Incredibar ... Thoughts?
« on: January 04, 2013, 02:25:40 AM »
I hadn't used the computer over at my sister's house in a while.
Yesterday I was there and immediately noticed several new software Apps installed in their computer.
I right off the bat didn't like seeing about 3 Toolbars in there.

I ran an avast Full Scan.  avast detected 5 cases of I believe ... Incredibar.  I can't remember if they were Files or Registry Entries or what.
For severity it labeled them as Low.  And it did classify them as PUPs.

I had those detections moved to the chest.

I later ran a SAS Scan.  It didn't find anything.

IS Incredibar BAD?  Should I insist to them that it be removed?

I don't even know if they knowingly installed those various Toolbars.  I'm guessing they're not aware that those Toolbars were installed ... no doubt as bundled Apps from those other various software Apps that they installed ... like IMVU.

I noticed that sucker ... IMVU is loading automatically at Bootup.

Should I basically strongly recommend that ALL Toolbars in there be removed?

This is what WOT says about Incredibar.

I, particularly, do not like any toolbar.

Agreed. All toolbars do is slow down your browser.

Thanks, iroc ... Pondus ... Marc!
I'll see about removing those Toolbars the next time I'm over there.
It might not be until maybe Sunday though before I get a chance to be around that area.

Hi Chim,

As Marc57 says, take it along on a usb stick. I always carry such a stick with me with some adware cleansing and other resources should  I have to resuscitate a computer. Your sister will be grateful for this...

So am I understanding correctly?  AdwCleaner is Portable as is?  So if I download it from here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

... it'll be the latest version AND Portable.  I can add this version to my PortableApps.com Platform on my Flash Drive?

Okay, another thing.  From doing some reading, apparently this AdwCleaner is pretty much a - Delete ALL - ONLY App.

How safe is that?
From reading here:

http://www.raymond.cc/blog/adwcleaner-search-and-delete-adware-pup-toolbar-and-homepage-hijacker/

... they do appear to make its - Delete ALL - ONLY style sound safe.  Do y'all agree?

Yep as it only targets toolbars..  So if it takes off the one toolbar that you really, really must have then just re-install

Thanks, Essexboy!
Any reason why there's then a Delete Button AND an Uninstall Button?
Do they both  pretty much achieve the same removal results?

Doh!  Okay, I guess there's that.

The trouble with that is that very easily, someone, like me in this case ... could mistake that to mean that is what's clicked on to remove what AdwCleaner found.

Anwyay, I got it now.  Thanks again, Essexboy!

Well, BAD probably isn't the best word to describe Incredibar products but like most toolbars and smiley things they are unnecessary and may even cause slow downs or unexpected crashes. So, I would say it's annoying not bad. Besides, it's not a threat so most antivirus products won't flag it as potentially malicious, AdwCleaner or Superantispyware may detect and remove it tho. Even if they will remove incredibar or at least some of its components you will have to restore browser settings yourself. Here's how to do that:

This guide will walk you through the steps that you can use to remove this program and disable it in your installed web browsers. Cheers!

Now why would you go through all of those steps when ADW does all of that for you. ???
ADW is also not likely to make a mistake or forget an entry.   ;D
