avast! 8 Public beta
« on: February 01, 2013, 12:32:49 PM »
Hi all!

It's finally here! avast! 8 public beta is now ready! The build number is 8.0.1476. A few things to point out:

You'll immediately notice the new GUI.  We are excited to hear your feedback
The Software Updater is a new tool for helping you keep apps up to date.  Give it a try :-)
There is a new product tier called Premier, it includes 3 new features:
•         Data Shredder for wiping files, drives, and partitions
•         Software Updater in autoupdate mode
•         AccessAnywhere for remotely connecting to your PC no matter where you are

There is also a Browser Cleanup tool; it's a standalone utility for getting rid of invasive toolbars. This utility is also
integrated in all avast! editions just to make things simpler.

Other improvements have been made to our FileRep and WebRep to help keep identify new threats in near real-time.
And finally, our Streaming Updates make sure you have the lastes virus definitions.

We hope you will find avast! 8 to be a great product and we sincerely appreciate you taking part in the beta and sharing your feedback with us.
Please use our new https://feedback.avast.com (click 'Login', then 'Single Sign-On' and you'll be logged in automagically if you are already logged in the forum or you'll be asked for your forum credentials).

Known issues in this version
- Win8 is unsupported by this build (but Win8 compatibility is coming soon, of course)
- Except English, there are many translation issues
- Automatic Profile detection in the firewall is broken – does not work on Win7
- No information popup on controlled PC when client is connected via avast! AccessAnywhere
- List of computers shows offline PCs and also those that don’t have AccessAnywhere activated
- Self defence dialog appears when reinstalling over older builds
- After facebook registration setup might crash so reboot is required to start avast! service
- During softrial gui is not correctly updated
- Data shredder cannot shred files and partitions (GUI bug)
- There might be stability issues with Outlook plugins
- UI might hang sometimes during connecting to avast! account
- Some online content does not fit or is not translated yet

It should be possible to install this version on top of your existing avast! installation (all settings should be preserved).

Thanks!

-The AVAST team

Downloaded and installed AIS over the closed beta on XP and 7 no problems apparent
Would not install on 8 even though I have the closed beta on that, a bit miffed as it worked well for me on 8

Licence and settings transferred

No option to remove the Market or Share tabs
Feedback page comes up but does not automatically log me in
The status page looks a bit scruffy  ;D
Selecting the scan tile automatically start a quick scan.. I would rather it left the option of which scan to run to me
Still not overly happy with the smiley, it looks a bit amateur
I am slowly getting used to the tile settings but I am a dinosaur

That's exactly what the new "default scan" concept does. You can designate any of the scan jobs as "default" and it will be then associated with that button.

Sort of like the default printer.

Thanks

is right to assume that that the premier version is a standalone version like the pro and ais version?

A look at the scans showed a weird one which was just question marks..  Then I found the custom scan and gave it a name

Does this update fix the script shield issue with Chrome? And has the updates for the script shield moved to the VPS since the browsers update frequently?

To be honest i'd prefer a simple selection between Quick and Full scan when you click that button, like i suggested during closed beta...

Downloading Now to Test on XP Laptop,  New Interface Looks Great so far based on the screenshots...

Doesn't run so well it appears so far on this older laptop--very slow boot up into Windows XP Home

Laptop memory is 1.5gb of ram
Processor Intel Celeron M, 1.6ghz Single Core

Is the new Avast 8 optimized for Quad Core Processors in this version when it's compatible with Windows 8?  Main Desktop is Windows 8 Pro 64bit Desktop with Quad Core Processor, so just wondering when it's ready for Windows 8 if the Performance will be better than Windows Defender in terms of scan speed, and such
