How do I get AVAST to scan EMAILS?
« on: May 24, 2005, 04:45:56 AM »
Giving history, so no doubts....

I use both AVAST and AVG(both worked GREAT together),

YES
I know recommendations not using 2 anti viruses,
But both have worked well together for months!

Had to uninstall AVAST for a while, but, reinstalled it.

Here is my question.

For some reason now, AVAST is not scanning emails, before, both Avast and avg did(both showed scan results  on bottom of email)

Any guesses why AVAST doesn't show on emails?

This is not an avast! problem. I've posted three or four times here.
Last AVG update change the behavior of the email scanner that, right now, is not compatible with avast! email scanning.
It was until last week but AVG changed something...  :P

So I guess that statement doesn't hold true any more or rather 'worked' being the operative word.

Two resident scanners working together is more luck than design, it only needs a small change in one of them for them to collide and cause conflict. This is why we err on the side of safety and don't recommend more than one resident scanner.

Thanks guys.

For right now I only have AVG scanning the email.

Chose avg only cause more familier with it.

Any opinions if I should keep it that way or turn off AVG's email scanner and turn on Avast's instead?

That entirely depends on how AVG scans your email, if it waits until your email is in the inbox to scan for viruses, you are already playing catch up. avast uses a localhost cache to scan your email Before it gets to the inbox.

If a virus is detected by avast you can delete the email and it has never got to your inbox, this stops email from launching any auto execution script, which could happen if the scan happened after it got to your inbox.

So I would say get familiar with avast and only use AVG for On-Demand scan if you want a second opinion. Don't use any of the AVG resident features.

I've used NAV, then AVG but when I meet avast... well, love in first glance  :)
For me, the configurable features are a must have... Avast could be what I want... AVG is a closed box: pick it or leave it...
Updates (incremental, automatic, a lot of servers) was the last thing to change from AVG to avast  :)

All this shows is that you have 2 posts in which you've received advice NOT to run 2 Resident AV's at the same time.
