Manual setup of Opera email
« on: April 28, 2006, 01:19:50 PM »
Hello all -
Having some trouble setting up Opera 9b Build 8372 mail. I have edited Avast's (4.7.817) .ini and the Opera account settings as indicated in help. No luck. The icon doesn't even appear to indicate that the mail scanner is working. Yes, it is enabled.

Here are the particulars of my system.

Local Gateway Server IP:192.168.1.1
Local IP: 192.168.1.21
Username: xxxx@sapo.pt
POP server: pop.sapo.pt
SMTP: smtp.sapo.pt

Current .ini settings:
[MailScanner]
SmtpListen=192.168.1.1:25
PopListen=192.168.1.1:110
ImapListen=192.168.1.1:143
NntpListen=192.168.1.1:119
UseDefaultSmtp=0
DefaultPopServer=pop.sapo.pt
DefaultSmtpServer=smtp.sapo.pt
ShowTrayIcon=1
AutoSetProtection=0
PopRedirectPort=110
SmtpRedirectPort=25
ImapRedirectPort=143
NntpRedirectPort=119
IgnoreAddress=
IgnoreLocalhost=1
AutoRedirect=1

(I also tried the 127.0.0.1 address for listening, and in Opera's account settings.)

Something is not doing what it should, I just don't know if it is me or the software.

Thanks for any help.

CharlyO,
I don't see anything in that search that pertains to Avast. Opera's config is fairly simple for mail. But with Avast's mail scanner, it gets a bit trickier.

One thing I noticed is that the Help for manual config says that there is no need to restart the software or computer once the ini is changed. But it is only on reboot that Avast seemed to notice changes and let me know that there is a problem with monitoring mail (for another computer). So, I think I need to go through the variations again and reboot between changes.

What is your OS ?

Whilst I don't use Opera or its email I would have thought that if you were using XP you wouldn't have to manually set-up opera email ?

This is network addresses "192.168.1.1" so I'm not sure if they are required or if this isn't the problem. What or who created the entries in avast4.ini for the listening ports ?

I use OE and obviously I don't have any listening port in my [MailScanner] section, just the redirect ports you also show.

Hi,
I use Opera for mail no problem with the latest version of Avast.
If you upgrade your Avast to 4.7.826 your ini file should look like this
[MailScanner]
PopRedirectPort=110,995
SmtpRedirectPort=25,587
ImapRedirectPort=143
NntpRedirectPort=119
IgnoreAddress=
IgnoreLocalhost=1
AutoRedirect=1
StartPop=1
StartSmtp=1
StartImap=1
StartNntp=1
ShowTrayIcon=1
In your Opera mail settings in account properties under servers, make sure you enter in incoming pop service, pop3sato.pt.
It's important to have the 3 after the pop. You log in to your pop3  mail server to receive or send mail.

Thank you Wulf, I thought it a little strange that ratbastardly had a network address in the listening ports.

Hopefully your settings will fork for ratbastardly too.

@wulf:
In my experience, very few providers have ever used a "3" in their mail configs. No result here. Upgrading to 4.7.826 has not modified the ini. I will go through the permutations again, but I have to ask, how did you configure Opera? Manually or with the wizard, or with a new install of Avast?

@DavidR:
This was the last setting. As I wrote, I also used the 127.0.0.1 setting, with no reaction from the mail scanner. Something is not happening that normally should be. I use 98SE with modifications. I was trying to parse the "Help"for Avast that instructed to use the IP for the local host. Thus I tried 127... and the actual IP for the box.

Hi ratbarstardly,
I found with my internet provider if I didn't add the 3 after the pop, I couldn't log in. It may be different with yours as you say.
I configured Opera with the wizard and changed nothing in Avast.
The only thing I see is your Avast ini is diffrent to mine.
Yours
[MailScanner]
SmtpListen=192.168.1.1:25
PopListen=192.168.1.1:110
ImapListen=192.168.1.1:143
NntpListen=192.168.1.1:119
UseDefaultSmtp=0
DefaultPopServer=pop.sapo.pt
DefaultSmtpServer=smtp.sapo.pt
ShowTrayIcon=1
AutoSetProtection=0
PopRedirectPort=110
SmtpRedirectPort=25
ImapRedirectPort=143
NntpRedirectPort=119
IgnoreAddress=
IgnoreLocalhost=1
AutoRedirect=1

Mine
[MailScanner]
PopRedirectPort=110,995
SmtpRedirectPort=25,587
ImapRedirectPort=143
NntpRedirectPort=119
IgnoreAddress=
IgnoreLocalhost=1
AutoRedirect=1
StartPop=1
StartSmtp=1
StartImap=1
StartNntp=1
ShowTrayIcon=1

Perhaps some one else on the forum who is more in the know about  the avast ini file could explain why this is so.  My Opera mail is definitely working fine, and being scanned by the Internet Mail provider, both inward and outward.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help. My Operating system is Win 2000 Pro SP4.

Change this
AutoSetProtection=0 to
AutoSetProtection=1
This should tell it to start protecting a new created account.
Set also
SmtpListen=127.0.0.1:25
PopListen=127.0.0.1:110
ImapListen=127.0.0.1:143
NntpListen=127.0.0.1=119

If you are using win 98, in Opera mail settings, in servers put
127.0.0.1.
 If you are using Win 2000 or XP put
pop.sato.pt.
Hope this helps.

ratbastardly,

The pop.sapo.pt isn't a POP3S connection?
