Because their AV isn't preforming to good as well  ;) :P
Oh, this we already know and tested...  ;D
What about the new firewall?

avg firewall is a big joke - you'd have to be a fool to trust it !!

Hi,
apparently what we have to test is still a beta (or alpha), so we might expect some changes in future. Anyway from what we've seen with pk it seems to be entirely based on user mode filtering in LSP level. This means that Grisoft's DLL is loading itself into every process accessing the net and here it monitors Winsock function calls.

This might sufficiently stop outgoing connection attempts from regular Winsock apps but might provide only very limited low-level firewalling work. It does not protects the tcp stack and cannot stealth ports. Custom (patched) winsock.dll might be also used to prevent the LSP from loading. Also note that TCPIP can be called directly bypassing the winsock and the firewall, so this further limits it's usability. I am not sure (and uninstalled AVGFW already) but I also doubt it can block ICMP traffic.

I must admit however that with the conjunction of Win XP firewall it might provide the outgoing apps control which is missing in the XP2 FW.

Anyway, you can try it on you own and make your own judgments. I can hardly feel as an independent tester and I think we can wait for the final version.

Listen to pk, our firewall guru  ;D 8)

No, I won't... Thanks... A lot of problems to workaround...
I've tested the antivirus and won't lose more time.
I've done my judgments by the way they behave with the free AVG version.

Me, less then...
We have license from Vlk to be avast fanatics  ;D (haven't we, Vkl?)
I'm much less independent than you  8)

I recently started using AVG free AV. I'm not changing any features of Avast!, they're happily working away in the background . I disabled the resident shield, e-mail scanner, and scheduler in AVG free ED.  I only want an alternate ; on demand scanner. AVG has stopped screaming , and I manually update.
This is my first experience with AVG. The Disaster boot disks, are a good idea,  no disaster crashes as yet so not sure how effective they are ?
Anyhow sorry I've wandered of topic. ;D
I've tried heaps of combinations, of AV software; and would be at this time very wary of changing to a 'Suite' of Apps. from any single company.
The old combo of Avast! ; ZA, (even though it doesn't recognise any type of AV programs ); Spybot S&D; Ad-Aware SE, Spywareguard,Spywareblaster,Winpatrol, and HJT, do the job. They are the programs I started out with; and after trying other products I've happily returned to this configuration .

I use to have AVG for almost four month.  It was a good AV but it couldn't delete a infected file, I can't even send the file in the quarritine chest.  So I got rid of it.
