Problem with WinPatrol 9.7 UpDate
« on: August 15, 2005, 08:28:34 AM »
Winpatrol final 9.7 now available as you probably all know  ;D
Each time I open WinPatrol 9.7 Free
TaskSheduler [C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSTASK.EXE] is starting ???
Anyone else having this problem ? I'm experiencing it on Win98SE . I can't see why TaskScheduler is running with WinPatrol .

New Startup Programs
Don't be surprised when you see new titles listed as Startup Programs!
WinPatrol has expanded the number of locations monitored as auto-run setup programs. The Spyware and Adware villains have found some of those undocumented locations in Windows and Scotty will now check them as well. WinPatrol will reset them back to the default Windows settings.
For the techies out there new locations included are:

# HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Shell= Explorer.exe

# HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Userinit.exe
In My StartUp List the Registry string is a little different .
Startup Location:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Userinit.
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Shell
Info given to these additions to startup monitoring  :
Status : LOCAL FILE NOT FOUND.

THE TASKSHEDULER.EXE OPENING MAY BE RELATED TO SOMETHING ELSE, IT NEVER USED TO RUN WHEN OPENING WP  ::)  IT JUST OCCURED AFTER INSTALLING WP 9.7.
 I'VE RE-INSTALLED.
Same situation  :P
TaskSheduler isn't listed RUN at StartUp.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

Abraxas,

I am running WinPatrol Plus 9.7 with WinXP SP2. Haven't had any problems with it. Sorry I can't be of any help to you. Just letting you know that in my situation the latest Plus version with my OS is working fine.

Abraxas,
There are several problems with winpatrol 9.7 that the author is aware of. He is feverishly working to correct them . Not all machines are affected.  I have a machine with win98se and I can't get 9.7 to work at all. My xp machine works fine.

Thanks ; neal63 for the feedback that you're not having any problems, I haven't tested the new release on my WinXP SP2 yet; just Win98SE
&  P3t3rb0nn thanks for steering me to CastleCops , I'm reading BillPStudios post as we speak  ;) Great Find ! Thanks !
The TaskScheduler is handy for things like ScanDisk & defrag, on '98SE , but I've got bad memories of the windows update program trying to connect via SheduledTasks each 5 minutes in the past. (till I figured how to Kill It.)
Don't like it when tasks keep annoying me unnecessarily .
Much appreciated for your responses guy's.

O.K. thanks jwa You posted just as I was about to. There's something fishy going on. So you can't get it running at all with win98se. Thanks for that . :) Best to wait on a fix for '98SE i suppose.
Have a look  @ CastleCopsWinPatrol Talk

I am running win98se and I have a problem with Task Scheduler after upgrading to WP 9.7 , it keeps reloading in the task bar when windows starts even after checking the menu option : Advanced >> Stop using Task Scheduler.
I can't figure out a way to stop it.  ::)

minacross You are not the only one  >:(
This is a problem that a few of us are experiencing, even with winXP SP2. If you have an older .EXE file from a previous version instal that. Uninstal v.9.7 through Windows ADD/REMOVE programs> REBOOT >then instal an earlier version which worked for you. I've no problems now after doing this . I was able to track down WinPatrol 9.5 at Download.com.

WinPatrolTalk
@ Castle cops has some threads concerning this issue .
You can read comments from other user's , and  the developers there. It seems a small % of users have this problem, and they are working hard to resolve it.
HERE AND
Good grief (9.7.0.9)!

I may be wrong but I've found that Spybot S&D can do some/same job as WinPatrol does (if not all).

As far as I know, these are what Spybot S&D can do via its resident protection without rely on signatures

- real-time detecting changes in startup registry
- real-time detecting changes in IE (BHO)
- protect changes in IE start page
- locking hosts file
- removing unwanted ActiveX and BHO
- Kill unwanted processes
- removing unwanted items in system startup
