It shouldn't be necessary to uninstall avast! - just run the installer and it will offer you to update the existing installation.

May I ask: why are there still bugs occurring after a beta phase? I'm loathe to update to the latest, latest, latest version yet, .938 is it now? I'll stick with the stable .892 for a while, thanks

I have to say - I'm running 938 and I've yet to find anything that I would call a bug. It's running perfectly and updating with no problem. XP Pro SP2.

We've released another beta (4.7.941), that should work on Vista x64. Just run the beta updater as per instructions in Vlk's first post, you can download the updater here: http://files.avast.com/files/beta/aswbeta.exeFixed release version will be uploaded soon.

I suspect that your helpful information may be lost ... it seems that some users can be relied on to always make the same comments at every update. More power to you for trying though.

We've released another beta (4.7.941), that should work on Vista x64. Fixed release version will be uploaded soon. Is there any change that could be tested in a non-x64 system? If it isn`t, well there will be no reason to take the beta test for a lot of us... I`d like to know.

I have tried to upgrade from the .936 to the .938 program. I continued to have the same problems as previously reported (errors starting all programs, ie: task manager, control panel etc).
I have attempted to install the .941 beta. The installation appears to complete, but About Avast still shows .938. Perhaps I am doing something wrong.
I will attempt to uninstall Avast, and install the .941 beta installer tool and report my results
I'm more than happy to help debug this, so if the developers need need additional info (screen shots, etc) please feel free to respond back-channel.

The beta installer is just a tiny tool that turns the "official" release into beta. So, you'll have to have an "official" release installed first, and then use the beta tool to update it (you can't install the beta from scratch this way).
Regarding the build number of About box - did you reboot after the update was installed?

Beta version was cancelled now. Release update is now uploading to servers, so please wait to update release version to 4.7.942.

Igor -
I uninstalled my original installation, then reinstalled .938. Now, avast won't start. Everything else seems to work.
When I double-click the status icon, I get "The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error".
Services.msc shows avast! Antivirus set to start automatically, but is not started. When I attempt to start, I get a dialog that states "Windows could not start the avast! Antivirus servie on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start"
I'll try to update to .941 and report results.

I tried to install the update. Still cannot get avast to start properly. The about box still shows .938.
I'll wait for the servers to update, and try to upgrade through the program icon.

bingo, bango, boingo we're as happy as can be!! I pulled down the .942 update, and all is well with avast on x64! Task Manager works, control panel fires up, an avast starts normally. Great service! thanks for all the help!
