Virus Alerts (email notifications) feature not working
« on: February 21, 2013, 07:28:06 PM »
My goal: Test the email notification feature "Virus Alerts" on my personal computer using my own email accounts.

Problem: Testing this feature (via test button) does not produce an email notification. I won't test with a sample file until the built-in test feature confirms that the notification system is operational.

product: Avast! Free Antivirus
version: 7.0.1474

Setting summary: I want Avast! to send an email notification FROM my personal Gmail account and have it sent TO my domain's email account.
(i.e. FROM: me@gmail.com TO: me@mydomain.com)

Outgoing server settings
server: smtp.gmail.com
port: 465 (or 587, both suggested by Google)
from address: my Gmail address
requires authentication: yes
username: my Gmail address
password: my Gmail password

I've already tried: ports 25, 456, and 587. Re-entering my Gmail username & password to ensure they're correct.

Please post any advice/suggestions that you may have.
Thanks in advance!

See this thread http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=115640.msg899036

The email notification feature was removed in earlier versions of avast 7 but there is the ability to get it back with a small modification of the ini file

Thank you for such a prompt response. I'm indeed trying to have virus detection alerts sent to my domain's email account.
If you happen to know the location of the thread where "one claimed to have it working" I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm having a hard time understanding why this feature is offered in the product if it doesn't actually work.
Can anyone help me with this or is Avast! dropping the ball big time?

Was able to get alerts to work on my XP pc for gmail.
Would not work without entering the info in the SMTP authentication section.
Here are my settings.

Server address: smtp.gmail.com
Port: 465
Security: SSL/TLS
From Address: my gmail address
If the SMTP server requries authentication: checked
User name: my gmail address
Password: my gmail password
