There was one extra log file that OTL gave me, it's in the attached for this post.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I see you have run combofix could you attach the log please it will be at C:\combofix.txt

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

Code: [Select]
:Files
C:\Windows\Installer\{0c6602c7-a9d4-5af0-82a9-e624cc1fc143}

:Commands
[resethosts]
[emptytemp]
[CREATERESTOREPOINT]
[Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Hey,

Yeah very unfortunately, i went ahead with the combofix because combofix suddenly didn't recognise avast as active. And this was before mchain replied and told me not to. :S

But anyways, here's the log. after the fix and another quick scan.

Might be a good idea to attach that combofix log too.  essexboy can then look it over to ensure nothing is amiss with that log.

I will need to check the combofix log, as there is no sign of services being infected

I guess that's good news! But i'm pretty sure combofix did the trick? Cuz before this i couldn't open firewall, windows security centre and when i scanned services.exe with avast it registered a threat. After combofix, things started to be okay already.

I'm deeply sorry to have wasted your time though...

None at all. I think combofix did the trick. I'm assuming combofix is this really powerful tool but really dangerous too because its unpredictable?

But yeah, i think we can close this thread, sorry to waste your time!

As I say it is better to be safe than sorry, you did not waste my time  :D

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Remove ComboFix
  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall
(Notice the space between the "x" and "/")
    then click OK

  • Follow the prompts on the screen
  • A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled
Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Your Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

 Upgrading Java:
  • Go to this site  and click Do I have Java

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

If you use on-line banking then as an added layer of protection install Trusteer Rapport

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide  How did I get infected in the first place ?Keep safe

Thank you so much essexboy. All done and done. Except for the removal of combofix though... I ignorantly just moved combofix and it's logs to the bin before your advice to go through the Run box. Would that be a problem?

Same thing went with OTL. :S

Edit: And also, I ran "Do i have Java" and it said "You have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 37)."

2nd Edit: Ran Hippo file update and yeah, there were a bunch of java/adobe updates to be run.

If you have deleted the main combofix .. OTL files then do the following

  • Download OTC to your desktop and run it
  • Click Yes to beginning the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. Choose Yes.
