Both Microsoft Windows 8.1 and Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 are now available as a Public Beta on both Microsoft's MSDN and Microsoft Technet Websites (you don't even have to be a Subscriber to Download it), the downloads are good until January 15th, 2014!
Does anybody know if we will be able to upgrade from beta to final version or we will need a clean install of 8.1?

NO
Which is why it should not be installed on your working Windows 8 system.

Me too but not till I get back home. Certainly can't take a chance on the laptop that I need for presentations. :)

Turns out you were wrong BOB, Steven L. Rose from Microsoft said that you will be able to Upgrade from Windows 8.1 Preview to Windows 8.1 Final, BUT it must be done as an In Place Upgrade, NOT a normal Upgrade, meaning you have to get your hands on the Windows 8.1 Final .ISO in order to do it, something Retail Customer's won't have access to it unless they purchase a new copy of Windows 8.1 from the Microsoft Online Store.

Maybe you should read what you post or quote:

Therefore, my answer of NO is correct for all but a very few. Certainly a caution the average computer user needs to be aware of.

Is anybody using Windows 8.1 and the latest avast! beta together?
If so, I'll go for Windows 8.1. Otherwise, I'll wait for this compatibility.
Thanks for any support.

If you are referring to 8.0.1492, it still does NOT work with Win 8.1 X64 for sure.

I would also caution you BOB on trying to use Avast 8.0.1492 with Windows 8.1. I am still having Compatibility Issues!

I'm currently using 8.0.1492 on Windows 8 Pro without any problems outside of no sounds. If you read any of my other posts regarding Windows 8.1,
you would already know that I'm currently on the road doing Avast sponsored Security Presentations and, haven't installed Windows 8.1 :)

Well.. one thing for sure BOB... Windows 8.1 on MAC bootcamp + Avast 8.0.1492 surely doesn't work. It pass the installment however after the first restart problem will arise when you want to perform shutdown. All error break lose and upon reboot Windows 8.1 will not appear any more after login (crash)

The error is actually a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death), and while were on the topic about Avast Build 8.0.1492, if you delay Rebooting after installing it on X64 Windows 8.1 Build 9431 Public Beta, Run32.dll will eventually start crashing, so the problems do begin even before you Reboot for the first time.

Avast Internet Security 8.0.1492 does not work. Windows 8.1 Preview pops up many processes' cancellations and if you 'OK' them, then the system crashes. I could not install any software, as Windows 8.1 wipes out all softwares, except personal data. I installed and uninstalled Avast and also reinstalled Windows 8.1 Preview without any antivirus. Now the OS is seemingly stable. The question is-Is Windows Defender good enough? The communication from the support team is that everything will be alright before the official release of Windows 8.1, which is October 26, 2013. My family has many licences.

Please remember that no company guarantees compatibility with any beta software that includes your OS.
Windows 8.1 is a pre-release and therefore is actually still beta. You install it at your own risk and, you can't
update from the pre-release of Windows 8.1 to the final release without having to re-install all of your programs.

What about the new beta 8.0.1496 - anyone got a changelog - still just fixes for 8.1?
