WebShield- scan IE, but not Firefox?
« on: March 10, 2005, 04:28:40 AM »
I was just wondering if there was any way to set WebShield to scan IE, but not Firefox... the browser of my choice, Firefox, is pretty secure as it is.  I really only need WebShield because a few other people use this computer and they use IE... pretty much amateur users, so I'd like to have something protecting IE.

Is this possible?

Set up Internet Explorer to use a proxy of 127.0.0.1, port 12080, and set up 12080 as the redirected http port in Webshield.  IE should go through Webshield, Firefox on port 80 should go straight through.

Alright, thanks. Is there anyway to validate that browsers WebShield is scanning?

And will something besides 12080 work?

Easiest way to validate what is being scanned is to load a web page from your browser and see if it it shows up on Webshield as last scanned.  And just pick another proxy port if you don't like 12080, as long as you tell Webshield about it.  This assumes you are using XP so you don't need to go into avast.ini.

Click here to test the webshield

It should bring up a window asking to abort the connection.

Please note: This is NOT a real virus, it is the EICAR test virus. Avast will report it as "EICAR Test-NOT virus!!"
