email problems

I have been using avast home for a few months now and cant believe it is free!
Unfortunately I now seem to have a small problem, I have to disable the AV to get my email, which sort of defeats the object. I am using freeserve for email and outlook express 6. I changed the settings to put the message at the end of my emails, but may have done something I shouldnt. I get messages like these;

The server responded with an error. Account: 'pop.freeserve.com', Server: 'pop.freeserve.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR  Cannot connect to POP server 193.252.22.136 (193.252.22.136:110), connect error 10061', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90

The host 'pop.freeserve.com' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'pop.freeserve.com', Server: 'pop.freeserve.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11004, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'pop.freeserve.com', Server: 'smtp.freeserve.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '421  Cannot connect to SMTP server 195.92.195.153 (195.92.195.153:25), connect error 10061', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC67

Do these mean anything to anyone? I unclicked the boxes I ticked for the avast messages but still have to download email unprotected. I dont understand what to try next apart from a go back with XP or uninstalling and reinstalling Avast.

Are you using a firewall?

If so which one and have you allowed the ashMaiSv.exe access to the internet?

Actually from reading the error messages, it is likely that your email client is no longer configured with Avast.  Somehow the username has been changed and is no longer recognized.

The username that is normally used with Avast is something like this:
"username"#pop.freeserver.com for both Smtp on Port 25 and POP on Port 110.

If the settings are correct, then go into Control Panel, Add/Remove and click on Avast.
You will see Options....Choose Repair. 

Let me know if this corrects the problem.

Techie, Simon is using XP so the account settings in his email client shouldn't be changed they should be transparent.

Your analysis would be correct if he were using Win98 say.

I use another free bit of software for firewall, zone alarm. I can remember the box coming up asking for premission for the ashmaisv.exe which I'm sure I allowed. I tried closing the firewall down and tried my email again, no problems even with avast running, so it looks like zone alarm needs a dose of looking at, thanks for the useful info! Feels better downloading email with the av running but the firewall not.

Whilst I don't use ZA, have a look in the program/applications area and see if you can see an entry for ashMaiSv.exe (avast! Mail Server) and check what the options are and change if required.

This was the problem, the ashmaisv.exe file was X'd in the allow/disallow section of Zone alarm somehow, anyway it is now ticked and my email is back to normal, thanks for your advice.
