Cannot Auto Update
« on: April 05, 2013, 05:36:05 PM »
New topic continued from http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=116287.345;topicseen

It is possibly worth running their specific uninstall utilities:
- Uninstall possible remnants of previously installed AVs see, http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/, this has a collection of manufactures removal tools, so that should remove any remnants, registry, etc. So you should find one there for avira and avg.

Note: So as not to get lost in this massive unrelated topic, it would be best to continue this in your own new topic.

I ran both AVG and Avira with no change. Cannot Connect To Server Error.

OK, presumable these reported that they were clear.

What errors/problems were you getting that you tried avg (possibly related to internet connections) ?

What happens when you do a manual update of the virus definitions from the avastUI, Maintenance, Update are there any other errors other than the Cannot Connect To Server Error ?

I just wonder if when installing avast there may have been remnants of a previous AV that it didn't install correctly, so you may want to consider a clean reinstall of avast not you have confirmed any possible remnants have gone.
- Download the latest version of avast, 8.0.1483 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for all versions).
  • 1. Now uninstall avast! - using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step, reboot.
  • 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, it will request it be run from safe mode (and will handle the boot into safe mode), first for 7.x if previously installed and then for 8.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  • 3. install the latest version, reboot.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

WIndows would not restart, then I went to safe mode and uninstalled AVG

No other errors. After fail it reports the Web/ IP address it went to.

I did all of the above and when I restarted from safe to normal mode, in short the PC was messed up. Window programs that normally start did not, services did not start, my user preferences were gone.  But I continued on and installed Avast and it would not start manually or automatically. I recovered with system restore and tried to use aswclear.exe , but it will not run in a normal windows, has to be in safe mode, even if I try over ride it . I installed Avast again and I am back to less than square one because now it cannot install the updates I download and returns an error message. Other than trying another AV program, I don't know what to do at this point.

Well I uninstalled Avast and then ran the AVG and Avira removal tools and then ran aswclear successfully from a normal Windows environment. Installed Avast and the following error appeared at the end of the installation....

 Error loading  c\program files\Avast software\avast\ashmaisv.dll operating system cannot run%1
Checked and c\program files\Avast software\avast\ashmaisv.dll  does exist.
I am now back to square one and I am able to manually update the definitions from http://www.avast.com/download-update but still cannot connect to server errors.

Ashampoo Firewall ( tried with it off)

That's the problem..!!
Uninstall Ashampoo FW and try again.

It works! Thank You! Uninstalled Ashampoo and I clicked update definitions and update program and it worked. Installed Private Firewall 7.0 and it still works. The auto update should work now since I am not getting "cannot connect to server" error. ;D
