explorer.exe Win64:Dropper-gen HELP
« on: March 08, 2014, 04:57:43 AM »
So I click on a file and I get a avast popup that says I have that thing in the title, I tried running a scan and it says it found the virus but it gives me an error when I try and delete it. Please Help!! Also I am fairly computer savvy I  don't need instruction dumbed down too much.

While I may not be a regular to these forums, I am fairly sure it is a false positive. Upload your explorer.exe to virustotal.com if you get the exact same results as
https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/868efdba6e8e51bbdc99a45bbdfd2fccfa16b5e4851d86e905cf3cd0e89b602d/analysis/1394221096/ or https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/c1a580448bc33d89399370c506661a46416ed983a3e5a5433affb1db5e28940f/analysis/1394214390/

The problem occured for me because I had a patched version of explorer.exe. See here. If you had knowingly modified explorer.exe (with a program such as W7SBC) and trust that program, then you may do as I did and whitelist explorer.exe in Avast for now.

Of course, there is still the chance that explorer.exe is malware. So do it at your own risk.

I have also alerted Avast of the file (although the last time I did this they took >3 months to reply...)
