REMOVAL SCREEN 2

Thank you for your reply.

No, it is not rooted, nor does it have a custom ROM.  But there was a time I bending the power/micro usb jack pretty hard (yes, I can understand why one might call me an idiot), so there may be some internal damage.

Would you have any other recommendations?  I don't really need the protection, but I could use the memory back.

Hm do you have any third party apps installed? See this article, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=103583.msg829928#msg829928

Its not related to admin rights but maybe its related...

I've added and removed so many apps, I can't be sure which ones I got from the Amazon Store -- if that was even the third party repository.

Just to be sure, though, I uninstalled Norton, turned it off, pulled the battery, said three Hail Mary's,, turned the phone back on, and tried to remove avast! Anti-Theft as device administrator.  No luck.  Then I unchecked "Unknown Sources" from Main OS -> Settings -> Applications, and tried to de-administrator again.  Still, no go.  Dumping Ad-aware didn't help either.

I have to admit, I do think the "This phone has been lost or stolen" siren is still kind of cool.

Anyway, I thought it odd I could try to remove admin privileges without the password.

I also think it odd that
- [ Main OS -> avast! main -> avast! Anti-Theft -> Help, System State, About -> About ] shows a version number of 2.0.2571
while
- [ Main OS -> settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> avast! Anti-Theft ] shows a version number of 2.0.2570.

in this case unfortunately i can not help you. it seems to be a system issue. if your phone is rooted you could remove the file from command line though.

If you have installed Avast and the Avast anti theft application on your Android and decide you no longer need the Avast anti theft app, you may find it difficult to remove.

It is protected so you first need to remove the protection.

Goto Settings >> Security >> Select Device Administrators – you can then remove the tick alongside the app.

Then go back to your apps section to uninstall it, It will uninstall successfully.

Well I didn't find an answer from anybody regarding this issue. I dug through my phone (Droid RAZR HD w/4.1.2 jellybean) for a while to find this... To solve: for jellybean; Settings>>Security>>Device administrators>> uncheck avast anti-theft or update agent.. then go to settings>>apps>>running apps>> now find update agent and select then force stop the app and uninstall from the same window and you're done! **NOTE** this completely bypassed avasts pin feature.. go figure..
