« on: February 06, 2013, 08:59:48 PM »
My avast stopped working.. I am getting an unsecured.. fix now click on that nothing happens.
There is a down arrow stating The avast antivirus progran has been stopped or is in an inconsistent state please  restart.. I click on "Start Program" nothing happens.. still have the red X on avast. I uninstalled Avast.. and re-downloaded  new exe file... last night.. worked ok... I started my machine and it is back... I ran Malewarebytes yesterday and have no virus.. what is wrong how can I fix this.. help please
I also went to control panel... tried repair.. rebooted... did not help.... so I uninstalled from control panel.. and ran ccleaner.. and re-downloaded...  working now... but I bet when I close down and restart it it happens again.. too bad cause I really like avast!

Interesting, I have exactly the same problem.  If I go to the maintenance tab, the engine/virus definition version is unknown, and the program current version is 7.0.1474.  Updating either the engine/virus definitions or the program manually fails with a message, "Failed to update.  The avast! service is not running."

A lot of topics on this

I suggest to download the latest full update package from here and apply it. The "Fix" button should work then.

A clean install requires that you also run the avast! uninstall utility NOT Ccleaner after you've uninstalled it from Add/Remove (Programs and Features). You'll find the utility at:

Last night, I downloaded the latest version of Avast, removed the Internet connection, uninstalled Avast, installed the newer version, rebooted, scanned the hard drive (75 minutes for 60 GB of files on a 300 GB drive), reconnected to the Internet and went about my business. Everything works fine today! A side note to the experience is that I tried to do a quick scan after I got the Unsecured message, and then got the message "There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper.")

I had same problem in January, tried numerous uninstall / reinstall, all failed.  At one point Avast had the Windows XP Registry inaccessible and I was getting numerous errors trying to open any software, run CMD, explorer, everything.  I was finally able to (after several reboots) open a web browser, I used the link to the Avast web site uninstall it finally removed the product.  Rebooted and all the registry related errors went away.  Reinstalled Avast and was protected again.  This lasted two weeks.  I rebooted last night and after the reboot the Avast icon had the red X in it stating I was unprotected again.  Another hour this morning of repairing (unsuccessful), uninstalling, reinstalling (unsuccessful), another un - re, rebooting, still red X but clicked Start services and after two minutes Avast woke up and now says protected.

What other security software do you have now or ever had?  Firewall?  Anti-Spyware?
If uninstalled how was it uninstalled?
